I recieved a HP DVD 940 burner for xmas that came with Nero OEM suite. I still haven't got the damn thing working & I'm about to throw the %$£"ing through the window.

I'm trying to burn a video file. I go through the step by step process and when I click on 'Burn' the 'video window' freezes. The program 'Nero' then crashes. I'm not too familiar with DVD burning & have read something about conflicts. I've deleted programs which may be conflicting: Ulead, Roxio, Mustek etc. Now I'm stumped..

Can anyone help? PLEASE!!! As I'm just about to either jump on it or throw it from a very high bridge!!!

    Many thanks....

There is a good chance that your OEM did not come with the DVD-Video plug-in so it won't burn.

You can get the plug-in here:
    http://www.nero.com/enu/DVD_Video_Plug_in_InfoPage.html

    Edit:
See if it left you a Nero log:
    Look here:

    If Nero 7...
    C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory.log

Newer Nero 7 versions are saved in:
    C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Ahead\Nero Burning ROM

    If Nero 6...
    C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log

If you find it, please post it.

Nero OEMs are rather useless without the plug-in. They are just meant to get you to buy drive because they can list "Nero Included!" on the box.

Are you trying to burn an encrypted DVD without some program to remove them? Nero by itself cannot copy DVDs without help.

    Thanks for the replies.

I'm not sure about the 'encrypted DVD' comment. What program do I need to remove it? What does InCD4 do? Many thanks.

First, you actually have a Nero serial number so you should edit your post to remove them from each of the three burn logs you posted.
find the long number that starts with 1A20.....

Second, The three logs show that the DVD was burned each time:
Put your burned disc in your computer and find it in Windows Explorer. Click Properties and see if anything is on it.
Try playing the burned DVD in your computer.

You still have both Roxio and InCD installed according to the drivers listed at the bottom of each log.
You can run Nero's driver cleaner and registry checker tools to remove these and make any needed registry corrections.
    Links here:

    InCD General CleanTool

    Registry Checker and Driver CleanTool

You should consider adding more RAM:
This is not causing you any problems as far as I can see but it will speed up the process.

    Thanks for your patience...

Sorry, this was the error log I meant to send you.

For some reason, if I uninstall & then reinstall Nero, it burns on the first go, but then crashes (video screen freezes, no progress on the progress chart, but time still ticks over) when tried again.

I've checked the burnt DVD using Win Explorer & it said that it was empty. I've now uninstalled Nero & Incd4 and used the clean tools.

The error log below was created before I uninstalled everything

Yep, this one is a bit tougher.

A few things I spotted from this log:
Remove your Nero using the uninstall tool and then install these less buggy versions:
    Package 1, Contains Nero

    Package 2 contains NeroVision Express

The reason to remove and install the new version is because of this:
What this actually means, I don't know, but after this log entry was the following error message:
Hopefully removing and installing the newer version will correct this.
Also, when you set your burn settings in NeroVision, try selecting a folder location on your hard drive for a target instead of the DVD burner. You can always go back and use Nero Burning ROM to burn the folder to a DVD. This will seperate the two parts of the process and even if it does not work will allow us to isolate the problem better.

    Thanks for the reply...
Followed your instructions & uninstalled, cleaned & then reinstalled newer versions. the file burnt ok the first time, but then same problem occurred on second attempt (video freezes, no progress etc.)

    Here's the log history file.

    Many thanks...

All three new Nero logs you posted show successful burns.

You mentioned the video freezing and progress stopping. Your burn logs do not show that. You had a previous log from NeroVision. So I'm assuming this is where the problem is because you cannot watch the video while burning. You can do that while encoding with NeroVision. See if you can find a log from that.
With the amount of RAM you have you should have as much stuff disabled as possible and don't have the video display running.

I don't know what would change between the first and second time to cause it to fail on the second attempt, other than memory or something from the first attempt conflicting with the second attempt, like a duplicate file or something else.

Please try Nero Vision again. When you get to the Burn Options screen, Set the parameters for burning to "Write to Hard Disk Folder".
Save and then post the log file from that.

    Thanks for the reply again..

Honestly, even though it may have said 'successful burns' the screen was frozen and the DVD was blank.

I tried burning it again today, & again it seemed to work only the once. I noticed that when I insert a DVD, I don't know why, but on different occasions the E: icon either says 'E: CD Drive' of 'E: Nerovisi'. I cannot seem to open the 'E: CD Drive' it says 'incorrect function'. The 'E: Nerovisi' has only appeared a few times & funnily enough has worked. 'E: Nerovisi' contained VS_Audio & TS_Video, don't know where these came from & can't seem to get them back.

Will this have anything to do with it?

    Many thanks....

All I can give you are theories.

First, You are using a DVD RW disc. This is an erasable disc that, as far as I can tell, you are using again and again.
Now, you said that at one time when you inserted a DVD (Which I assume is the same DVD RW you have been using)

into your E: drive, you saw :
What you saw were the AUDIO_TS and the VIDEO_TS folders which had been burned to the disc previously.
What that means is that at some point you were able to burn the video to the DVD.
Now whether or not you are erasing the disc or not after each attempt, I don't know. I do know that once you write to any blank DVD using "DAO" or Disc at Once, then no further writing is possible:
    19:59:40 #6 Text 0 File Burncd.cpp, Line 3233
I need you to stop trying to burn the DVD until you get NeroVision working correctly.

    From my last reply:
Do you see why? I want to separate the two main steps of the process.
The first step being the conversion of the video to DVD-Video using NeroVision.
The second step of the process is when the Nero Burn engine writes the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders (created in the first step) to the blank DVD.

    IMHO,
Using any kind of external drive can be asking for trouble, coupled with a minimal amount of RAM, 256 MB in your case, and then trying to run a memory hog program like Nero.
As near as I can tell, your PC is not a laptop because it has the Sony CRX320 CDRW/DVD ROM, which wouldn't fit in any laptop I know of. (Am I right?) I assume your PC has an empty drive bay (does it?) in it which you could install the HP DVD burner. The thing is, that for the money you spent on the external burner, you could have bought an internal drive and had enough money left over for another stick of RAM. This would be a vast improvement over your current setup.... Just my opinion. I want to help you get your current setup working if possible

Drive E is unaccessable because you are attempting to open it while the comp is already working with it,to explore the disk eject the dvd then right clik on drive E, left clik open (but do not release until you have closed the burner with the disk in the tray) there will be a pause and a few seconds later the window will appear showing what's written to disk,if the window is blank then the disk is empty

PS: more ram would be a plus and preferably a matched pair of 256MB to 512MB or better still two sticks of matched 512MB as your comp will perform better as dual channel

If you have tried just burning a normal data disk and it's worked ok then there's a good chance it is a ram issue ,as i use internal & and external drives no prob, go to HP's home site and see if any drivers are available for your model burner

    Hi,

Thanks for all your suggestions. I've just discovered that Nero burns DVDs & works fine in Safe Mode. Any suggestions why?

    Thanks.....
