"Out of curiousity, did you kill those two MM utility files in your startup, as I believe both of those load on boot." No, but I am going to. Each time MM is run those same two files load and stay and my wife uses MM. My workaround is to kill those processes anytime I need to burn a DVD. Any idea what the process do? MM has not answered my inquiries. Thanks,
They are just utility files I know one is a diagnostic, and not necessary to start up. Go to run and then msconfig and uncheck them in your startup, see if this cures the problem.
This will solve your grief with Musicmatch interfering with Nero. That musicmatch mim.exe also lingers after you load & shut down musicmatch. Here is the message I got from musicmatch customer support concerning what it is & how to disable musicmatch's mim.exe. "Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Customer Support. When Musicmatch Jukebox 10 is installed, mim.exe and mimboot.exe are installed on your system. The mim.exe is a GUI-less application that provides much of the functionality needed by the Musicmatch Jukebox as well as improves the start up time of Musicmatch Jukebox. The mimboot.exe is a smaller application used to start mim.exe. Once mim.exe has been started the mimboot.exe application exits automatically. There are several advantages of the mim.exe application. With very few resources the mim.exe application allows the Musicmatch Jukebox to launch faster. mim.exe will continuously observe your configured Watchfolders and update the library to reflect added and changed tracks even when the Musicmatch Jukebox is not running. Also, when configured to do so, mim provides the capability to auto-launch Musicmatch Jukebox when a portable device is attached to your system. If these are not desired functions you can disable these processes by editing the registry. You should only attempt these changes if you feel comfortable making registry changes. It is highly recommended that you back up the relevant keys before making any changes. After making these changes, mim.exe will only start when you launch the Musicmatch Jukebox. You will need to edit the registry again after you close the Musicmatch Jukebox to disable the mim.exe process. Currently there are no other ways to disable these functions. To prevent mim.exe from starting when you log into your OS: - Open regedit - Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run - Remove the value with the name MimBoot. To terminate mim.exe when you close the jukebox: - Open regedit - Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MusicMatch\MusicMatch Jukebox\4.0\MainApp - Change the value for "ShutDownMIM". Set it to 1
Thanks much for the info. Here's the reply I received from MM/Yahoo: "Thank you for contacting Yahoo! Customer Care. Thank you for reporting this Musicmatch issue. Unfortunately we have no resolution at this time but have opened an engineering defect ticket for this issue. Our engineers are working to reproduce the issue, determine the root cause of the problem and identify a fix. Hi. I already posted here but without my log files. So, here is my problem. First I tried to burn a DVD with an Imation DVD-RW, and it says: Illegal disc. But then with a Sony-R I burned it perfectly. They told me before (in this thread) were several problems like Physical memory, which was low, or the part in the log that says: Media Specific [16..63], becaused it had 00 00 00 00, like that. But with the Sony-R appears the same thing and burned, as I sayed, perfectly. In stores they told me it wasn´t the DVD, even they told me Imation was a very good mark, that it was the program that I used for burning. They recomended nero (the one I'm using, even the version they recomend here, 6.6.0.18), or alcohol. I haven't used alcohol yet, but also used the one of DVD shrink and nothing. So I will post my two log files (Imation-RW; Sony-R) so if someone please can help me. Thank you. Free up some resources or buy more ram...512K is least recommended amount to have for backing up movies. This is what the sony tells us You got the good Japanese Sony's, they are made by Taiyo Yuden...tops. This will sometimes throw out a coaster when trying to booktype DVD-R discs, this is reserved for DVD+R discs. This is what Imations gives us.. Made by CMC Magnetics, some of the worst media manufacturers in the world. Did your salesman tell you that? Imation doesn't make the disc, they just put their name on it. Sony doesn't make the Japanese discs, they just put their name on them...they are made by Taiyo Yuden, arguably the top disc manufacturer out there. Do you think those salesmen care what brand you buy, nope, they don't work on commission so why should they. I will agree however that Nero is a big bloated quirky bohemouth of a suite, that will consume your time and patience...but IMHO if you require a RW to make a backup, look into verbatim RW's and see if you can get a successful burn from them.
Hey guys, You all seem pretty smart and definitely much, much smarter than I with computers. I've been burning for over a year without any problems and now I'm recieving the dreaded "Illegal Disk" message. For the past year or so I've been using dvd shrink and I know from the other posts... the all terrible Memorex DVD-R's. No problems ever. This weekend, friday - burned my last remaining memorex disk just fine, then bought a new package of them and "Ill. Disk". I found this site, returned the disks, bought some Verbatim DVD-R's, still recieving the error. I haven't changed a thing on my computer... I have no idea why it is not working anymore. I'm not the slightest bit intelligent with computers, please give me instructions in terms i'll understand to fix this if you can! My Log and thanks to the other posts I understand maybe 10 lines of this now! haha... That's about all I understand too...LOL Your Nero is ancient, try 6.6.0.18 here: http://httpdl2.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe Your firmware is current as of 2004...LOL I guess no more updates for this drive. DMA needs to be enabled, here is a guide courtesy of alkohol: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038 Yeah...the good stuff. Are they 16X rated? You can up the speed to 4X and then keep rising til you find your limit. This means that your burner doesn't like your discs, and since we know the discs are good and the firmware is old....well, you may need to try and find some older discs, or a new burner.
Hey, I really, really appreciate the speedy response! I upgraded my nero, thank you for the link, and I have set both of my controllers to DMA. I try burning another disk... failure - same reason. Looking at the report it says the DMA is still off, but if I check the primary and secondary are both set to DMA?!?!? Using the instructions you gave me, it said to uninstall them, that was only if DMA was not an option in the drop down right? B/c i did not reinstall, I just changed the setting to DMA if available. I don't understand what I'm doing at the moment or what DMA is, so I appologize for my stupidity. If I enabled it though, why is it still saying its off? Guidance please.... Uninstall your driver and reboot. Edit: Did you notice my last remark in my first post to you? Your burner is so old and not being updated through firmware upgrades that you may have a hard time with burns now, it you are able to burn at all.
I'll try that. And yes, I did read that. At the moment I'm just hoping that isn't the case. I bought my burner about 1.5 years ago, I know technology flies, but I'm outdated that quickly??? If that's the case, what is a good replacement - keep in mind I have no money! haha. I'll let you know how the install on the burner goes. Thanks for the speed again! You're a great help, I really appreciate it!
LOL...I really should take a break, I've been on here all day. Started at 630A, it is now 830P. I'm an NEC man, but there are many excellent drives out there that are really pretty cheap. http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp?SubCategory=5 Any on this page should do, with the exception of the sony. I would lean towards the NEC (biased opinion), LG, BenQ, Pioneer, Lite-On. Since you have no money, don't even look at the Plexy.
I noticed NEC doesn't offer any DL burners though... I would like to start using DL as soon as the priced drops a bit on the media. Tried uninstalling... Hit the uninstall, it removed it from the list of drives. Rebooted - it didn't say anything about installing the drive, but i checked in the device manager and it was listed there. Tried burning... Failed, the log still says that the DMA is off... any ideas how in the hell i can get this turned on? And thanks for staying on to help me! indows XP 5.1 IA32 WinAspi: - ahead WinASPI: File 'H:\Program Files\Ahead\nero\Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=2.0.1.74, size=164112 bytes, created 10/26/2004 5:35:34 PM Nero Version: 6.6.0.18 Internal Version: 6, 6, 0, 18e (Nero Express) Recorder: <Memorex DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16>Version: BWSE - HA 0 TA 0 - 6.6.0.18 Adapter driver: <atapi> HA 0 Drive buffer : 2048kB Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ATAPI CD-ROM: <Memorex DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16>Version: BWSE - HA 0 TA 0 - 6.6.0.18 Adapter driver: <atapi> HA 0 === Scsi-Device-Map === CdRomPeripheral : Memorex DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16 atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: Off DiskPeripheral : SAMSUNG SP1213N atapi Port 0 ID 1 DMA: On CdRomPeripheral : PIONEER DVD-ROM DVD-120R atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: On CdRomPeripheral : LITE-ON LTR-52327S atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: On === CDRom-Device-Map === Memorex DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16 F: CDRom4 PIONEER DVD-ROM DVD-120R D: CDRom1 LITE-ON LTR-52327S E: CDRom2 ======================= AutoRun : 1 Excluded drive IDs: WriteBufferSize: 74448896 (0) Byte ShowDrvBufStat : 0 BUFE : 0 Physical memory : 511MB (523632kB) Free physical memory: 127MB (130348kB) Memory in use : 75 % Uncached PFiles: 0x0 Use Inquiry : 1 Global Bus Type: default (0) Check supported media : Disabled (0) 19.3.2006 UDF/ISO compilation 8:11:38 PM #1 Phase 112 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1832 DVD-Video files reallocation started 8:11:38 PM #2 Phase 114 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1832 DVD-Video files reallocation completed (no file modified) 8:11:38 PM #3 Text 0 File Isodoc.cpp, Line 6359 UDF document burn settings ------------------------------------------ Determine maximum speed : FALSE Simulate : FALSE Write : TRUE Finalize CD : TRUE Multisession : FALSE Burning mode : DAO Mode : 1 UDF Mode : UDF/ISO bridge UDF Revision : 1.02 UDF Partition Type : physical ISO Level : 1 (Max. of 11 = 8 + 3 char) Character set : ISO 9660 Joliet :FALSE Allow pathdepth more than 8 directories : FALSE Allow more than 255 characters in path : FALSE Write ISO9660 ;1 file extensions : TRUE 8:11:38 PM #4 Phase 111 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1832 DVD-Video files sorted 8:11:38 PM #5 Text 0 File Reader.cpp, Line 127 Reader running 8:11:38 PM #6 Text 0 File Writer.cpp, Line 122 Writer Memorex DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16 running 8:11:38 PM #7 ISO9660GEN -11 File geniso.cpp, Line 3309 First writeable address = 0 (0x00000000) 8:11:38 PM #8 ISO9660GEN -11 File geniso.cpp, Line 3309 First writeable address = 0 (0x00000000) 8:11:38 PM #9 Text 0 File Burncd.cpp, Line 3233 Turn on Disc-At-Once, using DVD media 8:11:38 PM #10 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 270 Last possible write address on media: 2298495 (510:46.45, 4489MB) Last address to be written: 2185727 (485:43.02, 4268MB) 8:11:38 PM #11 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 282 Write in overburning mode: NO (enabled: CD) 8:11:38 PM #12 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 2483 Recorder: Memorex DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16, Media type: DVD-R Disc Manufacturer: MCC 03 - RG20 Disc Application Code: 64, Disc Physical Code: 193 8:11:38 PM #13 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 448 >>> Protocol of DlgWaitCD activities: <<< ========================================= 8:11:38 PM #14 Text 0 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 838 Setup items (after recorder preparation) 0: TRM_DATA_MODE1 () 2 indices, index0 (150) not provided original disc pos #0 + 2185728 (2185728) = #2185728/485:43.3 relocatable, disc pos for caching/writing not required/ required, no patch infos -> TRM_DATA_MODE1, 2048, config 0, wanted index0 0 blocks, length 2185728 blocks [Memorex DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16] -------------------------------------------------------------- 8:11:38 PM #15 Text 0 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 1051 Prepare recorder [Memorex DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16] for write in CUE-sheet-DAO DAO infos: ========== MCN: "" TOCType: 0x00; @apredeus - - lots of bugs fixed since version, update to 7.0.8.2 from here - http://www.nero.com/nero7/eng/nero7-up.php - burner's firmware is up to date - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2175 - free memory could be better, make sure to close down more programs prior to all dvd work/burning so as to free up more memory - crap quality discs, try decent disc such as Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden - see previous comment
@Dave_3 I'm out of answers, but all of those NEC drives are capable of burning DL discs, if you click on the link for the specific drive a new page will come up that gives you all the drives specs...I don't think you can buy a new burner nowadays that is not DL capable. As far as your log goes, maybe creaky can see something I'm missing, but I think you are running out of options. Have you tried any 8X media, maybe from a friend or relative...you need something older to try.
LOCOENG / Dave_3 - sorry, meant to comment.. all i can see wrong is the DMA still being OFF. not that it's any different to other methods of kicking the DMA into touch, but it's worth a try - - just be very careful with regedit in case you fry your registry, that often offends :O
After two years of burning with no problems what so ever, suddenly I got the dreaded "illegal disk" message more times than I can remember. I tried all these different disks: Verbatim, Memorex, TDK, Office Max, Office Depot, Imation, Staples, and Maxell. NONE of them worked. I followed all the advice in this forum about firmware and conflicting programs, etc. I was convinced it was either my burner or my computer itself. Then I bought Sony -R and they worked just fine. I then ordered the Taiyo Yuden online, and they work just fine as well. I will save myself additional frustration (not to mention gas and time) by just ordering online.
@cosmicd - i had this sort of problem out of the blue, well mine was worse, i wasn't getting burn failures, but burnt movies skipping & freezing on playback. anyway after much messing and checking, in my case it turned out the burner was sneakily trying to tell me it needed retiring. i got a new burner (without changing any settings) and a lot of discs later i haven't looked back. just something to keep in mind when all settings are spot on and all checking has been done. that one even caught me out for a while
