After reading through the various guides and forums, I have chosen to use the following when backing up DVDs:

    Medium: Memorex 4.7 gb, 4X DVD-R
    DVD Decrypter 3.2.2.0
    DVD Shrink 3.1.7.6
    Nero 6 Ultra Edition

Although I'm able to use these tools without a hitch most of the time, sometimes when Nero engages the burn process, I receive an error indicating that my DVD-R is the wrong media type for the intended compilation. The DVD tray is ejected and I am prompted to replace the DVD-R with either DVD+R or DVD+RW.

The only way that I have found to work around this error, is to start the compression process all over again using DVD Shrink. Although I hate to repeat this 30 minute process once again, by doing so the burn process normally executes without a hitch.

Can someone explain why this is happening and how I can fix it?

    Thanks for your help...

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600
    Intel Pentium 4HT, 3000 MHz (3.75 x 800)
    512 MB RAM
    LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-451S

Have you tried different DVD media. The Memorex brand has a really bad reputation around here.

    Hope this helps.

I ordered 100 Ritek GO4 DVD-Rs this week after reading that this was the gold standard for blank dvd media so I guess I'll soon find out whether or not the Memorex discs are to blame.

However, because I can get Nero to burn to the disk after repeating the DVD Shrink process, this seems to suggest that the media is not to blame.

Would others agree that this is a media problem and that some better blanks will do the trick?

Are you using Nero to burn inside of Shrink or are you using Shrink to extract the files/iso image and then using Nero to burn? I have had sucess with the Memorex DVD-R's and I Shrink and then open Nero to burn. The media should be okay, but Ritek is definitely the way to go. If you are performing everything inside of shrink, then you should try shrink/nero separately.

    Thanks for your responses...

I've experienced this problem when burning BOTH from within DVD Shrink and Nero.

I'm going to add to my previous posts...

The Ritek disks arrived yesterday but the problem persists. I get the following message occasionally upon launching Nero to burn files compressed by DVD Shrink and ALWAYS when I attempt to use Nero to burn an ISO file:

"Sorry, your compilation cannot be written on this kind of disc. Please insert a disc of the correct type or modify the settings of your compilation to make it compatible with the current disc.

Disc required for the compilation: DVD+R/RW,DVD-RW
Disc type in the recorder: DVD-R

Does anybody have a suggestion for a fix?

    I would uninstall Nero.
    Reboot the computer.
Download and run any of the needed Clean Tools to completely remove all traces of Nero.

    Reboot the computer.

    Then start over.
Download all the newest updates to Nero. All four update packages have been updated in the last 1-3 weeks.

    Install and reboot.

    Then try again.
    If it works, fine.
If it doesn't work, contact Nero customer service.

I did as you suggested and installed all of the latest Nero updates, Veblin, but the problem has not been fixed.

I guess that I will have to contact the people at Ahead.

I wonder if Nero 6 does not support the DVD burner that I have: LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-451?

I really can't think of anything else.

Here are some animated guides for burning with Nero in "DVD-Video" mode or "UDF/ISO" mode.

Maybe you will see something you are doing wrong or some setting that is incorrect.
