I managed to get video and audio from .vob files, but only video from the .ts files.

I am using Ubuntu on my desktop. I have a notebook running XP and on that VLC works a treat.

On ubuntu it says "xvideo output", am I missing something obvious?

Actually, I also have a laptop running ubuntu, and VLC runs fine on that too.

I am thinking it is something to do with the audio device on the desktop. It is a media centre with hdmi and optical outputs and I remember when I ran the .vob file I heard no sound until I noticed the option to use the spdif, then the sound came.

With the .ts file there was no such option - so maybe that is the issue. I'll have to hook up some headphones and listen to see if the sound is coming out the default device.
