I have a mini jack to optical cable that I'm trying to use to connect my portable MP3 player to a Denon 2805. I'm plugging it into the optical 1 input, then assiging the optical 1 input to 'VDP' and selecting VDP as my input source. However, I'm getting no sound. Any ideas?

are you sure your mp3 player has optical output? thats pretty uncommon for portable mp3 players. also, there can't just be a cable for 1/8 inch analog to digital optical. there would need to be some type of A/D converter. There are optical cables that have an 1/8" optical connector, but those are for devices that have optical outputs. My guess is thats what you have, but your mp3 player probably doesn't have digital out. Just use an analog 18" stereo to RCA cable.
