just found out about newsgroups.pretty cool idea.i was wondering though, i am using grabIt, and my isp newsgroup(cox.net) is seems to work well except the fact it keeps getting interupted and reconnects every 2min if that.the speed it at 200 and change. is it just my server?(wanted to try or free before i spend actuall money on something.)is that what i get for free?

Yeah NEWSGROUPS ROCK!. Free servers always have limited retention and the speeds are normally shite.

I use SABNZBD for my download prog and Astraweb as my news provider. Cant go wrong, costs about £7 per month and well worth it.

I get 6000Kbps on my 50MB line, so basically line speed. Would suggest that you ask you ISP if they slow down USENET traffic before you buy as they may be imposing limits on that type of protocol already.

Even some ISP's limit SSL even though its commonly used for VPN (they know about using newsgroups via SSL)

Luckily as SSL is a time sensitive protocol, it will never be severely limited.

I always recommend usenet to anything else besides making your own. With SSL, no worries but make sure you know if your isp has a download cap as you can go crazy on there.

It wont be suspicious at all. Some ISP's only include 2GB of data which isnt even enough for general web browsing. It was actually on watchdog a few weeks ago about extra bandwitch costing more money, so say that prompted you to call in.

If your with a UK based ISP, let me know which one and which package you are on and I will be able to tell you.

Cox is working with Highwinds, an industry leader in newsgroup management, to:

    * Increase retention by at least 30 days: Retention time for binary newsgroups is being increased from an average of 3 days to at least 30 days. Text groups will have even longer retention.
    * Boost transfer speeds by more than 30%: Each Newsgroup user can utilize up to four connections to the server, and transfer speeds for each connection have been increased from up to 384 Kbps each to up to 512 Kbps each

it's not as suspicious as you think... look at how many multimedia sites are out there... pandora, hulu, netflix on demand, youtube, HD streaming takes alot too. i don't think cox has a cap but i do know they monitor everything you download. i use to hae them and spoke to them about it. i asked if they knew i wouldbe surfing porn and they said yes.

30 day retention rate sucks man... check out some of the other sites out there. giganews, astraweb... you can find a package for about 10 bucks if you look around and get 200+ day retention rates.

astraweb for me. 25 bucks for 180 gigs, with i think either 365 day, or 400 day retention. or you can use the monthly fees, but i dont download enough for that.

are you sure the interruption isn't because of a trial or something w/ grabit maybe? i know i used newsbins pro for my newsreader at first and the trial pauses every so often and i think had a cap. that could be your problem as far ast that goes.

I use usenet its only like $13 a month and unlimited download up to 10 connections, i forget the retention though. I get capped by my isp here timewarner at a little under 10mbps (luckily enough people complained about the usage cap they were about to impose to put an end to that).

i've been using newsleecher with astraweb for over a year now and have had no gripes with either. especially since astraweb is upping their retention rate all the time.

can you tell the difference in speed with more connections?

i don't know if its my internet speed or computer, but with astraweb i am allowed 20 connections i think (can't remember exactly and too lazy to research right now) and it will always download at the same speed overall. if i have 20 connections each connection will dl at a slower rate. if i have 10 connections then it's about twics as fast per connection than when i use 20.

all in all... i download approx. 7.5 gigs in about an hour & 45 minutes whether i use 5, 10 or 20 connections.

    Usenetserver.com

SSL 10-20 connections, three day or monthly rates for unlimited, and will easily max your bandwidth.
