Normally for me it takes me 17 to 18 minutes to rip the movie to my harddrive with DVDFab.(Newer movies DVD9 discs)

It takes another 5 to 10 minutes to run through VOBBlanker(I think it takes longer when you "blank" more garbage)<Does that make since>

I usually then use Nero Recode 2 to transcode to harddrive which can take anywhere between 20 minutes to 40 minutes useing the same settings Alkohol uses with AA/HQSR

From there burn with Nero, 13 to 14 minutes.

Add them up and you got just about an hour to an hour and 15 minutes of time put in.

If it is taking any longer, I would say check your computer for spyware/virus's and any annoying back ground tasks.

    Strat

I posted the above in the "SILENT HILL" thread at the DVD Shrink forum. DVDFAB Decrypter took "18 minutes" to rip SILENT HILL (US, Region 1), usually it's anywhere from 12 - 18 minutes depending on how big is the movie. In addition, make sure your drive's (burner) DMA is "On or Available" instead of "PIO or OFF" mode. If it's PIO/OFF, then it's likely that you're going to take at least 1 - 2 hrs just for the ripping process.

Yes, fatstrat is right, DVDFAB Decyrpter take 12 - 18 mins to rip. VobBlanker 5 mins to process the VIDEO_TS.IFO file (set your "input folder" and "output folder" differently if you have 2 hard drives, this process faster). Then Nero Recode 2 takes another 35 - 45 mins to transcode, and finally 8 mins for Nero to burn using 8X (high quality media). So as you can see, it's not super fast/easy if you want to have a "perfect/flawless" backup. However, every little steps is needed and it will drift you out of misery.

Overall, to make a long story short (ripping & backing up movies):

    - 18 minutes to rip via DVDFAB Decrypter to hard drive
    - 5 minutes to process via VobBlanker
    - 40 - 45 minutes to transcode using Nero Recode 2
    - 8 minutes to burn using Nero Burning Rom

So within 71 - 76 minutes (1:11 or 1:16 minutes) you'll have a successfully perfect backup to watch and enjoy on your big HDTV. Good luck to all and happy burning.

Thanks Alkohol, you must get tired of posting those guides you have everywhere!
I timed the past two movies I did, and seems like I was imagining things before. Poseidon and Just My Luck took about 10 minutes through DVDFAB and then about 8 minutes through VOB and then about 61 min though Shink and Decrypter to burn.
Any ways I do have a question, When you get finished with VOB and it gives you the "Finished No errors, 0 warnings" (hopefully that is) but it also has the "postcommands changed into precommands in 14PCGs for a total of 14" as per your example above...what does it mean when those numbers are different and the sentance is highlighted in orange? Just curious as to what this means.....
Anyways, thanks for all your help, you have certinaly helped me be somewhat proficient in this backing up process.

I believe the "Postcommands changed into Precommands in 14 PGCs of a total of 14" means that whatever (or how many cells) you'd blank them only. And yes every movie is different due to how many VTS/PGC's Entry you had VobBlanker to BLANK out. Hope this clears things up for you.

Good luck, enjoy VobBlanker and all of your backups now.

**NOTE: Below is just a very basic "mini guide" I wrote for POSEIDON (US, Region 1) for those that are interested or needed helps only.

@newbies or those that needed helps

DVDFAB Decrypter 2.9.8.3 should be able to rip POSEIDON (US, Region 1) into the hard drive easily. Well, if you're the few (like me), who likes to "process, blank or clean" out unwanted junks via VobBlanker, then do as the following and you'll be fine. Good luck and enjoy the "mini guide".

**NOTE: this is once DVDFAB Decrypter 2.9.8.3 has successfully ripped POSEIDON into the hard drive already.

    <><><> STEP 2: processing the VIDEO_TS.IFO through VobBlanker <><><>
    - Why it needs to? Because it can clean/filter out any left over corrupted/structural cells, etc. Furthermore, it can blank out any unwanted junks (i.e. FBI Warnings, Trailers, Extras, etc.) The choice is yours, I can wait 5 minutes and rather have a perfect backup in the end.

    - Again, just the very basic steps to show that POSEIDON is pretty simple to backup that's all.

    Finished. No Errors, 54 Warnings

Sorry to ask you to look through all of this junk but when I seen all these errors starting to pile up I didn't know what to do.

    Is this file any good?

I have been using DVD Decrypter and Shrink for some time now and have never had a problem copying movies until reciently, but this is the first movie that I have had problems coyping with DVD Fab Decrypter.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Once it's done processing through VobBlanker, try to transcode with DVD Shrink as normal to see if it's a success. Do you have any other decrypting engines running in the background while ripping or processing with VobBlanker? The log looks ok, however I have never seen that much of "warnings" before. Out of cursiosity, did you click "PROC.ALL" at the right?

(Out of cursiosity, did you click "PROC.ALL" at the right?) To tell you the truth I don't even remember. I got a little frustrated with it because I couldn't get it to work right, so I went and downloaded the free version of AnyDVD and haven't had a problem since.

But thanks for the reply anyway.

@ThaOne I agree with you so many guides (my compliments to alchol for making it so easy to follow) but un needed infact I never ever have had a problem using this combo for ripping and burning dvd. I start with updating my dvd fab decrypter, rip the disc, open file with dvd shrink i always select main movie, remove soundtracks I don't want, I back up to iso and burn img burn. Done no un needed software on my computer not guides or help needed a total no brainer and it always works. So I don't quite understand the need for vobblanker becuz dvd fab checks for that scenario and shrink organizez your iso for burning.

Yes, it is good and wise to always updates DVDFAB Decrypter whenever there's a new version out -- afterall, it's totally FREE and I strongly deemed that DVDFAB Decrypter is one of the greatest FREE ripper at the moment beside "RipIt4Me". Matter of fact, even the famous AnyDVD (retail) recommend users whom purchased AnyDVD legally to update their version when SlySoft has a new version out.

Why the need for VobBlanker? It's true that it's "not always necessary" you (we) need to process with VobBlanker. However, the answer may varies because few or some movies are giving DVD Shrink and Nero Recode a hard times when it's "transcoding". Therefore, it's wise to post process/run the VIDEO_TS.IFO file through VobBlanker for "security" purpose. Again, even the famous AnyDVD is using FixVTS and the great "RipIt4Me" is using FixVTS to clean/process junks afterward. FixVTS works the same way as VobBlanker. However, with VobBlanker, you have more control over the movie (i.e. you can "blank out, cut/edit" any unwanted scenes, vts, cells like FBI Warnings, Trailers/Previews, Director's comment, Extras, etc.)

Good luck to all andy enjoy the new DVDFAB Decrypter.

So your saying you used DVDFAB Decrypter 3.0.2.0 to rip to your hard drive, but it's giving you error? What does it said?

To make a long story short, do these:

*** before the rip process ***
    - go to your hard drive (C or D or whatever you call)
    - make a folder and a sub VIDEO_TS folder inside that folder
EXAMPLE: if the movie is "SILENT HILL", make a new folder call FAB SILENT HILL and a sub VIDEO_TS folder inside FAB SILENT HILL
    - now open up DVDFAB Decrypter and start to rip
SOURCE: is where the original dvd/movie is locate
TARGET: browse to your hard drive and locate your new created FAB SILENT HILL\VIDEO_TS folder
    - then click on START
    - wait 15 minutes and DVDFAB should be done.

*** before process the VIDEO_TS.IFO file through VobBlanker ***
    - go to your hard drive (C or D or whatever you call)
    - make a new folder and a sub VIDEO_TS folder inside that folder
EXAMPLE: make a folder called BLANKER SILENT HILL and a sub VIDEO_TS folder inside BLANKER SILENT HILL
    - now open up VobBlanker
    - Input Manager: is where your already ripped movies or VIDEO_TS from DVDFAB, so it should be FAB SILENT HILL\VIDEO_TS\DVD\VIDEO_TS\VIDEO_TS.IFO <<=== browse to your hard drive and look for this
    - Output Folder: is your newly created BLANKER SILENT HILL\VIDEO_TS <<=== browse to your hard drive and locate this
    - then click PROC.ALL at the right hand tab/button
    - now click PROCESS!! at the bottom when your ready, remember don't play/touch your computer or browse the net. VobBlanker should be done within 5 minutes.

    ** DVD Shrink process **
    - open up DVD Shrink
    - click OPEN FILES and browse to your hard drive and locate your BLANKER SILENT HILL\VIDEO_TS file
    - and now the rest is history, just continue on with DVD Shrink as usual

For more info on how to use DVDFAB Decrypter, VobBlanker, DVD Shrink and ImgBurn (an all FREE ripping/backing up guide), go here at the very first page http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/334154

    Good luck!!

I've tried to backup tokyo drift using the steps involved (including creating a folder on the HD and a sub video_ts folder) but dvdfab keeps giving me an error about 8 minutes into it saying:

    Task_1 failed! Error-400
    Process failed!

I made sure to turn ANYDVD off (even exited the program completely) and am using DVDFab Decrypter 3.0.2.0 (09/30/2006) from here: http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm

    Any ideas?

Edit - I think its my dvd drive. I tried another dvd drive and it copied fine (and faster). Now its running through vobblanker.

Hello to all im new here and ive been doing backups for awhile now,
I always use clonedvd2 and anydvd, they seem to work just fine for me.
I just open up anydvd and put my movie in and a blank disc in and open up clonedvd2 and thats it, it usually takes only around 30 min depending on how long the movie is.
But every once in awhile i do run across one that i have a little trouble with, and when that happens i just use defab decrypter then when its done i just open up clonedvd2 and search for it where defab put it and it loads it for me . I usually dont edit mine i like it with all the extras but if you dont want the extras then you can use clonedvd2 to take them out .

Glad you've got it all sorted out. Enjoy DVDFAB now.

    @lodebar

Glad everything is working fine for you. Good luck and enjoy all your backups to the fullest.

Just a side note here: to be honest, I've never experiences any dvds/movies that I can not rip and backup using this method. If you're an advanced users, then there's no such thing as "I can't backup this, I can't backup that, etc." In contrast, if you know what you're doing, then there isn't any dvds/movies that can not be ripped -- simple as that.

Like I've said many times before, it's not the programs, it's the users. If they (he/she) doesn't know what they're doing, then regardless of what tools they used, the issues will persist.

    Hi alkohol
If I use DVDFAB Decrypter and just do the main movie should I use VobBlanker still, even if there is no compression?

Is it better to create a ISO file or VIDEO_TS files to backup movies?
    Thanks

Ok.. I am SEVERELY frustrated here..

I did the following to try to get Silent Hill backed up and have had no success:

    DvdFab Decrypter (latest version)
    FixVTS (latest)
    Dvd Shrink (latest)
    ImgBurn (latest)

Everyhing went well until near the end of ImgBurn's process.. the buffers were very irratic.. and I got 2 errors.. sorry, cant remember them.. irregardless.. I followed your tutorial to a "T" and got my 6th coaster.. Blank DVD's are not cheap.. and I am getting QUITE irritated with the entire situation..

I have also tried, AnyDVD trial with Shrink.. FAILED

Other methods as well.. but I can't even remember them now.. I am freaking mad as hell right now.

UPDATE: Also have now tried AnyDVD with CloneDVD2.. says everything is fine.. when I go to play it, whether it be on pc or dvd, it just sits there, saying play.. nothing happens.

    H E L P ! ! !

UPDATE: Tried DVDFAB Decrypter - VobBlanker - DVDSHRINK but I get strange errors in VobBlanker I have attached the log for VobBlanker Below. I sure hope that someone is going to actually read this.. this is my Second Edit to the same message in 2 days.. and no one has said a word. :(

    http://rapidshare.de/files/35913123/VobBlanker_log.txt.html

The above is the link to my log.

    My computer:

    p4 3.0ghz
    1 gig memory
    200gb W.D. Hd1
    300gb Maxtor Hd2
    cdrw/dvdrom drive
    dvdrw/cd drive

There is more to it.. but, that is the basics anyone should need.

I did a backup of Silent Hill yesterday and everything went fine.
I opened up the DVDFab Decrypter and it loaded it up for me then when it said finished i just exited it off and then opened up my CloneDVD2 and searched for it then the clone did the rest .
    Works fine in my player.
I have my DVDFab Decrypter set at its default settings i dont change them. And i didnt take out the extras i like having a exact backup.
Im so sorry to hear about you having trouble,I know when i first started i went through those frustrated times also.
If this doesnt work then i dont know what else to tell you.
Maybe your dics are bad or your burner is going out,Ive had that trouble before.
I know that the burner that came with my pc went bad on me after about 2 years, I would keep getting disc's that wouldnt play and then finally it just went all out.

I would think that maybe the burner was going bad, but what about the strange errors in the VobBlanker.. before it is even burned?

    I am a little confused.

Also, I made a successful backup of Silent Hill using RIPIT4ME with the 1 click option. (THANK GOD!)

HOWEVER, when I tried the same thing with HOSTEL, it said something to the effect of "RIPIT4ME found damaged sectors, possibly dirty disc or scratches. Would you like RI4ME to re-do those sectors?" I say OK, it proceeds, after a few minutes, it pops up with errors.. and says ABORT/RETRY/IGNORE.. I do RETRY.. same thing.. I do ABORT.. something else happens.. then it goes on.. another error..

WHAT THE **** IS GOIN ON????

Honestly, I don't know why you keep on getting errors. Without knowing/seeing the actual errors on my screen, I can't really tell you what to go from there. One of the most common error is there may be another decrypting engine (i.e. AnyDVD, DVD43 or others) running in the background while your ripping via DVDFAB Decrypter and when your "processing" the VIDEO_TS.IFO file through VobBlanker. This will likely trigger some errors down the road when transcoding via DVD Shrink or Nero Recode.

HOSTEL, SILENT HILL, CLICK, TOKYO DRIFT, THE WILD, etc. are just another piece of cake. Same routine, same fake cells, vts, junks, etc., simply process through VobBlanker and the rest is history.

To be honest with you, I have never ever come across any movies/dvds (even new released or old) that I can not rip and backup using this combo (DVDFAB + VobBlanker). I've been using DVDFAB Decrypter since Fengtao first introduced to the public last June 2005 and it has never failed me. The same thing with VobBlanker, I've been using it since last July 2005 and it has never let me down -- so far it has been doing an outstanding job "processing junks and blank unwanted craps."

In addendum to RipIt4Me, it should be able to handle any movies/dvds. yes, even new released. I've used it before a few times, but I've always come back to DVDFAB and have VobBlanker to process and blank out unwanted junks (i.e. FBI Warnings, Trailers, Extras, etc.), this way seems faster that's all.

    Best of luck.

If you have DVDFAB ripped just the main movie, then you don't necessary need VobBlanker. However, if DVD Shrink or Nero Recode still spit out problem, then you can always process the VIDEO_TS.IFO file through VobBlanker again and continue on with Shrink or Recode.

VIDEO_TS or ISO, which one is better? To be honest, it's just a choice of preference that's all. Me, I'm leaning more toward VIDEO_TS just because I prefer Nero to burn all of my backups (VIDEO_TS) simply because Nero "automatically booktyped" all of my DVD+R into DVD-ROM. Whereas DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn (if I want to burn an ISO image), I'll have to "manually" change or "booktype" via DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn in prior to the burning process.

    Good luck and happy burning.
