Legendary Sakaguchi Now a Developer for the Next-Generation Xbox Platform!

Father of the “Final Fantasy” Series and AIAS Hall of Fame Inductee will develop Xbox roleplaying games!

February 24, 2005—Microsoft Corporation today announced that Hironobu Sakaguchi, videogame legend and president of Mistwalker game studio, has joined with Microsoft® Game Studios to develop roleplaying games (RPG) exclusively for the next-generation Xbox® video game system.

Sakaguchi is best known as the creator of the Final Fantasy franchise, which has sold more than 60-million units worldwide. He was the executive vice president in charge of game development at Square Enix Co., Ltd., until February 2001.

    Hironobu Sakaguchi

Citing a shared vision with Microsoft for the next generation of video games, Sakaguchi will lead the creation of two upcoming Xbox-exclusive RPGs to be published by Microsoft Game Studios.

“Sakaguchi-san has taken roleplaying games—traditionally a niche market—and introduced them to a broad and diverse audience across the globe,” said Peter Moore, corporate vice president of Worldwide Marketing and Publishing at Microsoft. “We are ecstatic to work with Sakaguchi-san and celebrate what this news means, not only for Xbox, but for gamers worldwide.”

“I’m excited about the two epic game titles we will be developing,” Sakaguchi said. “A number of talented creators have signed on to help develop these games, and I’m confident we will be able to create games that provide gamers with a new kind of thrill.

“Microsoft’s cutting-edge technologies in the next-generation platform will allow me to bring to life an array of ideas that I have had for many years,” Sakaguchi said. “I want these games to be alive with a new vision for gaming and vividly depict new characters that will transcend the game, find a place in the hearts of gamers, and make time spent with my games a fond and long-lasting memory.”

Sakaguchi started his career at Square Co. Ltd. in 1986 as director of planning and development. He was promoted to executive vice president in 1991 and eventually ascended to president of Square LA Inc. (now Square USA Inc.) in 1995. In 2000, Sakaguchi was inducted into the coveted Academy of Interactive Arts & Science (AIAS) Hall of Fame for his groundbreaking work on the Final Fantasy series. In 2004, Sakaguchi announced that he had started his own development studio, called Mistwalker.

Xbox is coming off a blockbuster year as the only video game system to show year-to-year growth in 2004, while competitors declined.* Driven by epic, platform-exclusive content—including Halo® 2 by Microsoft Game Studios, Fable™ by Microsoft Game Studios, Ninja Gaiden® by Tecmo Ltd., and Xbox Live™, the only unified online video game console service—gamers worldwide continue to flock to Xbox for an unparalleled digital entertainment experience.

More Japanese Game Luminaries Pick Next-Gen Xbox Platform

Game Republic’s Yoshiki Okamoto and Q Entertainment’s Tetsuya Mizuguchi will now create exclusive content for Microsoft Game Studios.

March 3, 2005, Tokyo, Japan—In another creative coup for its next-generation Xbox® platform, Microsoft® today announced that esteemed videogame developers Yoshiki Okamoto, president and chief executive officer of Game Republic Inc., and Tetsuya Mizuguchi, creator and co-founder of Q Entertainment Inc. have aligned with Microsoft Game Studios to develop exclusive next-generation Xbox games.

The announcement comes on the heels of last week’s news that videogame legend Hironobu Sakaguchi, president of Mistwalker game studio and creator of the Final Fantasy series, has joined with Microsoft Game Studios to develop roleplaying games exclusively for the next-generation Xbox platform.

For more than 20 years, Okamoto has been thrilling gamers with franchises like Street Fighter and Resident Evil. Widely considered an industry pioneer, Okamoto is best known for his ability to conceive and drive completely new game genres. In July 2003, he founded Game Republic, where he and his team have next-generation Xbox-exclusive titles currently in development.

"My goal in creating these games is to make completely fresh and riveting experiences that gamers have never had before," said Okamoto. "With the next-generation Xbox platform, I can turn this vision into a reality." Mizuguchi, who founded Q Entertainment in 2003, is the creative force behind a litany of innovative blockbusters, including SEGA® Rally Championship, Rez, and Space Channel 5. Gamers worldwide have long been attracted to Mizugchi’s distinctive style that blends music and action.

"By combining various factors, including exciting story lines, action, graphics, and music, I’ve created video games that have brought gamers the ultimate fun in gaming," said Mizuguchi. "Now, I hope to create games that will give gamers the most emotional and thrilling gaming experience possible—joy, thrills, sympathy, and speed. The power and advanced technologies of the next-generation Xbox platform will enable winning games with powerful emotions [and] high-quality graphics and sound."

The addition of Mizuguchi and Okamoto further reveals Microsoft’s strategy for attracting Japanese gamers. Perhaps more importantly, it underscores a growing preference among the world’s most talented game developers for the next-generation Xbox platform. Last week, the company announced that Mistwalker, a studio run by the legendary Hironobu Sakaguchi, will develop two exclusive titles for Microsoft.

"We are excited for Mizuguchi-san and Okamoto-san to develop next-generation Xbox games unlike anything the world has ever seen," said Peter Moore, vice president, Microsoft Corporate Worldwide Marketing and Publishing. "Gamers will be riveted by the experiences enabled by such creators when given the proper canvas and tools."[/quote]

Publisher All-Stars Gravitate to Next Xbox

Gaming heavyweights pledge their support to fuel the HD Era.

April 8, 2005, Redmond, Wash.—Microsoft® Corp. today unveiled its all-star lineup of award-winning publishers committed to making the leap into the HD Era on Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox® platform.

The future Xbox will deliver on the company’s vision of the HD Era—an era fueled by consumer demand for experiences that are always connected, always personalized, and always high-definition—through the amazing clarity of high-definition graphics, extraordinary benefits of constant connectedness, and exceptional personalization abilities.

To help make this a reality, Microsoft has assembled some of the most powerful publishers to drive the industry into the high-definition gaming revolution. Together, these publishers have sold more than half a billion copies of current-generation Xbox console video games worldwide and represent approximately 70 percent of all current-generation console games sold in 2004.*

“The key to bringing the vision for the HD Era of gaming to life is our partners: world-class publishers and developers that have molded and shaped the history of interactive entertainment for tens of millions of gamers worldwide,” said Peter Moore, corporate vice president, Xbox Global Content and Marketing at Microsoft. “This stellar lineup of publishers and developers is poised to deliver gaming experiences our customers only dreamed were possible and is ultimately committed to elevating video games to be the number-one form of entertainment.”

Publishing heavyweights such as 2KGames, Activision Inc., Atari®, Bandai Co. Ltd., Bethesda Softworks LLC, Buena Vista Games Inc., Capcom Co. Ltd., Codemasters Software Company Ltd., Eidos, Electronic Arts Inc., FromSoftware Inc., InterServe International, KOEI Co. Ltd., Konami Digital Entertainment, LucasArts, Majesco Games, Midway Games Inc., Namco Hometek Inc., Phantagram Co. Ltd., Rockstar Games, SCi Games Ltd., SEGA®, Tecmo®, THQ®, TWP Corp., Ubisoft, Vivendi Universal Games, and Webzen Inc. have committed their support for Microsoft’s innovative vision for the future of high-definition gaming.

These premier publishers join Microsoft Game Studios, whose stable of game developers will bring exclusive content to the next-generation Xbox platform. These developers include BioWare, Bizarre Creations Ltd., Bungie Studios, Epic Games Inc., FASA Studio, and Lionhead Studios Ltd., Rare Ltd. as well as newcomers Yoshiki Okamoto’s Game Republic Inc., Hironobu Sakaguchi’s Mistwalker, and Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s Q Entertainment Inc.

The next-generation Xbox titles will provide exhilarating entertainment experiences that will drive the HD Era. Expect technological advancements such as multichannel audio fidelity that will plunge you into a world so realistic, even the faintest enemy footsteps can be heard. These advancements will be fueled by richer online communication and by an abundance of on-demand content delivered by the Xbox Live™ service.

In addition, Microsoft is fully committed to this generation, so you can expect an amazing pipeline of titles into 2007. This year alone, Xbox publishers and developers will deliver more than 200 games to the platform. Since its launch, Xbox has sold 20-million consoles worldwide and is expected to sell millions more.

This unified show of commitment from the leaders of the publishing industry underlines the gaming industry's belief in the Xbox vision of how hardware, software, and services can be fused to power next-generation gaming and entertainment experiences.

Samsung and Microsoft Announce HDTV Alliance for Next-Gen Xbox

April 28, 2005, New York, NY—Samsung Electronics, a global HDTV leader, and Microsoft® today announced an alliance to elevate gaming to the next level through high-definition technology. Microsoft has chosen Samsung as the exclusive HDTV worldwide marketing partner for the next-generation Xbox® high-definition (HD) gaming platform. The announcement was made today during the Home Entertainment Expo at the New York Hilton.

The next-generation Xbox/Samsung HDTV combination is designed to deliver the most advanced and realistic high-definition experience to gamers worldwide. To promote the HD Era, the companies plan to place over 25,000 Samsung high-definition televisions in Microsoft Xbox retail kiosk locations across the globe.

"Gaming has become a primary force for innovation in the entertainment and technology industries. Samsung has selected Microsoft Xbox as the best next-generation game console and a key driver in the global HDTV revolution," said Peter Weedfald, Senior Vice President of Consumer Electronics and North America Corporate Marketing for Samsung Electronics America, Inc. "Samsung is proud to expand the Microsoft relationship and stand with them at the forefront of the HD gaming century."

"Samsung is a natural partner to showcase the richness of the next-generation Xbox," said Peter Moore, Corporate Vice President of Worldwide Marketing and Publishing for Xbox at Microsoft. "Samsung HDTVs will provide Xbox enthusiasts with the truest high-definition gaming experience available."

The alliance is the culmination of a global process begun by Microsoft in October 2004 to find the most advanced and formidable visual display company to join with the next-generation Xbox video game console. A wide variety of visual display screen sizes and technology platforms from Samsung Electronics (LCD, Plasma, Micro Display—DLP, and Slim Fit HDTV CRTs) combined with the incredible new Xbox console will give gamers unprecedented realism and intensity in their gameplay. The new 23" Samsung LCD TV (LNR238W) to be paired at retail with the new Xbox console offers a super-fast 12 millisecond pixel switching speed, which will enable intense action while overcoming any motion artifacts. In addition, the Fixed Pixel Device eliminates scan lines, further ensuring gameplay is smooth and flicker-free. Picture quality combines with advanced audio technology to create an incredible gaming experience. Samsung HDTVs' built-in speakers emulate the most realistic surround sound using SRS Tru-surround XT so the action feels even closer. Game enthusiasts will no doubt appreciate the sharper details, deeper contrast, and rich sound that are standard on a Samsung HDTV.

The global marketing and promotional alliance between Microsoft and Samsung Electronics will drive the HDTV gaming platform as the greatest emotional experience available for gamers around the world. The alliance will include cinema, POS, television, print, online, and various other media efforts.

Samsung Electronics and Microsoft enjoy a long-standing relationship as strategic and tactical business partners. The Microsoft Xbox currently incorporates Samsung technology, and Samsung will continue to be a tech driver for the next-generation Xbox video game console. Microsoft's first high-definition game will incorporate Samsung-branded products as well as instances of Samsung's logo as part of the overall HD gaming experience. This will mark the first time Microsoft incorporates a consumer electronics technology partner with the Xbox console and games.

The companies are involved in other collaborative technology efforts as well. Samsung Smartphones incorporate the Windows Mobile™ platform; Windows Media® Audio and Windows Media Digital Rights Management 10 (Windows Media DRM 10) are integrated with Samsung digital audio players; Samsung's new Portable Media Centers feature Windows Media Audio and Video and DRM 10; and the Microsoft Windows® platform is used across Samsung's global family of notebooks and personal computers.

As a part of their continued relationship, Microsoft and Samsung Electronics are uniting in a nationwide (USA) cause-marketing program entitled "Samsung's Hope For Education." Now in its second year, the program will deliver more than $2 million in much-needed technology and software products, including Encarta® Reference Library 2005, to elementary, middle, and high schools across America through an online essay contest. To answer your question WVengance. Obviously i have heard something at least you havn't.

The 360 has support for 2 memory cards, 3 usb ports, 1 ethernet port, wi-fi(802.11a/b/g), 4 wireless controllers, dvd and a detatchable 2.5" hdd. It has 1 HD screen output which can produce 720i, 720p and 1080i resolutions. (1080 is approx 2000x1000 pixels)
Total formats supported by dvd drive:
    DVD-Video, DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-DA, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, WMA CD, MP3 CD, JPEG Photo CD

The ps3 has 1 original ps memory card slot, 1 sony memory card slot, 1 compact flash card slot, 6 usb ports, 3 ethernet ports, 1 in and 2 out (so that it can function as a hub for a normal network or to connect several ps3's together for combined functions), wi-fi(802.11 b/g), so far up to 7 wireless controllers (they have plans to attempt to make it 8), blu-ray and the detatchable 2.5" hdd. It has 2 HD screen outputs which can produce 720i, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. (p is progressive, which is better than i for those who don't know that).
Total formats suported by blu-ray drive:
PlayStation CD-ROM, PlayStation 2 CD-ROM, CD-DA, CD-DA (ROM), CD-R, CD-RW, SACD, SACD Hybrid (CD layer), SACD HD, DualDisc, DualDisc (audio side), DualDisc (DVD side)
    PlayStation 2 DVD-ROM, PlayStation 3 DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW
    PlayStation 3 BD-ROM, BD-Video, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE

That is just the multimedia specs. I won't post general hardware specs as i fear i cannot fully back up why one is better than the other. But from what we see here, the ps3 DOES in fact have A LOT MORE concrete external options than the xbox. When it comes to live etc, time will tell.

And to you rap4life. Nice articles. For the eagle eyed of you you will notice they are all from xbox.com. What a shocker. There are just as many articles which tell the same story for sony. "Company x goes to sony" "Company y ditches xbox" etc etc. I can find them if i really have to. But you seem to be so full of sources that you must be able to find them yourself.

Also rap4life, ps2 sales were a lot higher than xbox sales in the us aswell, even when xbox was at its "prime". Partially due to the release of the ps2slim.
And i cannot see how you agree so completely with that xbox fanboy (yes he is a true fanboy). Although xbox is "Better" than the ps2. The ps2 had the advantage of more, and (mostly) better games, with a few exceptions like halo etc.

Also, M$ IS losing money on xbox and xbox360, but they don't care cause they got loads of it, they are waiting and hoping they will make some money soon.
Sony i MAKING money, and they have to since their cash reserve doesn't even come close to matching that of M$.

Sorry for the agressive point of view there, but being the ps fan i am i have to defend it as best i can^^. Please inform me if i am wrong on any point as i try not to be.

Actually Sony could very well end up going bankrupt. PS2 acounted for like 38% of Sony's bottom line if memory serves me right as well as they are six trillion yen in debt or around 60 billion usd in debt. They are getting to be as bad as GM and Ford.

Chances are that if PS3 doesn't do as well as PS2 did then they will loose a lot of money while most likely increasing their debt. Why do you think they are attacking xbox 360? They know that PS is their cash cow and M$ has proved that they are a credible threat and the mud throwing by both companies seems to indicate that this round will be dog fight where the consumer will benefit.
