I suppose i was a bit wrong about NVIDIA because the many reviews that compare 6800's to the X800's shows that the 6800's win by miles adn the drivers are better two.

I think you are mistaking the PSX or PSP for the PS3. The PSX is the one that is out now in Japan with the built in DVR and was pulled for some problems. The PSP is the handheld they expect out in 2005 in the US. They have just started sampling the chips for the PS3, and have not gone on sale in Japan yet. Even the PS3 SDK to create games for it will not be released until maybe as late as Q3 2005 according some articles. The latest news said they would be unveiled at the E3 in 2005, so it will not be out in the US until 2006 more than likely.

Sorry for the offtopic comment, but the info was incorrect.

I agree, I was starting to get a little afraid. We don't those asians hogging all the game market, also if it were already released then pulled back you would think that [bold]all[/bold] the specs of it would have been already available.

The only reason that I chose the ATI card over NVIDIA was because the TV capture on the theatre 200 is supposed to be the best out there right now. It really is fantastic in more ways than one. I can now get my 13 year old son to go to bed at a decent hour even if I love the eighties is on VH-1 or The Cosby Show nick at night marathon is on. I can even use DVD RW to write the shows over and over again. I love being thought of as the smartest dad around.

otester what are you going to be doing with that card? You gonna get H2 or D3? Also there are articles showing that with these newer faster video cards they are more dependant on clock speed. Hardocp did a test that shows to fully get the most out of the 6800 or x800 you need 3.4 P4 or Athlon 64 3500 proc.

I can run far cry at medium settings with my np 9600 and it has no problems with the grass or the water. If I experience any lag I just defrag and that cures it.

The offical Doom 3 benchmarks from Id are out for the latest video cards:

Nvidia beats ATI in nearly every single benchmark in Doom 3, but both give good enough performance to enjoy the game.

Yeah, Ati doesn't do well with OpenGL, but they are better at it, when cat 4.8 drivers come out I think they are supposed to be improving on this, but not sure. I guess we'll se, would be nice..

Just curious, wasnt OpenGL traditionally ATi territory?

i have used old (not that old!!!!!) cards and played on games and the performance is ok but flickers appear in some games (even the old ones)!

Not sure if OpenGL was traditionally ATI territory or not, but even when running psx emulators it says to use the DirctX plugins for ATI cards and to use OpenGL for Nvidia cards, so my guess is that it's been like this for a while. I personally liked Glide when 3dfX cards were at the top, to bad they never improved on it because it was far more better then the other two at the time.

Do you think that if another company apart from ATI and NVIDIA picked up from were 3DFX started they could turn the tide in the Graphics card war? I think a make like Matrox or SiS could do an ok job!

They probably could but Nvidia bought 3dfx for $112mil back in 2000 I think.

Quick question... Seriously thinking about picking up an ATI 9200SE 128mb for $49...I know a real piece of $hit card. Anyway I'm talking DDR 2100 memory 384mb of it, how much of that will I free up with that Video card? (ATI 9200SE)??? I use intergrated graphics now, so it would have to be somekind of improvement I would think. How much would I gain? 32mb-64mb? More less?

You will gain fusk all :) because , for example if i put two PCI cards together (128MB) each , i wont get 256MB because ur monitor only has one VGA cable. Unless one of the cards is a accelerator (i have one , dont use it though , might sell it) then you can add more memory (EG: 32MB AGP with a 20MB accelerator you will get 62Mb graphics card.

fusk SAKE!!!! SAVE TIME + MONEY AND BUY A NORMAL GRAPHICS CARD LIKE 99.9% OF PEOPLE!!!!

You need to cool your jets otester. Did you even read JSRife's post? You're answer has nothing to do with his question.

    JSRife,

You will regain system memory and processing power by moving your graphics to an independent card no matter how pissy otester may think the card is. It's as simple as that.

I can't tell you exactly how much system memory you'll gain but I don't believe it will exactly equal the amount of RAM on the card.

I dont know what cracked out realm you hail from but you gotta go do some reading before you open up on people like that.

If I put two Voodoo2's together, assuming they had 128MB apiece, I would get 256MB because, guess what? 128+128 roughly equals 256.

Every single video processing chip on the planet is an accelerator including both onboard video and the 9200SE

Firstly, 32+20=52 not 62. Secondly, you analogy doesnt work except in very specific circumstances (which have no relevance to this discussion about the 9200SE). There are three ways of interpreting what you've said (both of which lead to incorrect conclusions):

    Interpretation 01
    - "32MB AGP" = 32MB of onboard video memory, "20MB" = 20MB on a video card (only a few old cards, circa-TNT2 had 20MB)
    - If you add a 20MB video card, you disable the 32MB originally slated to the video processing becomes free to do other things so you will save memory

    Interpretation 02
    - "32MB AGP" = 32MB on a video card, "20MB" = 20MB video card
    - This is a moot point: if both are dedicated video cards then you wont really be wasting system memory for video applications now will ya

    Interpretation 03
    - "32MB AGP" = 32MB on a video card, "20MB" = 20MB of onboard video memory
    - Again, by having a video card, you negate the onboard-video memory allocation

    1. Not everyone's a little rich kid like you who's got money to go buy things left and right
    2. Your rant might have a little more oomph if you had the technical points to back it up.
    3. No ALLCAPS :p
