Hey Imadern & Yaktown, I've had that same problem ever since I flashed my firmware to 2.17 last Thursday. I've sent them two emails as well and have not gotten any responses either. Have they contacted you guys about it yet?

My Optorite drive will not burn -R media now. I have been wondering if going back to one of the older firmware would make a difference but am very reluctant to do so because it may stop working altogether. Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do about it? When I try to use -R media I keep getting an error message, no matter what software I am using.

Since writing this I have put the 2.16 firmware in the machine but it still will not burn -R media. I have tried two or three with no success. I still get the error messages._X_X_X_X_X_[small]So much to learn and only one lifetime.[/small]

My burner is brand new (4 days old) so i have played with all the firmware. Flashed up and down between 2.15, 2.16 and (gulp) 2.17. The only issue I had was moving from 2.17 back to 2.16. It failed to comlete the flash. It will happily go back to 2.15 though. Note: I did this with the knowledge that if I ended up with a paperweight I could put on my ignorant face and return it for an exchange or refund.

It errored out trying to burn -R media with a power calibration error - but happily burned to a different brand of -R media. It now happily burns -R, -RW, +RW and CD-R. Oddly it will not burn to the supplied +R media.

Yep, I had this problem of the system rebooting when a disk was inserted. I am running XP and did a repair with The XP disk in the drive. Everything was fine, then came up with an ASMS error. Had to put CD-RW as Master disc and disconnect Optorite. It was then able to repair successfully. I put Optorite back as master and CD-RW as slave and upgraded to 216 and not had any problems since.

thanx for the ideas i'll give that a try. i am glad to see i'm not the only one with this issue. james61 you said to set the cd/rw as master does it matter about a dvd rom drive i do have it and the burner on seperate ide cables. i had thought about removing other drives since they are not needed, but i also thought if i leave the cd/rw in for music that is less work/wear/tear on the dvd r/w seems logical am i correct in this thinking kurt

I am using the Optorite DVD burner with Nero 6.0.0.15 and DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 5 - firmware version 2.16

I tried burning DVD Video, DVD UDF/ISO and DVD UDF 1.02 as suggested on a number of forums, on Ritek G03 DVD-R media.

The burn is successful and even plays back well on the Optorite. However, it is NOT playing back on ANY other DVD drive on my PC, laptop or standalone DVD player (all of which as known to play DVD-R)

    Any suggestions?

That's weird that you are having that problem. I have a new DD0203 and I burn using Nero 6, Record Now Max 4.5, and even Dvd Decrypter with now compatibility problems. I use Ritek G03's and Princo's and both work in my standalones and my PC dvd drive. The only thing I can suggest is trying a different media. The cheap Princo's seem to be the most compatible with all the standalones that I/and friends have. They aren't as reliable as the Ritek's(meaning I burn more coasters on the Princo's) but they are the most compatible.

    Good luck.

    Hi Menaceboy,

I don't know anything about the USB version, perhaps you may need to just unplug it! I've not used that type. As far as repair goes, yes just use the XP repair function. I've not had a crash since I repaired.

    Hi Actech,

Hmmm, the reason I stated a CD drive as oppose to a DVD drive, is that a friend had a similar problem, but could not get over the ASAM problem with a DVD of any kind installed. Once repaired, you can put all your drives back to where they were. Hope this helps, Jim.

does anyone reccomend using the optorite for backing up PS2 games and DVDs? I hear that the 2.17 firmware upgrade turns the drive into an expensive paperweight. For the price, I dont think I can pass up this drive. What burning programs work 100%, assuming decent media?

Well I finally got a reply from Optorite on the whole 2.17 issues and I thought I would share with the all the forums who have been talking about it for the last month -

    Hi Tom,

2.17 is meant to be for a different DVD-RW drive, and it was uploaded to the website by mistake. By updating to 2.17, it shouldn't have severe effect to your DD0203 drive. You should still be able to operate DD0203, but we strongly recommend flashing it back to 2.16. If there is no longer power going to the drive, or the drive is no longer recognized by BIOS or Windows, it is likely caused by error from the update program, but not the firmware file itself. In that case, please contact your vendor for a replacement drive.

    Best regards,
    George Chang
    OptoRite, Inc.

It doesn't solve anything and most of this we figured out ourselves but I just want to pass on what I received.

I just ordered one of these drives. What version of firmware do these drives ship out with. Do they need to be flashed? Or is this just preference? What is the success rate of the flashes? Do they work good or do some ruin the drives? I know not to get 2.17. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Overall this sounds like a good drive. Just don't use cheap crap media. Use good media. I hope so anyhow.

I've had this drive for about a month and I'm very happy with it. It came with firmware 2.06 and I've reflashed to 2.16

    2.4x Burns on HP DVD+RW
    4x Burns on Ritek G04 DVD-R
    2x Burns on Ritek G03 DVD-R
24x HD-Burns on Fuji Film CDR

    Not one coaster yet!
