my old NEC only does +r +rw.
the 109 is supposed to do all the +'s and -'s but so far it is not adding up to much....
i will pick up some maxell and sony and continue this campaign... ;-)
    thanks for the ongoing support

duh on me. i just did some searching and found out that pioneer is very much in the - camp when it comes to the - vs. + debacle... so it would make sense that they are somewhat partial to the DVD-R discs...

tried burning mpeg file on pc to 109 drive and it did kick up to x5 and x6 on the maxell -r x8.

then i tried encoding and burning as i usualy do and it slowed back down to x2 again on the burn. then the 109 drive would not play the movie that it just burned...
that's it, closed down the clinic and packed up the 109 to send back to newegg. it was probably just bad luck that i got a defective one...also it made a TON of noise compared to my old NEC 1100A and i don't know why - the pio 109 is supposed to be quiet (maybe another sign that something with it was wrong)
anyway, ordered a new NEC 3520 and hope it will be easier...

    Good luck :)

My Asus DRW-1604P has an NEC 3520 chip inside it. It loves Sony SONY08D1 Media DVD-R 8X with burn speeds up to 16X. Not that I am recommending that speed to burn, just stating a fact.

    thanks.
    got the NEC 3520 today.
it works as advertised. burning everything and fast.
put the maxell -r and it burned as fast as 14-15 on the 16 setting. will use lower settings as norm (do i have to?...)
also this nec is very quiet, like my older nec 1100a.
so , i am happy of course.
the pio 109 that i had to return must have been a bum one, it happens.

I think you will like the NEC better anyway since it will booktype dvd+r to dvd-rom if so desired.
