I'm a DBox newbie currently browsing here to see what it's all about and what to buy etc. Been looking at threads saying Starview and Nokia etc, but I want to make sure I'm not missing out any newer/other models they are worth a look. Can I have some honest recommendations on which make/model of box to get. Would appreciate a heads up on where to shop also. Thanks in advance.
Starview and Eurovox are 2 of the newer boxes and are good basic receivers. Dbox is better supported and can be used as a PVR with an internal HD or record to PC and watch playback on either PC or through Dbox to TV again. Better still is the dreambox, this can do all the DBox can but is more powerful and well supported. If the CC's change their encryption or codes the DBox and Dreambox are better placed to cope as they are basically PC's connected to a TV.
I've began eyeing up a Starview. I see a few saying that these are a basic/entry setup... as a newbie, I'm unsure what the differences between a basic setup (Starview?) and an advanced setup (like a Dreambox?). What are the differences between a basic and advanced featured box?
The Starview is like a small Freeview type box for cable that has been modified to unscramble cable. The DBox2 & Dreambox are powered by PowerPC processors and run Linux (neutrino & enigma) so can be programmed for any future types of encryption. Starview is ideal if you don't mind a basic scan & watch box. There are a lot of satisfied users, I have tried the Starview and it is very good.
Sounds like the Dreambox is future proof then? So, can I use a Dreambox as simple as a Starview i.e. Scan and watch?
i need to know this aswell, i am a newb, i don't care about the advanced stuff just want to watch channels for free without having to scan all the time and flashing. thanx
They all need flashing at some point. Yes, if it comes with a UK iomage already installed, otherwise it will have to be flashed which only takes less than 5 minutes.

Just to add to discussion, you can get the Dreamboxs cheap on the famous auction site.......but beware of Fake boxes being sold. Check feedback of seller or buy from an authorised DREAM retailer & flash the box yourself. I've heard the fakes/clones are well put together but why pay similar money for a clone? Do a search on it, you'll get more info on what to look out for.
