I have a Pioneer 104 writer and I use Nero to burn my discs which it does fine. However it will only burn at 1x. The 104 writer is supposed to burn up to 2.3x and I have tried everything with Nero to get it to burn at 2x but it doesn't want to know. Any thoughts?

Your DVD-R media may not support 2x, but 1x. Many cheap disks support only 1x

You can also use nero cd speed - to check the burning speed of the media.

I think you have to have already burned info on the dvd to check..

Some manufacturers of cheapo media are using the dvd id's of other brands:

eg. it maybe advertised as 2x speed media BUT in fact it may only be 1x - this can result in bad burns or even damage to your rewriter.

Just thought I would add that....
