rizzom please don't get the psp you' re wasting your money.
the battery only lasts a few hours at the most and the loading times are ridulaus. my friend just bought one and it isn't what I thought it would be. yeah sur the screen is sweet looking and the graphics are pretty cool but he said that he was half way through a game and the battery went dead so he had to play through the adapter.

ps. my friend lives in japan

well the psp comes out on thursday...2 days from today! THE DS SUCKS! IM TRADING MINE IN TODAY CUZ ALL THE GAMES ARE GARBAGE COMPARED TO THE PSP. I dont evan have doubts for the psp either. I was playing my ds and then all of a sudden the battery went low...and i had just checked it and it said it was fully charged....what a piece of junk. the games for the ds arnt as mature as the psp, gamestop evan said! BUT MY POINT IS THE DS SUCKS AND PSP IS BEST.

I think in the end it will come down to the software rather than the hardware. But at the moment the issue is the price, and in that respect i'd put the ds ahead.

Nintendo already have a huge market in handheld gaming whereas sony have dominated the console market in the last few years. Becuase of the price and current games (mario, rayman and pokemon) i can imagine more mothers and children going in to their local gamestore and buying a DS, (this is a double-edged sword for nintendo as in the past they have been blamed of being too childish- but at the same time they dont want to lose that area). the psp is more of a mature handheld aimed towards the older market. A clear market gap for handhelds. Although i just cant picture a load of 25 year old guys playing it on the train on the way to work. Mature handheld gaming has never been popular for the average mid 20year barr japan!

So all in all i think inatially i think the DS will outperform the PSP sales wise.

Software - This is another close call, Sony have tons of 3rd party support, as well as developing some great games themsleves. Plus the PSP is a more capable system to handle sports games. A huge area that ,i for one, have felt deprived of in the handheld department (Nintendo just dont seem to have an interest). They also have a huge catalogue of games and some classics that are being given a once over for the PSP

Grand theft auto, Pes , Metal gear acid, Tony Hawks and Wipeout to name but a few.

Nintendo on the other hand have, in the pat believed that 1st party support is most important, and personally i think thats why the Gamecube like the N64 came to a pre-mature end in relation to its competitors. Although they have promised more 3rd party support for the Ds and future projects i'm still abit sceptical. They have small catalogue of games thus far and their trump card may just be the inovation of the touch screen:

yoshis touch and go, fps control eg. metroid hunters, kirby ds, warioware, and future projects such as mario kart ds, age of empires 2 and Super mario brothers

But lets face it Sony can pump releases out all week - Nintendo possibly could - but dont!

The bottom line is that both consoles offer something great in different departments. DS vs PsP - who cares? I'll have fun while they fight over it. To anybody indecisive about which one to buy - Get a Ds for fun and a quickfix of gameplay, and if you enjoyed the gameboy advance. Get a Psp if you're alittle more serious about games and enjoy your ps2 and games for it. if you still can't decide... well.. just get both........

Here is some good reading on this topic. http://news.com.com/PSP+no+one-trick+pony/2100-1041_3-5626017.html?tag=st.pop . You will find a link near the bottom of the first page for DS. (Wich isn't even 1 full page). And before the "I told you so" comment comes out. The only reason DS is ahead of sales is because it was on the market long before the PSP. Kind of hard to make money when its not even on the market.

    Enjoy

hmmm, so what if it was released earlier? it's till leading. you're just jealous the PSP is way down there. :p let's see. go to other forums, you'll see that the DS is leading it all the way and they all think that the PSP was just a waste because they just shrunk the PS2. :p

I'm still for the DS though! :p

del, for someone who doesn't really care about the ensuing
battle between the ds and psp, you seem to be rather
    abrasive.

There are a ton of strange comments on here regarding the
superiority of each system (I am broadening my topic to
include Nintendo's and Sony's Consoles). A couple stand out
    in particular:

    1. they can even use the older controllers (Mr. Del referring
to the ps2) - This is not 100% true, there are now games on
the PS2 that REQUIRE the use of the Dualshock2 controller
(the black one) and will not work with the old Dualshock.

    2. What Nintendo can play game and DVDs? (Sorry del you
again) - This relates to my feeling toward the psp, why do you
need to watch movies on a game system? It may be a bonus
feature, but I am somewhat of a purest, to many features can
    kill any system.

    3. Nintendo is in it for the money? I have sent my PS2 away
twice because it stopped reading the discs, I expect the same
thrown together quality from the psp. Sony makes crap and
then expects you to pay obscene amounts of money for it.
Besides, can the psp host multiplayer games from game
cartridge, if nintendo wanted to just make money they would
    not have included this feature.

    4. Why is there this unwritten law that game systems have to
be backwards compatible? I still have all my systems, right
back to my commodor, I understand it's nice to have one
system to play all of them, but what if Sony wanted to use
UMD for the PS3's media? It would have to abandon the
people that have relied on the backwards compatibility.

    5. Nintendo could have built the DS with all the add ons built
in? What other add ons are there? You get all you need for
playing games both independently, wirelessly, and
online...what else do you need? I think it was smarter for them
to not include all the video mp3 crap with it. I am never going
to use those features...why should I HAVE to pay for them?

    6. Now look at those GBDS game titles being thrown
everywhere. How many of those are not N64 ports with slight
improvement? Maybe 3. -- Have you even looked at the psp
listings? aren't 90% of the games coming out direct ps2 ports?
Isn't the reason why people want to purchase this system is
because of these ports (GTA, GT, MGS)? Difference being the
psp versions don't have the slight improvements.

Like I said I am a purest, I look at games for creative
production rather than flashy graphics with a sloppy story and
gameplay. Nintendo has always been 100% original, they push
ideas and they are not scared of the risk. Look at the virtual
boy, totally flopped and they even had thought that it would,
but they still try and that is where sony is lacking. Sony looks
to the familiar, they are very unoriginal in themselves, though
they do have excellent 3rd party companies producing games
for them, but as the rude and self-glorifying Mr.Del made
abundantly clear, these games are most often multiplatform (
does it make feel good to pretend you don't care when
obviously you do more that everyone else on this board?).

The DS is the next step for them, and with two screens the
possibilities for game-makers are endless and with one being
a touch screen it ups the bar for the psp' controls (one
analogue stick?). Sony assumes that consumers are stupid
and will by their unit because it has a big shiny screen and
you can play all your mindless shooters. Games like GTA and
even metal gear are empty hollow games that rely on the
human need to kill and destroy, that is the ONLY draw to
these games. Games from Nintendo do not have to rely on
this for a successful game, they have a thoughtful process
that they follow when they create a game that has all the
same fun/replay values without the need to play lame
shooters. So enjoy your overpriced, GIMMICKY, cheaply
made, feature BURDENED handheld with "amazing" graphics.

BTW I thought I would add this, I am a 22 year old college
student, the thought that the ds is for "7th graders" is
bullocks -- I see it the other way around the immature
gamers need the machismo that comes with the violent
games, where as the mature gamers crave the strategy and
oft times the simplicity of a well rounded, well produced, well
    written game.

wow that was a wiast of typing there dude, besides they vary depending on the type of game you want to play, if you want simple mini games such as worio ware or fell the magic go with the ds, of course there is metroid prim hunters but the psp with hav several shooters to but not as many mini-gmae baised games. It all depends on you want

DALUX I guess its your turn. Your first comment. Some new PS2 games only work with The PS2 controllers. This may be true but guess what, The system can still use the old controllers.

Comment number 2 is a matter of opinion.

Vers 3, Im sorry you had bad luck with your PS2. I have had mine since 3 weeks of release date and it has never crashed yet.

Section 4, Im glad you asked that. PS3 will have blueray DVD wich will be compatabile with PS1 and 2. They are toying woth the idea to include a UMD player. Also like the GBA was suposed to do the PSP will be able to intergrate with the PS3.

Number 5. The upcoming add ons that do not exsist yet. the probaly rumor ones. Who knows. The DS will not work with the upcomming Nintendo console since there isn't one.

Next is 6. 3 out of a hundred and how many is not good.

The BTW part. If thats what rocks your boat then enjoy your furry animals since thats probaly the only fur you will get. Now about the two. If you look at the numbers the PSP is a far better machine. You can not deny it. Better screen, processor, etc.. SONY is even selling the system under cost. Now the games that go with them. Thats up to you what you like. So I guess the games will sell the system and get thier owners. You already know what I like and I know what you like. So enjoy your toy. Why doesnt Nintendo have plans to release a console now. Something to do with SONY an Xbox or the early death of game cube? You will only find out in the Twilite Zone. Imagine if you will.........

It's called typing in correct grammar. You know, fullstops and capital letters which you learned at Kindergarden? "-_- this."
