Go here http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=110374&page=5&pp=25&highlight=toshiba+sdr5372v that's "cdfreaks.com" - it has a thread regarding your Toshiba burner. I read it on page 3, some one mentioned that it does support book type automatically when burning using DVD+R and DVD+R DL media, and there are tons of members had posted the bitsettings pictures and scans from DVD+R into DVD-ROM, so I'm assuming it's capable of changing the book type.

However, I've never owned a Toshiba DVD burner before, only a Toshiba DVD-ROM. I've seen your other "book typing" thread and it looks like you have another Sony burner and you've managed to successfully book type using DVD Decrypter, right? My DRU710A BYX5 can "automatically" book type whenever I use any DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD+R DL via Nero Burning Rom or Nero Express. On the other hand, I'll have to change the book type using "Lite-On" burner tab via DVD Decrypter and so far it has successfully changed to DVD-ROM.

Another thing you can do is try to book type this method via Nero CD-DVD Speed.

(To change the book type or "bitsetting" using Nero CD-DVD Speed)

    01) open up Nero StartSmart
    02) click on Nero Toolkit
    03) click on Nero CD-DVD Speed
    04) click on Extra, Bitsetting
    05) now arrow down and change the New Setting to DVD-ROM
    06) click on Set, then Close. That's it... easy as smoking..!!

This is good... yes, you've successfully changed the book type into DVD-ROM. Now you're free of worries when playing on any of your stand alone dvd players.

To book type your Lite-On burner using the Lite-On Utility, follow the below steps.

NOTE: All credits goes to www.k-probe.com

Here's the actual Lite-On Bit Setting Utility Instructions.

If under or after Book Type, it says "DVD-ROM" then yes... it successfully changed the book type to DVD-ROM.

According to my understanding, the Maxell 8X DVD+R (Made In Japan) is a High Grade media, supposely it's next to the famous Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim. Maxell are high quality media -- it ranks in the first class media along with Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim. On the other hand, the other Maxell(s) that's Made In Taiwan is decent/good media, it's made by Ritek, and Ritek is good, meaning above the average. Go here http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm and have a look around, all the good and crap media are in there.

    Thanks for that alkohol

Another question - What if I burn a DVD -r - will the settings need changing back for fear of spoiling the disk

No.... unfortunately, only DVD+R, DVD+R DL and DVD+RW can book type or bitsetting into a DVD-ROM format. Hope this will give you a clue now. I highly recommend for you to use DVD+R media and book typing them into DVD-ROM -- this is one of the best and safest way to go. It will play in all/any of your stand alone dvd players, it will even play in your Car's dvd player as well.

Honestly, I prefer any DVD+R (especially Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell "made in japan") over any DVD-R because I can "automatically" book type them into DVD-ROM = play in all dvd players = longevity = free of worries.

However, the choice is yours to make/choose.

    Thanks again alkohol

The reason I asked is that when I upgraded my drive from cd rw to a dvd rw dl I bought a batch of dvd -r and would now like to use them up by storing my digital photos on.

I can see the benefits of dvd +r after reading from this excellent website and your obvious expertise on this matter

I recall reading somewhere that if the booktype is set to dvd-rom it would ruin a dvd -r if burned and wondered if I had to change the booktype back to automatic or normal - either through nero or decrypter

This a very good guide alcohol...kudos. The only suggestion I can make is you can cut out the nero burning rom part.....cause in recode it can burn to disc without saving to file. Just choose your burner and once its done...it will automatically burn.:>

If you're talking about trying to book type a DVD-R into DVD-ROM, then yes... it's possible that it'll ruin the disc (or the process will likely to be failed), but then again, you can't book type a DVD-R anyways and it won't do any good. Only DVD+R, DVD+R DL and DVD+RW can book type.

    Thanks again for that alkohol

The dawn is gradually breaking and I can see the light coming on

Checked dvddecrypter and the dvd-rom option has been retained for any dvd +r dl or dvd +r that I burn

I now see what you mean about trying to change the booktype if using dvd -r as it does not appear as an option

    Cheers

If you downloaded the latest Nero 7, you should have "Nero Burning Rom" on it. That sounds kind of strange, but I remembered after I downloaded Nero 7 Demo and during installation, I just put in my key on it and everything/all the applications seems to be in there so far. Perhaps, you may want to "uninstall" Nero (if only you still have the Nero 7 Demo Setup.exe file) and "reinstall" everything back on to see if you'll have everything this time. You may need "Nero's General Clean Tool" to completely wipe out any of Nero's related files/applications, then run the installation setup again. *NOTE: remember "DON'T" install any of "InCD" with your Nero now.

Here is a picture from mine, for reference:
