Nero transcoding freeze

    I have a bizarre issue that I am unable to resolve.
    Using Nero I am able to burn CD's, Data Dvd's and even (most of the time) copy dvd's.... however, everytime I try to "transcode" a dvd with Nero express... it starts fine and then after 10 minutes (or so) freezes up and locks up my computer. OR on occasion, I get "the blue screen" with the message "page fault".
    I've tried updating my Version.... (6.6.1.4)
    Rolling back my version... (6.6.0.15)
    I've even tried installing the trial version of Nero 7 - To see if that would solve the issue...
    And I still have the same problem.
    So I've restored my system to the last point that I remember that it was functioning properly - and still the same problem.
    Prior to a week ago... eveything was functioning properly... I installed an mp3 player driver from Creative labs - that I later saw caused a conflict and have since removed and I updated to Nero 6.6.1.4. (prior to reading about all the problems... so I cleaned that version and went back to my original).
    But besides that- that is the only changes that I have made in the last few months.

    I'm out of ideas... does anybody have any clue on what could be causing this issue...?

    Besides Gwen good suggestion I would add 1 thing in the mix. After you uninstall Nero and run the clean tool reboot and run a registry cleaner like http://cccleaner.com then uninstall 6.6.0.18.
    Uninstalling and reinstalling any program even using their clean tools can still leave junk behind.

    Vision (think that's what you are using when you say Express & transcode) is pretty cpu intensive. You have great ram but since this is a laptop too you may be overheating. A cooling pad may help.
    Also shut down any unnessecary programs.
    Give that a go and let us know how it goes - good, bad or otherwise.

    First I wanted to thank everyone for their input and quick response!
    You're all amazing.
    I followed the instructions to the letter (cleantool, clean registry, reinstall, even the cooling pad)... Ran the transcoding program and (drumroll) "Transcoding completed successfully".

    I did a few more burns - and after the 2nd one it started to freeze again (even with the pad!) - but I'm concerned that overheating may be an issue with this laptop in general (I've already had it serviced once).

    At least now I know.

    Any ideas besides a cooling pad to reduce this?

    Also - I'm thinking of buying a "media pc"... any brand suggestions?

    Good to hear you got at least 1 transcoded :)

    Well you can take a can of compressed air and try and blow out some dust around the fans in the lappy. They don't have the best air circulation.

    If you not already @ are doing some 'regular' DVDs/CDs burns then using Vision - reboot 1st or shut down for a few minutes.
    When using Vision - shut down everything you can like firewall, antivirus, spyware (disconnect from the internet).

    Some more suggestions (if not already doing them)
    Keep up to date on all your antivirus & spyware definitions along with regular scans of the pc.

    Run a disc cleanup & system defrag regularly.
    Depending on how fragmented the hard drive is - this can make it work harder too.

    Now for a media PC - can't really help you there. My suggestion is custom build the one you want to your specifications. Better to me at least than having to do the + or - side of which manufacturer has what and I get this w/ Dell but this with HP that sort of thing.
