I bought a new 60g ipod on friday, i had it connected directly to my PC (no hub) and things were working great. later i added an older powered hub and almost immediately smelled something burning...and the ipod stopped working. after a cooldown period, and after I removed the hub, things were working again and i went to bed as things were syncing away. sat morning the pod was not functioning again, i had the battery with lightning bolt symbol (not animated) which mac.com says indicates charging but not enough power to turn on. this didn't change for a few hours, so I took it to the mac store. at the store, they plugged into their usb charger and it turned on immediately and worked fine. they also tried my usb cord which worked too...so I assumed it was a problem with my usb port not supplying enough power and bought a wall plug. I got home and the wall plug doesn’t help things. When I plug it in I see an apple with dark background, then the screen blanks and shows the battery/lightning bolt for a second, then it seems to reset itself, and I see the apple again…and it loops indefinitely. I can’t believe my house power is not enough for the ipod, it works fine for our tvs, 3 computers, dishwasher, etc. I have tried resetting (menu + select) to no avail…any ideas? I don’t want to go back to the store just to have them plug it in w/no problem again.
It has nothing to do with your house power, so we can exclude that from the equation. I believe the reason your iPod will not charge via usb is that your ports are too slow/old (Probably USB 1.1). I suggest you firstly try resetting your iPod, to try and bring it out from this indefinite loop. To reset your iPod, * Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.) * Press and hold the 'Menu' and 'Select' buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds.
I plugged the ipod into the wall and tried the reset (assume "select" is the center button?) and nothing happens, the loop just continues. if i do it when not plugged in nothing happens either, the screen just stays blank...
i should add that the usb ports i tried previously were on my Thinkpad x41. it's <1yr old and supports 2.0, i tried the ports on both sides of the notebook.
When you blug it in via USB, though it doesn't charge properly/at all, is it recognized by your computer/iTunes? If it is, you may be able to restore your iPod back to 'factory state'. To restore your iPod, perform the following steps.. - Open the iPod Software. (By default, it will be in [bold]Program Files ==> iPod ==> Updater[/bold]. - Then, select the iPod Updater showing the most recent date in the filename. - Connect your iPod to ye PC - Once the initialization process is complete, click 'Restore'. - After the restore is complete and the iPod is connected to the computer, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences similar to when you connected your iPod for the first time.
when i plug it into my PC nothing happens. I did the reset then it went to the battery/lightning bolt symbol (not animated ie battery is totally dead) but as we know the port isn't actually charging the battery. w/out some juice itunes won't recognize the ipod so i can't do the factory reset. is there some other reset i can try?
You could try slipping your iPod into disk mode. You usually need to reset before putting your iPod into disk mode, but it can be done without. To put your iPod into disk mode, press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears. The disk mode screen will look like this if you have been sucessful. If you have managed to force your iPod into disk mode, it will mount on your PC. From there, you can restore your iPod back to factory state using the instructions that I provided in my previous post.
no dice. even if it went into disk mode not sure it would help b/c there's no charge to even it to allow time to be attached to the pc. maybe i need to go to the mac store for a reset then go get a new powered USB hub?
i think the battery doesn't hold a charge anymore and its broken because it was overcharged. A similar problem happen to me, i charge my ipod with the usb cable to my comp, it was done charging and i just left it there for a few more hours. After a bit I smelled something burning so i unpluged it thinking the cable was ruined or the iPod itself. It was really my usb ports that were broken. Has something like this happen to anyone else? I'm guessing the usb wire doesn't protect your ipod from overcharging
it did smell...but it was working after that so I thought all was well. anyway i took it to the mac store again and they gave me a new one. now things are working fine and charging over any of my ports.
I leave my iPod charging all night and it doesn't harm anything. The reason it might do as l34merik said is maybe because of a faulty USB cord, but overcharging is not possible.
i got a problem of my ipod video..its just 1 month old.. my ipod won't turn on. i tried to reset, nothing happens.. i thought its out of battery. i tried to connect to the pc via usb 1.1 but to no avail.. its not charging.. tried to use a usb power adapter for charging, still the same thing, it won't charge..nothing appears in the screen. im lost.. any suggestion? before this problem occured.. while using my ipod, it suddenly shut down. i was able to fix it by resetting.. i was able to play for a few hours afterwards and i believe the battery ran out while playing.. then from that time on, i was not able to turn it back on.. i tried resetting, toggling the hold button, tried to charge using usb 1.1 and power adapter, nothing happens.. its just a plain blank screen.. can u help with this?thanks..
