    I don't see a whole lot wrong with your log...can't find firmware, Nero is current, media is excellent. My only thought would be that the TY discs are not compatable with your drive, I find this unlikely because TY is some of the best in the world, but I would try another brand and see if you have any luck.

    I have tried Pengo, Imation, Maxell (which I was able to get my one and only successful burn with, but no more) and Sony. I'm pretty lost here.

    @hitmang

    All of these discs can be dodgy especially if made in Taiwan, you need to stick with media made in Japan even with the Maxell's and Sony's. The Pengo's, Imation's and especially Memorex are ones to avoid like the plague.

    Those are the Sony's in your log right? Are they newer discs like say above 8X rated speed? You might want to try either finding media that is lower in speed or higher in speed than the rating on the ones you have. I'm at a loss on this one, maybe creaky will pop back in.

    Both the Maxells and Sonys (in the log) were Japan-made and the standard 8x speed.

    hi, just read LOCOENG's last reply there...so i will see if i can add anything new; not sure if i can though :)

    can't see anything amiss in the logfile; i think the burner is an 'OEM' burner ie supplied with your PC going by the 'GA03' version of your firmware, and as far as i can see the firmware is up to date..

    anyway, we talked about Pengo a bit here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/193259 and as for Imation, they use varying quality in disc manufacturers and you can't guarantee which manufacturers' discs you'll get just by looking at the disc tub..

    Hey Gurus, I seem to have run into the same "Illegal Disc" problem. I was working with the Memorex DVD-Rs (which I now know are crap) but they burnt just fine. Now I've switched to Sony DVD-Rs(1x-16x) (Made in Japan) and they don't seem to burn at all. The Maximum burn speed shown is 2.4x and then I get hit with the "Illegal Disc" problem.

    I own a NEC ND-6500A DVD+-RW drive (MAX Burn Speed 8x) that shipped with my Dell Laptop.

    Firmware: 2.03D
    Nero Version: 6.6.0.6

    Could you guys please help me out?

    Here's a copy of my logfile from Nero:

    Lets start with an upgrade of Nero to 6.6.0.18:

    http://httpdl2.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe

    Two drives in the laptop...fancy. Anywho, let get the dma on for this one while we are here (shouldn't have anything to do with your error).

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038

    And, maybe turn off the high compatability mode with the DVD-R's.

    Good luck and happy burning.

    Hey guys, first post, but ive randomly lurked here for other problems ive had :)
    Another Illegal Disc error to add to this heap, perhaps someone can help me sort it out. This only started to happen recently, and its happened with 2 seperate brands of dvd-r's. the frist batch were some maxell dvd-r's that i thought just was a bad batch, so i bought some fujifilm's and am having the same prob.

    Alright I upgraded to v6.6.0.18 but am still running into the same problem.

    I don't have a 2nd drive, the 2nd drive is a virtual drive to mount isos, bins/cues etc. Sorry should've mentioned that, although like you said, it should have nothing to do with my error.

    How do I do that? I looked through Nero's Options and wasn't able to find any option to change the DVD compatibility mode.

    Thanks for your all your help so far.

    @oldscho0l

    Welcome to AD.

    Current firmware for your drive is BYS3, it hasn't been updated since feb of 2004 which makes it kinda old. Firmware can be found here:

    http://dhc014.rpc1.org/indexOEM.htm

    But according to this your drive is actually a Lite-On and can be crossflashed to use Lite-On firmware, which might be a little more current. Crossflashing is risky and can fry your drive if not done correctly...if you are interested, here is some more info: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php?DVDnameid=741&Search=Search&list=

    Your Nero version is also a bit quirky, I would suggest using the clean tool to remove your current version and downgrade to version 6.6.0.18. Make sure to save your serial key in a safe place for reinstallation before removing Nero or any other software.

    Cleantool: http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/Nero_6_CleanTool.html
    6.6.0.18: http://httpdl2.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe

    This shouldn't have anything to do with your burning problem, but it is a good idea to go ahead and take care of it now. DMA should be on for all drives, enable via this guide: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038

    Everything else seems to be in order, nothing terribly wrong with the rest of your log, but the prodisc Sony's may be a little dodgy...maybe try some verbatims(made in taiwan) or Sony, Fuji, Maxell, Taiyo Yuden (made in Japan).

    @djmystery

    The option, if using Recode, will be in the second screen under more options. If using Nero Burning Rom, select your drive from the top tool bar, highlight your drive and the feature should be in the options at the bottom.

    Are the files being backed up coming off your virtual drive by any chance? Try from your regular HDD if so.

    Have to say, you guys have excellent turnaround time for responses. It's amazing!

    Anyhow, no, the data is coming off my HDD.

    My only other suggestion to you dj is to try another brand of disc...Verbatims are excellent. Fuji, Maxell, Taiyo Yuden if made in Japan are also highly recommended.

    As for the response time, I am at work and luckily have some time to spare...

    I'm baffled on this one...
