noob help - change bitrate of video on linux

    hey, im a super noob at this
    I have a video that's 900mb and I was wondering how I could shrink it down to fit on a cd?
    I'm running suse llnux so if anyone could help me out?

    There are xvid codecs for linux, but I am not positive the names of any encoding programs. Sorry, but when it comes to Suse i'm not too familare

    i think mencoder run on linux...
    and xvid for linux.

    any way i would split them into 2 rather than encoding

    i know, but it seems a shame to split up a 800mb movie
