And as if its sucky editor and burning features weren't enough, now NeroVision is messing up the chapters. I select four chapters on the time line thus creating 4 different snapshots of the 4 different parts of the mpeg. However, NVE is changing the order of the snapshots, so that in the menu for example, the snapshot for chapter 2 is really the first scene of chapter 3, and so on. When you click on the Chapter 2 snapshot however, the correct portion of the mpeg will play.

Will NERO ever cease to amaze us? In their desire to be everything to everyone NERO's creators have merely come up with another clunky Adaptec CD Creator? What gives!!!

    Hi Samuelzen,

Let's see if I can clear this all up.

Dolby 5.1 is an audio standard, and for any software or hardware solution to support it, they have to pay Dolby some rather high patent fees for both Decoding and Encoding. You have serpate fees associated with Decoding and seperate fees associated with Encoding to Dolby. These fees are two high for 99% of OEMs to include in their bundles, so they for the most part do not include the ability to Decode or Encode Dolby audio channels.

Such as is the case with your Lite-On Bundle.

Your Sony Camcorder can capture audio in Dolby 5.1 surround and NVE can not import the audio track as it does not have the ability to decode Dolby.

If it had captured the audio as MPEG, LPCM, or even as Dolby Digital AC3-2channel then NVE would have no trouble working with the audio channel of your video file.

If you were to purchase the Dolby 5.1 Surround Plugin, which by the way all of the fee goes to Dolby, then you would be able to work with the source directly captured from your Sony CamCorder

    Hi ClaudMC and PhotoG,

The issue with NVE beleiving incorrect file size of some audio files is already being looked into by our Engineers, as I saw a bug entry on that a week or two back. But could you fill me in more on the overburning issue? I've not been overburning for quite some time, and this is the first I've heard of a problem with Nero in this area. I would think it would be something we could easliy address.

    Regards,

Update on the experiment I posted July 14, 2005 at 16:23:

My experiments pointed out that Nero worked fine with an edited clip captured from a VCR source and only has trouble with MORE than ONE edited VCR clip. This week, I did have problems with an edited clip. I had a tape of 3 older TV shows that was already edited of commercials, so I ran it through the capture device as one long file (didn't separate the shows). I then edited several seconds from the beginning and end of the file and tried to render a DVD with NVE. It seemed to be transcoding and clicking right along, but it disappeared off the desktop at the very end of the file. Tried again, same result. Never had that to happen before with just ONE edited file captured from the VCR.

I opened the file in VideoREDO, separated the 3 shows, took a second or two of black screen off the beginning and end of each clip and rejoined them together. This time NVE accepted it and rendered the video. That is the only time I have had a problem with trying to make a video from just one edited clip from the VCR.

I can't pin down the whole thing, but it seems NVE has issues with black screen, at least when capturing from the VCR in my case.

    Hi Craig
I appreciate your response re audio length. FYI I have NO issues as regards overburning! Of course, I am only making slideshows of digital images. All in this area appears to be cool.

I posted here some time ago regarding the hanging/crashing problems whilst transcoding with NVE. Well I finally gave up and wiped my hard drive and completely re-installed XP Pro sp2. I then added Norton Internet Security 2004 and MS Office 2003 and downloaded all the relevant Microsoft critical updates and so on. The only other bit of software I installed before Nero was Xp Anti Spy. Then installed the latest Nero 6, Nero VE and Showtime (but not InCD). I didnt use the patch SMCPatch.exe. I installed nothing else and tinkered with no settings.

I expected great things. Instead I got a hung computer and this log

Creaky B: Thats all the log file there is....

the line "[01:10:26] DVDEngine ....>Cell: C_IDN=1" is the last line.

I have just run the patch SMCpatch.exe and re-run NVE. Same problem, same log file.

Hey Darius, welcome to the disaffected-with-NVE club. I hear the membership is growing in leaps and bounds!

I've posted here, I've written to Nero, I've tried everything I could think of...but still no answer as to why NVE suddenly stops in the middle of burning a DVD (either to disk or to the hard drive).

I guess the NERO gods are holidaying in Hawaii!

    Hi Darius,

I would need to see the full log file. The portion that you provided does not show any error messages up to the point that it's cut off.

    Hi Darius,

Strange, I did not see the rest of the posting until I responded. :-(

Is this the log file you chose to save at the end of the write attempt?

Or did you go into the C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Ahead\NeroVision and look for a log file called NeroVisionLog.txt?

If you just did a save at the end of the write, go to the above location and see if that log file reflects what you saved. It should.

And is it reporting an error message and allowing you to save the log file, or is it just closing without any error message?

    Craig,

That log file is all I have. It is from the directory you specified. As Nero just dies (causes computer to reboot with no warning or just locks up totally) I do not have the option to save a log file.

I have in the past (back when Nero worked) had the option to save a log file so I do know to what you refer.

At the moment NVE is running happily through transcoding and then suddenly in the middle of operation the computer reboots - no error message, no warning. The other varient it that the computer just hangs and locks up completely. Only a hardware reset will work.

    Regards
    Darius

In your 21,July 2005 reply, you wrote: “Dolby 5.1 Audio support costs an extra $0.40 cents”

Please post the web address where I can download the Dolby Plug-In for only $0.40 cents. When I click on the link which appears when I try to open the file in NVE, I am taken to a Nero web site where they want around $25 for the Plug-in.

You also wrote“the Camcorder you are using does capture the audio in Dobly 5.1 channel.”

In your 29,July 2005 reply, you wrote: “Your Sony Camcorder can capture audio in Dolby 5.1 surround.”

It’s an analog camcorder. I am pretty sure that it is my Lite-On DVD Player/Recorder that creates the Dolby 5.1, as I found that it says so in the manual for the Lite-On DVD Player/Recorder.

My latest problem is that the interface for NVE started cutting off the bottom and right side of the interface so I can no longer see all of the options along the right side and none of the options at the bottom of the interface.

    Thanks for your response,

-for the overburning problem introduced by 6 version of Nero Burning
I've mailed several times the support in march 2004, november 2004...
"when using nero 6 (since the first release untill the last), I can't overburn 650MB cd more than 670MB without the message "insert a 80min media", I can overburn these media for 2 years to 688MB without any problems, and I can only do this with nero 5.XX, so until now I uninstalled nero 6 or tried to install 5 and 6 version in the same machine (but a few parameters of the 5 and the 6 seems to reset to default when I'm using one after the other)."
I had a response of the french support in january 2005, giving me a serial number I had lost (I had to send My recorder Bill and send scans of my Nero cd's!), but never had a response for my problem.I had now one PC with the 5 version and another whith the 6.

-But my main problem is to use NVE 2 or 3 with my most powerfull PC,
as any preview in a slideshow project with transitions make NVE close
    itself;
I was thinking in an illegal memory access, but disabling all that I can disable and run in VGA mode don't change anything; so maybe there's something wrong in the code accessing to Directx 3D runtime
or video drivers or a codec(as on my other PC the preview is in 256 colors with a nvidia video card, maybe the problem is there).

In the first releases of NVE 2, it was also shutting itself when encoding the video in mpeg, I had to quickly put NVE in systray to have a chance to finish the encoding process (for exactly the same project it could close after one minute or 40 minutes of encoding process, I had to undelete temp files successfully encoded, and make a project in several times).

    thanks.

    Hi DariusJ,

Hmm, you have a strange issue here. How were your AVI source files created?

Could you try something for me? Launch Nero Recode and go to the option for 'Recode DVDs and Videos to Nero Digital' and use this option to convert one of your AVI files that you have had problems with, to MPEG-4.

Then take this MPEG-4 file you just created and use Nero Vision to create a DVD-Video disc from this MPEG-4 file. Do you find this resolves your hanging issue?

    Hi Samuelzen,

Sorry, the $0.40 cents Decoding and $0.40 cents Encoding is only for OEMs as they don't just buy one plugin, they buy them in volume. So of course they get a different price. For those who only want to purchase a single plugin the cost is around $25. Sorry for misleading you on the price. I was just trying to explain the OEMs viewpoint.

As for your Camcorder not supporting 5.1, I must have looked at the wrong model on Sony's web site. If it is doing only Analog, then the audio should be LPCM or AC-3 2-channel, which should work with your current build. And no, your recorder can not convert the audio track to 5.1, that is impossible, it has to be done through the software. It could be the capture software that converts it to 5.1, but if your using the NeroVision Software to do the capture, then your only options are LPCM or AC-3 2channel. How are you doing the capture?

Try this, just as a test. Uninstall Nero from your system. Then download NeroVision Express from the Nero website (package #2) and install in Demo mode. And now try and work with the file and see if you still have this issue. This will be a full working version of NVE, though it will not have Dolby 5.1 encoding or decoding support.

    Hi ClaudeMC,

I'll create a bug report for the Overburning issue, and see what our engineers find or say about this issue. If you have not heard any response from me within 3 weeks, as it takes time for them to get to some bugs that are not marked urgent, drop me a line either through this forum, or techsupport4@nero.com.

As for your issues with NVE, it sounds like a Graphics card conflict with our software. What model Graphics card do you have? Do you have the latest drivers for it? Are you using any form of Hardware or software acceleration for it? As a test, do you have another Graphics card that you can place in the system for a few minutes to see if you get different results?

Craig, while your on, any update for the blank DVD disc burning issue after a 'successful' transcode/burn using NVE3 that we were discussing previously?

Also ref 5.1 & Nero. will NE + NVE recognise that a DVD / avi etc has been encoded with 5.1 automatically and where can you locate this option within the programme. I bought an OEM version of reloaded with the seperate pluggin DVD disk, should it be included? DVD Shrink etc backs up in 5.1, thanks...

    Hi KingBones,

I've had a bug entry on this issue for some time, and our Engineers hvae not been able to duplicate this issue, neither has our QA team using the same model recorder. At this point, I think we may need to obtain a sample of one of your source files to see if we can duplicate the issue with that.

I have that NEC Model here in my lab in the US, so I can test it myself. If you would like to send me a sample source video that you have seen this issue with, please contact me directly at techsupport4@nero.com so that we can arrange for you to ship me a disc with some source files.

As for NE and NVE detecting a video file that has 5.1 audio, Nero Express can not, but does not need too.

Nero Vision Express and Nero Recode can. The DVD-Plugin is not the same as the Dolby 5.1 channel plugin.

    Craig,

I have been using AVI's downloaded from a Panasonic GS400 camcorder by using Panasonic's software.

I have had my doubts about this software so I also downloaded from the camcorder using NVE. Interestingly enough the video downloaded without any problem (one or two dropped frames was all), however NVE presented an option something along the lines of "The device has not been tested/calibrated before. Do you want to calibrate?". The calibration process crashed and I was unable to run it at all. Downloading worked. The downloaded avi plays fine in Nero Showtime and using GSPOT.

I redownloaded the video file from the camcorder after wiping windows and doing the full reinstall so none of Panasonics grotty package could interfere with things.

Just playing last night I have also tried different quality settings, 1 and 2 pass encoding and with/without smart encode. Results always the same, hanging or crashing.

Tonight I will try the recode to MPEG 4 and see what happens and post the results in this space for your inspection!!!

Have tried recode to mpeg4 - details below

Thanks very much for your help, as I really want to get NVE working on this. I have looked at some other simple "competing" packages for DVD production with menues and such and still like the way NVE is set up. Just a shame I cant produce a damn thing with it.

    Regards
    Darius

    Craig,

As requested I recoded the AVI's to MPEG4's using Recode. All avi's recoded to MPEG4's without any problem. Didnt matter if they were created by downloading with Panasonic software or NVE.

    However

NVE hung on transcoding all of the MPEG4's to DVD format. For your pleasure (!) here's one of the log files (and yes it looks like its not complete but it is). The computer had to be rebooted to recover so no chance to use NVE's save log file feature.

    @tlowe65 -

    - umpteen occurrences of this message - i think you need Nero's SMC patch (transcoding patch) - " http://ww2.nero.com/us/NVE3_patch.html "

    - can't help you with this part

    - pls EDIT OUT your serial number from the logfile post

    - don't know if your firmware is out of date or not as can't see anything else in the log. Also don't know what media you're using.

(bit of extra info for you here, it may well be worth looking at this once you get burning successfully again - there's a possibility of upgrading the drive very slightly with newer firmware that basically turns the drive into an NEC 1300A. This would allow you to burn to -R discs, but only at 4.0x for DVD-R and 2.0x for DVD-RW discs.

But as your drive stands, it is only presently capable of burning to 4.0x DVD+R and 2.4x DVD+RW discs. Further reading for rainy day can be found here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/216012

@DariusJ - looked thru the log as it was sat there begging. can't find any clues in that incomplete log :(
