    @greavsy -

    - Nero's a bit old, latest 6.x version is 6.6.0.18, you might want to download "update package 1" from here - http://ww2.nero.com/enu/nero-up.php

    - firmware's a few versions out of date, 1.0A is here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1740

    - sufficient total memory but you need to always ensure sufficient free memory by closing down more programs prior to dvd work/burning

    - not very good quality discs

    - see previous comment

    - CDRALW2K.SYS is part of Roxio. try uninstalling Roxio (doesn't always play well with Nero), then you might need to fully remove using Roxio Zapper - http://www.microadvantage.net/utilities

    @creaky
    Back on Dec 8, 'laptop9' was left kind of hanging.
    I was of no help and I don't see where you jumped in to clear up the problem.
    If you did, please forgive.Age related.

    @attar - quite right, laptop9 was indeed left hanging on Dec 8. Oops :)

    @laptop9 -

    - not too bad, 6.6.0.18 is latest 6.x version

    - firmware's up to date - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1920

    - DMA needs to be ON, fix via this - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm
    Not sure what 'dtscsi' ports are but see if the DMA fix works

    - make sure to free up more memory prior to ALL dvd work/burning

    - see if the DMA fix works

    @JebusC -

    - cheers; i rarely unsubscribe from threads so they always pop up again when added to over time, no escape for the wicked :)

    - see here -

    - i take it your drive is a Gateway OEM drive then ?

    - not very good media

    - see previous comment

    - simulations are always a good test to stop wasting discs, nice one

    Try burning at 4x my NEC 1300A does not like burning at 2.4X in Nero, always get an error at that speed. And creaky is right you are not using the best of media, IMHO if these are 16x disks I would try an 8x media and see if this works. Just my two cents.

    NEC support for that drive shows only the following (referring to DVD-R):

    Presumably referring to the actual code that the media presents using DVDinfo, etc, rather than the label on the package.

    I too am getting the horrid Illegal disk error. I've checked the firmware, DMA settings, went through msconfig and deselected everything but Nero and still get it. I haven't tried different media yet, but I have messed with record speed. I appreciate all the help.

    Hey thanks to the numerous responses in the threads I've poured over, I can now burn DVDs!

    I had a similar problem with numerous people -- I could burn CDRs but could not burn DVDs -- I would get the "illegal disc" error.

    Lo & behold I was using the Memorex 16x DVD-R !!! I tried several of them from my 50-pack with the same error. You guys were right about Memorex being crap!!! I went out and bought Maxwell 8x DVD-R and it worked like a charm.

    By the way, I'm using Nero 6.6.0.15

    @Kenster1 - hey good work :)

    @Brandonv2 -

    - 7.0.1.4b is here - http://www.nero.com/nero7/eng/nero7-up.php

    - firmware's up to date

    - 1MB, that doesn't sound good

    - if other suggestions don't help, maybe try better media

    - see previous comment

    - simulation's a great idea but why so slow ?. try 4x

    - InCD is Nero's horrid 'packet writing software', uninstall Nero then uninstall completely via Nero's Clean Tools, then reinstall Nero WITHOUT installing InCD

    Thank you for all the help. It turns out I had a problem with the media, and insufficient power from a failing power supply. I appreciate all of the advice.

    @Brandonv2 -

    nice one, happy burning..

    @nexuss -

    - my God that version is out of the bible, update to latest 6.x version, 6.6.0.18 (Update-Package 1) from here - http://www.nero.com/nero6/enu/nero-up.php

    - yup, Nero's too old to recognise your burner, update Nero

    - DMA needs to be ON for that Sony burner, fix via this - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm

    - very nice discs

    - follow ALL suggestions..

    - CDRALW2K.SYS is part of Roxio. try uninstalling Roxio (doesn't always play well with Nero), then you might need to fully remove using Roxio Zapper - http://www.microadvantage.net/utilities

    You did not follow all of creaky's suggestions.

    DMA is still off for this drive, use the link that creaky gave you to turn it on.

    Try it at 4x and see if it works.

    You still have Roxio installed, you need to uninstall it. This program and Nero do not get along.

    Edit

    You are burning too close to the edge, reset your size to 4334.
