    Ok sometimes I get cannot perform end disc at once and I have no idea what that means. Also, is it better to enable multisesson or not? Also, is it better to enable multisesson or not? And does illegal disk mean you do not have enough space?

    Anyway heres the log.

    @Liqisaber -

    - the easiest way to explain this, is if you don't know what it is you probably don't need it. for more info see here - http://www.roxio.com/en/support/cdr/multisession.html

    - no. and in your case it looks like a combination of loads of things needing tweaking/updating. It could also be down to fake discs.....

    - too old, latest is 6.6.0.16. update Nero

    - firmware is 3 versions behind, A105 is here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1973

    - DMA needs to be ON. Fix it via this - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm

    - 2 problems here (this is the disc you're copying from). Firstly, the first line has some stupidly large made up figure as it either can't work out the size of the disc due to Nero being too old, or due to crap media (or both). Secondly, the second line shows the original disc (disc you're copying from) was burnt too close to outer edge of the disc. If you use DVD Shrink, avoid this in future by setting target size in Shrink's preferences to 4300MB, thus avoiding outer edge of discs and not sacrificing much space.

    - i think this suggests crap media

    - again, you're burning too close to outer edge of discs. set target size in Shrink's preferences as stated above.

    - hmmmm, are these authentic Taiyo Yuden discs (TY) or FAKES ?. to establish if they're genuine, see here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/225272

    - you can't booktype -R discs, only +R discs (and only then if your burner supports booktyping, otherwise known as bitsetting)

    - follow my suggestions and verify whether the TY discs are authentic, and hopefully we'll get you burning again

    - most people recommend 4x

    - you have Roxio software installed (the first 2 CDR* lines in the paragraph). Roxio and Nero don't always play well together. You also have InCD installed, this is Nero's 'packet writing' software (it's explained in that link up top of my reply re multisession), if you don't use packet writing which it sounds like you don't, then get rid of it. Nero is in dire need of up andate anyway, uninstal Nero, uninstall completely via Nero Clean Tools - " http://www.nero.com/en/Clean_Tools.html ", then install 6.6.0.16, but DO NOT install Nero's InCD. Also, to fully remove Roxio, you may need to google search for Roxio Zapper..

    Hey thanks for helping creaky. The disc I was using was hyundai, ran out of memorex. But it looks like verbatim is one of the best media, talking about media I wasn't using YT.

    I can enable DMA mode when trying to burn it asks me. I was wondering if DMA mode could mess up your computers registry causing it not to boot up? Just got this thought because everytime I had DMA mode on (twice) I had to reformat my computer about 2 months after each time. But now it isn't enabled and my computer is fine and I haven't needed to reformat in a long time. Just a odd coincidence.

    And... I won't need packet writing if I just burn cds or use data disc?

    Also for the firmware this is the one I want correct?

    Thanks for the help guys.

    My issue turned out to be a bad cable... I think. I have an external burner using a Firewire to iLink cable to my laptop. The wire is brand new and came with the Sony burner. I am now using a USB cable that also came with the burner and have been burning fine.

    @Liqisaber -

    Avoid the Hyundai and Memorex, stick to the good stuff such as Verbatim [bold]datalifeplus[/bold]

    had got the firmware link slightly wrong, it's here and have corrected it in precious reply -
    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1973

    the easiest way to explain re packet writing is that if you don't know what it is, you definitely don't need it..

    Dunno what to say about your DMA at the moment... have you got the driver cd/disc that came with your motherboard/PC ?

    @Burn-it - cool, happy burning

    Hi.
    I'm a newbie in writing DVDs.
    When I burn Dvd using TDK or MMORE I got the message "Illegal Disk" and "Could not perform end of Disk at once". Strangely enough, when I use Imation DVD (that in one of your threads are described as pure crap)I have no problem. I burn using my Fujitsu Siemens laptop, that has a Combo CD DVD burner. The DVD burner is a Ricoh DVD+RW RW8165. The firmware should be updated (I have the 1.03 version).

    Here's my logfile (using MMORE):

    I forgot to give further informations.
    I use 8x one layer DVDs.
    In one of your previous replies I've found that probably I start my burning too close to the edge:
    (Last possible write address on media: 2295103 (510:01.28, 4482MB)
    Last address to be written: 2293455 (509:39.30, 4479MB)

    How can I change this setting?

    Thanks a lot

    Ok. Stupid question. I just have to put less data in the DVD. What is a safe amount 4.3 Gb, 4.4GB ?

    @camuffo - hi.....

    - EDIT OUT your serial number, it's probably been stolen by now

    - your firmware seems to be up to date

    - see that 4479MB in that 2nd line - you're burning way too close to outer edge of discs. set target size in DVD Shrink's preferences to 4300MB, thus avoiding outer edge of discs and not sacrificing much space.

    - while your firmware does seem to be up to date, it's not recognising your discs correctly. The media must be newer than your burner's firmware knows what to do with. you're using 8x discs, and as far as i'm aware this burner can only do 4x max (can't find the link at the moment) in which case that might explain why it doesn't recognise the 8x discs

    - with no newer firmware out there, for you to update to, you're going to keep having problems with these discs, as the burner isn't equipped (in it's firmware) to know what to do with the discs correctly

    - you have Nero's InCD installed. It's 'packet writing' software and doesn't always play well with standard Nero Burning Rom. Uninstall Nero, uninstall completely via Nero'c Clean Tools - " http://www.nero.com/en/Clean_Tools.html ", then reinstall Nero WITHOUT installing InCD

    Thanks creaky!

    After reading your answer I went to a store, but I didn't find any 4X DVD.

    I guess I'll have problems forever.

    Now it doesn't work also with imation.

    I've tried verbatim 8X and it worked, but with TX failed. I uninstalled INCD with InCD-CleanTool.

    Here's the tx failure logfile:

    no loss with the imation :)

    same again, media is not fully recognised...

    i was trying to find a recommended media list for this drive but google has hardly any info on this drive at all.... then we'd know what media you could buy and be sure it would work..

    I was also getting a ""Could not perform start of Disc-at-once" error - it would happen right away before anything could actually be written to the disc. I was using the memorex DVD+R DL media. My Nero version was 6.6.0.6 - so I downloaded and installed the 6.6.0.16 update from their website. It did make a difference; however it still didnt work - I was just getting a different error message: "Illegal Disc". I also downloaded a firmware update for my burner - NEC ND-3500A - if you have one of these - their website is actually pretty user friendly and I was able to find the correct doanload quickly. The weird thing was that the currently installed firmware version was 2.16 and the update that I downloaded was 2.1A - i wasnt sure which one was supposed to be newer. But the flash software is actually supposed to tell you if you have the latest version or if the version installed is newer that the one you are trying to put on it. After installing the 2.1A firmware I was able to burn a DVD-Video project successfully.

    @lilhd -

    - your burner's firmware is a fair few versions behind, 1.0C is here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1517

    - not very good media at all, get decent media

    i've used some of them, brother bought me a tub last Christmas. they all burnt fine and i've rarely had the need or want to recopy any of them so don't know how good they really are. come to think of it i have only watched a couple of those since burning...

    they're generally not though of as much good. get your firmware up to date and see how you get on with them. if you still have problems try some better discs.

    what i've noticed with the ones i have is that the dye does not reach the very edge of the discs, like a centimetre away from edge of the discs is see-thru. i permanently only burn to 4300MB anyway thus i always miss edge of discs however if the dye is like this at the edge of discs i'd be concerned as to quality throughout rest of disc....
