newbie in need compression help

I have been downloading video clips for a while and I would like to put them on a dvd... They are in avi and mp? format I am using Power Director

but after it runs thru the program into EZ Producer the file is way to big for the DVD... 4.7 Gb Disks... can anyone help me find a way to compress these videos?
