nothing on laptop after startup

i did send one but it hasnt got there for some reason.
when i try to save his data (photo's dvd's)to disc i get message disc needs formatting, which it does then i get another message saying there is an intrnal error and cdfile cannot continue.i have tried dvd and cd discs with same results. also to connect to the internet he use a wireless modem, (t-mobile)but cannot connect i have uninstalled and reinstalled but no joy.also he was thinking of buying an external hard drive for his data,i know its dangerous but would it be possible to install antivirus on that then transfer data.

What do you mean? Can you boot up normally?

So, you want to install an antivirus onto where? The infected computer or an external hard drive? Either way, it would be possible.

Perhaps the best way to save his data is to unplug the infected hard disk from the computer itself, and then plug it into another computer with an antivirus. That way, you can scan the hard disk, and also save the data.
