I opened the drive unit to clean the lens. I saw only one lens (unless another one is hidden somewhere), so I cleaned it up with lens cleaning solution and a Q-tip. When I opened the unit, something was loose inside. I tried to find out what it was and it was 2 pieces of plastic ring (I think the kind that are used in the blank CD case for stacking up the CD). Well, I don't know how they got there! Maybe the plastic ring was sticking on a CD and I didn't notice when I put the CD in the tray. Then, when the burner got warmer, the ring probably fell down inside. That's my guess anyway. So I removed those 2 rings and put back the unit inside the computer. I tried to burn again a CD, but still have write error (more towards the end of the burning process this time). I think that the writer got probably damaged because of those 2 plastic rings that fell inside. There's still one thing I don't really understand though: why write errors only occured while burning CD-R? They never occured while burning DVD. Anyway, I think I've done everything I could to "save" that writer. I spent enough time and blank media for testing not to mention time from people like you on that forum trying to help. It's time to let go. I'm gonna replace that burner. Do you have any suggestion as for a recommended brand? Or is there any brand I should avoid buying? Thanks again for helping
