WVengence, I said games were still going to be one-two threads, that implies both the PS3 and Xbox 360. I wasn't using it for either's support, rather that it will come odwn to GPU in the beginning.

eDRAM- Is on a separate die (the "daughter die" as ATI calls it), has a 256GB/s Bandwidth on that die. The bandwidth going to the GPU is ~32GB/s(will be higher because data is compressed across bus). This reiterates very well that the overall system bandwidth claim is indeed very misleading. In essence the eDRAM can only provide the GPU with 32GB/s, not 256GB/s, that rating is on the daughter die between the processing hardware and the eDRAM. Very Very misleading claim to performance for the XBox 360. Don’t get me wrong eDRAM is amazingly useful, but they try to make it out to more than it is.

rootmage, They turned down XDR RAM because they wanted a unified pool of RAM, and 512MB of XDR was expensive, and in essence can only address 256MB under limitations involving 32-bit architecture+ the design behind 3.2GHz. If the Xbox 360 does support 64-bit addressing, then they could have gone for it, but again, the PS3 is going to be more expensive for a lot of reasons, and that's one. XDR RAM eats GDDR3 alive.

Whoever brought up unified pipelines- "The Xbox GPU is able to crunch 240 32bit components in its shader units per clock cycle. Where this is a 51% increase in the number of ops that can be done per cycle (as well as a general increase in precision), we can't expect these 48 pipelines to act like 3 sets of R420 pipelines. All things being equal, this increase (when only looking at ops/cycle) would be only as powerful as a 24 piped R420." -http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2453&p=7 Read the article buddy, it makes sense. Still leaves ATI looking pretty sweet, I like this GPU so far, very innovative.

nVidia is still tight lipped about their GPU. The article has some serious speculation based off speculation of transistor count. Working off of nothing they leave the RSX looking like the G70. Funny, sounds like nay-sayers, at least they admit they have nothing to back it up on, and that nVidia wouldn't give up anything. The theory that nVidia placed the pipelines on another die actually is my best guess even though they call it "farfetched". How else would they get the performance, and doesn't seem logical since ATI is going with a daughter die approach too? ATI is big into bragging at this point, nVidia is going to surprise, I hope (daughter die, use the cell's SPEs...). We just don't know yet.

I doubt it'll be pushed that far back, I'm gonna be pissed, as a matter of fact I already am now, just the thought.

I believe the price, that is, if the specs are true.

Links my friend, you must provide us links.

i wasn't talking about games piracy i was talking about media friendly consoles. i'm more than happy to pay for games/music but why shouldn't i be able to use it on my terms. while both companies will use DRM, it appears the Sony is pushing for it a lot more than MS. MS have openly stated that you will be able to use nonDRM media such as MP3 files in the xbox 360 and want to be mp3 player friendly. it's not clear sony wnats to go in the same direction...

sony is one of the leaders in DRM encoding music cds (essentially meaning you can't rip them to mp3 players), and DRM technology is embedded into the cell by default. they are pushing ahead with this even though there isn't a unified standard and there is no guarantee DRM encoded media will be portable to other equipment as a result (another bluray vs. hddvd debable?). it seems to me their whole policy is geared at ensuring people can only access media in the form of Sony's choice.

PS: the rumors about delay of ps3 until 2007 has to be utter bs

"It isn't clear yet..." is an understatement. Where do you find that Sony's cell is "DRM embedded"? Seriously, it's nonsense without telling us where you at least heard it as a rumor, dang.

Ripping your own audio CDs to HDD and making your own music playlists for in game playing, is a selling point of both systems, watch the sony press conference at E3, and for the 360, just look at their website, or try and find online the MTV showing. If you can't ripped MP3 or wav onto the drive, then it make no, guess what? no sense. You can, it's a feature of both systems. If you can rip an audio CD(hopefully MP3 cds, and maybe, I really hope, data discs, on DVD with all your music on one disc), you can transport whatever music you have on your comp. to your PS3/360. PS3 running linux/windows/OS X any OS? Data disc all the MP3s in that you want. That theory just became junk... DRM...

Reasons: You should really stop saying that such and such won't be done because it makes no sense...

Again, I have to ask... Where did Sony say that you could rip music to a HDD (If you happen to have one), that the PS3 will support custom game soundtracks (while the 360 will support it for all games) or even play MP3's? I watched the Sony conference (3 times over because of the entire Killzone debate) and I really don't remember it being mentioned. Please let me know the times that they talk about it so I can rewatch that area...

Also, considering that Sony just brought out the CD's that allow you to copy 3 times only, then having concerns over their DRM policy is a fairly valid point. Admittedly, I haven't heard anything about them including DRM, but then I also haven't heard anything that supports your claims either, Reason. So again, please let us know where this information is to be found. Otherwise, it is just a theory...

comparative specs on PS3 v Xbox360. note the complete absence of MP3 in the PS3 specs, but it's there plain as day in the 360s. i'm not just making it up

    http://hardware.gamespot.com/Story-ST-x-1985-x-x-x

this isn't to say Sony won't have a change of heart... apparently some of their flash players now handle mp3 because too many users weren't happy with the atrac format.

it is a little confusing with sony on the one hand talking about running open source stuff like linux on their console but at the same time trying to push ahead with a variety of DRM mechanisms. I think sony's music and movie divisions have a lot of sway in the strategy of the company and if the console is to be used as a media center, those divisions might get antsy about it running linux too... all speculation of course, but keep in mind that kutaragi doesn't run sony yet.

    on the PS3s DRM support:

    http://www.compshopper.co.uk/shopper/digital-cameras/news/news/66517

"Despite the announcements, technical details are still rather scarce. More information is expected to be revealed at the International Solid State Circuits Conference in early February 2005. The following points of the specification have been highlighted, however: support for multiple operating systems at the same time, flexible on-chip I/O interfaces, real-time resource management system for real-time apps and [bold]on-chip hardware DRM support[/bold]. It will be built using 90nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology."

Given Sony's track record, I wouldn't be surprised if the PS3 was delayed, but I would be surprised if it was delayed such that the 360 came out more than 12 months before it. The (above $500) figure is pretty gruesome, but very feasible and probably means about £400 here in the UK, hence my PS2's got to last me a few more years yet!

dlm, yeah they support DRM we know. What it will allow and not allow, such as straight MP3s hasn't been specified. But look below, he states "MP3", if protected it would take on another file extension.

18:30 in to the conference about. He mentions MP3 even during gameplay. I watched it once and knew this part was between 15 to 25 minutes in.

There are some moments when it's really fun to be me...

    http://www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000207048052/

Seems like MS might one up Sony on this... Not only can you (possibly) use the PSP but also the DS to play 360 games.

P.S. Thanks for the time reference. I'll check it out.

    1. Rumors

    2. If Microsoft pisses off Sony enough, they can just have a "security" update to the PSP like the ones I have already done three of, to disable communication between the systems. That is unless the Xbox 360 runs windows XP, then it might be more difficult. But, the 360 can be recognized as such, and can still be denied compatibility, if Sony chooses.

Example, Sony wants a Windows OS for PS3. Microsoft says screw you. Sony says screw you and puts out a "security" update. If recognized as Xbox, then display error and shut-down. Very Very simple for Sony to do it, then they just deny deny deny like always. Say you just won't update your PSP. Upcoming online games, require the latest updates.

    3. Rumors, as is the above speculation. Very simple though, dirty yes, but if I worked at Sony I would gladly work on it, if MS won't co op. Idenifying it as the an xbox is the hard part, but can be done.

XBox-360 has the PS3 beat in the proccessor area (for shure).Cell has always been an over-hyped technology and having 7 dsp is NOT a big deal.Ive seen some wannabe techies wronfully claim these are different CORES???WTF are you thinking they dont act like cores or even perform to a fraction of what a core can do!!To put this more clearer they basically are mini(About 1ghz each)helpers for the real SINGLE core.
Guys its not as simple as adding the ghz up and claiming outrageous clock speeds 10+......But the graphics CHIP(not card) on the ps3 is slightly better NOT because of the core mhz(Like many stat hoars think). Its because its based on a newer generation post 7800gtx using the LATEST shading Tech.X360 uses post-x800xt gpu with a tech that SIMULATES shaders but actuall does a good job with.Weaher sony has a better gpu it really isnt a big advantage.STOP CLAIMING CRAP U DONT KNOW
