Problem New DVD Drive not reading blank disks

I recently bought a SATA DVD-ROM Drive tor replace my existing IDE one (I was using an adapter), but it will only read disks with data on them (Pre-written) but wont recognise blank ones , which is a pain due to wanting to create Windows recovery disks and other such things, anyone have any idea how to fix this

System: MSI B350 Tomahawk, AMD Ryzen 5 1600 @ 3.65GHz, ASUS GTX 1060 6GB, SK Hynix 512Gb M.2, 2TB Seagate HDD
