It makes the noise twice, within about 1 second, like the spindle goes up and then down after not finding a disc. If yours has done that since you bought it may just be something common that these drives do. I emailed optorite about it and I'll let you know what they say.

It just worried me a little when it started since it didn't do that when I got it and it just started the other day.

Mmmkay, wanted to give the report:

    The optodisc media is SHIT.

I bought three brands of DVD-R for my Optorite, they are

    1x CompUSA Brand
    4x Sony
    4x Memorex

Thus far, the burning is going great, no TRACK FOLLOWING ERROR s, but, unable to read DVD data discs in my Dell 8500 ... allegedly it is supposed to read at least dvd-r, if not all of them, but it just hangs when the disc is inserted.

I might be screwing it up myself, but am unsure.. i tried a UDF (which doesn't give you the option i don't think in nero to finalize), i have not written a finalized DVD-R ISO yet, that'll be next.. It'd be GREAT if I could burn something that was readable in this notebook, but I might have a problem with this Samsung (SN324-B fw: U102). Being new at this, and discs being expensive (TWO DOLLARS APIECE?! LOL), any recommendations of compatibility with other drives would be welcome, not to mention saving me up to and including eight dollars.

Good luck y'all.. learn from my mistake, OPTODISC blows.

My burner wouldn't even recognize Sony DVD-R, let alone burn it.

    Whoops. Check That.

Two Memorex were good. CompUSA was good.

    Sony not recognized.

I'm sorry, but what the fusk is the problem here? I figured by this point in the game, i wouldn't have to go through the same shit i did with CDR.

Heaven forbid that these manufacturers make products that actually WORK.

    *sigh*

    Sorry for the misprint.

    >>there's your recommended media.
    Yup, 3 DVD-R, 2 -RW and 6 DVD+R, 7 +RW. Hmmm, I wonder why they recommend so few DVD-R/W media.....

pked, please see my previous comments on past pages (7 and 8 I believe). Do yourself a favor and return your Optorite for a full refund. Buy a Pioneer 105 or 106 (if you really need DVD+R support) and never worry about media or compatability problems again. Peace inside.

I was in my local shop the other day and their selling the Optorite for £99 and the pioner 106(OEM) for £99 . Gonna buy the pioneer to replace my Porblematic Sony Dru510. Just for info , the cheapest I've seen them on the net is about £130

heh, i own one and have had nothing but problems.

i just bought the $35 dvd player from circuit city that plays all sorts of media, and although the DVDs i burn are recognized, they are unplayable. I wonder if any of this has to do with the version of nero i'm running (5.5) and if the upg (little help? :)) to 6 will help or not.

right now i'm just leery of buying ANY more crap for this, it's been an abomination thus far.

the Memorex DVD+R and +RW will burn, but again, no read in the Dell Samsung 324B. Joy.

as far as i know nero 5.5 will not run a dvd burner nero 6 does without a problem (54 burns)
on a optorite. media, ive never looked at the list of approved media. used fuji +rw,fuji+r,
memorex+r, tdk+r, memorex-r,. i cant understand why so many people have such problems with this drive. only thing that ive found that wont play them is apex1200 (all other apexes play them) and old ps2.

Can anyone direct me to a good place for newbie info?

I've got nero6 now (2 days left on trial) and some blanks that the Opto recognizes... put in a Twilight Zone DVD to copy, and it gives me the copy protection garbage.

I'm looking for a couple things:

1.) Copy protected discs, how to handle them
2.) Dual layer: Best way to rip and compress to 1 single layer (removing all the junk?) eg. DVD2ONE i've read a little about.. worth the investment?
3.) Any more general newbie information on formats, decrypting, etc.

    cheers.

    A few ideas for you
    1) Use DVD dycrypter to remove copy protection.
    2) Use DVD shrink version3 to shrink dvd to under 4.7gb this is free an an excellant program and easy to use.

You can find both for download on this site and you will also find guides how to use good luck

I just ordered my optorite (203 model) from accupc.com 2 days ago and all I can say is WOW!...they got it to me in 2 days! for only $108.50 delivered! (yes shipping included!)

Has anyone used this drive with windows ME? If so any problems/solutions I should know about?

From what I have read (and glad I did) I won't be flashing it unless I have problems and then NOT to version 2.17

I have some BEALL media on its way from Rima.com and I am impressed with the price and the speed at which they ship, now its up to ups to get it here.

I read on this site that BEALL is good media and that it is touted on the rima site as being perfect for "picky" drives...we'll see...

Has anyone on this site put together a DVD on how to author a DVD from start to finish with no tech jargon and easy for the newbie to understand? If not...why not? someone could make a killing on this. I for one would buy it.

Prepare yourselves for my "onslought" of questions, after the drive is installed :D

    Follow up:

FINALLY got a DVD to burn, and play. LORD HAVE MERCY!

Took movie (which was dual layer 7 some odd gig) and DVD-Decrypted it into VOBs

Re-Mastered with Nero Author (picked only voice track 1 and no special features)

Burnt with Nero 6. Memorex DVD-R.

Played in AMW cheap ass DVD player from Circ City ($35 bucks! yes, for the drive) and viola.

Movie, great quality, pain in the ass tho... Really wish that some of these ripping programs would tell you if they have errors reading the disc, not just assume that the read is correct. Some of the other stuff I've ripped is >chop< >chop< >chop< >chop< >chop< in the audio track, which sucks.

but, i burned a movie, so step 1 is complete.

    cheers

actech Nero 5 does indeed support DVD burning, you just need to update it the current version. I started using it back in June when I got my DD2030. BTW, the Maxwell 4x DVD+RW's didn't work for me, made 3 costers with them.

Maxwell 4x DVD+RW works fine for me. It is one of the recommended media on the Optorite site. Have you tried other +RW media that do work?
