no more dvd's

I have been looking into HDD media players w/remote control that connect directly to the TV and play just about any media format. I have a lot of avi files and don't want to convert them to dvd (the process is just too long for me), yet I don't want to pay the price for some of the exspensive HDD Players, can I just make my own, where would I start. Any help is appreciated. Is it true that I can use an old xbox to do the job? Please help

Yes, you can use your old XBOX. Softmod it and install XBMC. All the information you need you can find here on Afterdawn. I used this tutorial, easy to follow:
