Newbie trying to Upgrade to XP Pro (XP Home Currently)

    as long as is ddr then is alright. you'll have both usb2 on the pci card & usb1 on the motherboard.

    So as long as the RAM is DDR, it will work?

    Even if I am using DRAM now, I can replace it with SDRAM and it will work?

    You have to be 100% this will work, everyone is telling me this doesn't sound right, but I have to do something here.

    some people call it dram & others call it sdram. as long as is ddr & compatible to your motherboard in speed then shouldn't have no problem. why the geek squad? can't you or a friend do it as is simple to install?

    Well it is 266MHz like the RAM that is on now. (that is the speed right)?

    So for the last time, it is okay to replace my DDR DRAM RAM with DDR SDRAM RAM?

    Yes my friend can install it, he is just telling me I can't replace DRAM RAM with SDRAM RAM.

    Okay since I suck at this stuff I have decided to just leave the 80GB as the master and make the 250GB the slave.

    Since the jumper for the 250GB is broken, putting no jumper on it makes it a slave.

    1. Are there any places I can buy spare jumpers at?

    I'm going to fiddle around and hopefully get my comp to detect the 250GB HDD again.

    I plan on connecting the 250GB to the IDE cord and hoping it works.

    Okay I know I should try to hook the new 250GB HDD up as master and I should try ddp's plan of:

    1. Taking the jumper off of the old 80GB HDD

    2. Put it on the new 250GB HDD as master

    3. Plug the new 250GB HDD onto the master part of the IDE cable and the old 80GB HDD onto the slave part of the IDE cable.

    The major question is:

    What is the easiest way to take a jumper off of a HDD and what tools should I use?

    1 or 2 finger nails is what i use most of the time. the jumper just slides onto the 2 pins so easy to put on or take off.

    I got a partial success.

    First I tried the method you told me (take jumper off 80GB HDD, put it on 250GB HDD as master, and switch the ide cable ends) and sadly the computer didn't detect any HDDs at all.

    Then I hooked it up to what it was before and everything was okay.

    Then I moved the jumper on the 80GB HDD back to primary controller master and hooked the 250GB HDD up with no jumper.

    Right now everything is going fine and both drives are detected (Sadly my 250GB HDD only reads 232GB >.<).

    I do have a major problem here though:

    I am currently dl'ing ps2 games as I have a 400GB PS2 HDD and there is almost no space left on the 80GB HDD. I plan to put PS2 games on the HDD by hooking it up internally to my computer (which means at this point I have to take the 250GB HDD out for this).

    The problem is I have no space for the games on the 80GB HDD and overall I want the 250GB HDD to be the master because:

    1. It will run faster
    2. It has more space which also means it is easier to have 25% free space to work properly
    3. I will have to swap HDD and PS2 HDD less

    Is there anything else I can do here?

    Maybe I should try to hook them up with your method again, maybe something was loose.

    Or maybe the problem lies in the fact that both of these HDDs need a jumper and I only have 1.

    Are jumpers universal or do they only work within certain brands or HDDs? I might buy one to put on the other HDD.

    The reps at Seagate Technical support told me to go buy another jumper from Best Buy because that is what is preventing this setup from working.

    The 250GB will only ever read 232GB, thats how big 250GB drives appear in windows.

    So I recently installed a 4 port USB 2.0 PCI Card with success, I am confident enough with computers that I know I won't break everything!

    But I still have the 1GB of DDR SDRAM to install (and I have to rip out my current 256MB DDR DRAM) and I am nervous to do so.

    How important is having that anti-static strap?

    I have yet to get a replacement jumper for the 250GB slave, I have been working on my Xbox and PS2 as of late with wonderful success!

    Once I get the correct master/slave relation, I might switch out the 80GB HDD for something bigger.
