I am going to try another board - an Epox, and see if it has good stability and options with the 2800 and a mobile.

Hey molks, yes i was the one who wanted to get to 3.0 Ghz just on air cooling. It was around 30 degrees when i wanted to try it, but a few hours later it DROPPED to about 6 or 7 degrees with a stong wind. I placed my computer towards my window with the side open and got into bios to overclock it. I did and when i booted up it worked. I had opened my back door and my window. I turned our garage into my room so i have the back door. Anyway, i opened the two and it FROZE in my room. I looked in bios and the temp was like in the 80s. The computer ran for about 10 minutes then it decided to lock up. (FSB 200 x 15)

Wow!!!! thats the spirit man when you said mid 80´s you mean celcius right?.

i have a video of the guys from www.tomshardware.com the same guys that overclock a p4 2.6 to 5ghz with liquid nitrogen. they put an xp 2400+ to 3ghz with nitrogen!!

but you should be in the records man

No, degrees. Think about it. the wind, with a temp of 6-7 degrees is blowing inside of my computer, with the panel open, window open and door open. That's very cool though. I'd love liquid nitrogen, but you just cant get that stuff at the store lol.

Damn thats too bad about the system hanging.. what is the effective speed of a barton fired up like that?

That is one hell of a way to overclock man.. I can just picture it.. trying to squeeze extra FPS for playing DOOM3 wearing mountineering gear, with an ice pick ready to chink that ice off the monitor - mum cracking open the utility door with hot soup.

Hell if it were that cold here I might have a go too..

I've been reading this thread for a few hours and decided to get involved! I have just upgraded to the 2800+ and have been playing with OCing, I currently have the specs in my signature, which seems to be the most stable for me. My expirience with the 2800+ is that if I go above 185 FSB it starts getting unstable (crashes Prime95 in <10 min). I also run in the 52-55C range but I'm going to get some new thermal grease tomarrow because I'm convinced I can get that lower. I have a Thermaltake DragonOrb (~6800 rpm), and its loud but works great, thats why I know I should be at lower temps. I see some of you down in the 30-40 range!!

I've had it up to like 190 FSB and could boot to windows but crashes Prime95 right away and I got a blue screen once too. It also gets above 60 C as well which I don't like. 185 FSB seems to run OK but crashes Prime95 too soon, so 180 is where I'm at right now.

Another thing, with my Gigabyte Mobo I do not have the option to change the Vcore which is why it is so low (as reported by MBM5). I'm sure this is affecting me somehow, like that I can't really go much above 190 FSB because it won't boot.

Anyways, I'll let you know my results with the thermal grease and future tinkering, this thread has been very informative.

hi welcome to this thread technow! first your mobo has the nfprce 2 400 chipset that is the most overclocking frendly chipset (better than via in that matter). what i dont like about it is that doesn`t support ddr 400 that suck! (that can be one of the reasons of the inestability in your ocking).
ok first i wanna know more about your system:

1-your cpu is it a mobile xp 2800?
because xp 2800+ bartons have a 1.6 vcore stock!,mobiles runs on lower vcore!.
2-what cooling fan are you using?
3-your memory speed pc-2100(266mhz),pc-2700(333mhz) or else?
let me know and then we will get the max out of your cpu.

It should be normal XP 2800+, I just ordered it from Newegg.com. The 1.48 Vcore I got was in a report from MBM5. I have a Thermaltake DragonOrb (~6500 rpm), and for memory I have 2x256 PC3200 Dual Channel and 1 256 PC2700 Single Channel (could be Dual too I guess). I'm at 180 FSB and like 360 MHz for memory right now. Here is the report from MBM5. What do you think?

I would have gone with PC3200 for my memory. That helps Overclocking out too. If possible, set your ram to dual channel mode. In bios, you can set your fsb to match the speed of the memory, which would be 400(when or if you get pc 3200) since the 2800 stock is at 333. If you have a regular 2800, it should have a vcore of 1.6, unless it isnt a normal 2800. If it is though, bump the vcore between 1.6 and 1.7. It may get a little hot. I would always make sure everything stays cool when overclocking though.

kalunjoku: I can't adjust the Vcore with my motherboard.

    -----

I put on the new thermal grease and it made a difference of about 5 C (10 F), so I am running in the 48-53 C range instead of 50-57 C. Although I think my next purchace will be a new CPU sink/fan combo with a copper base instead of the one I have with an aluminum base... I guess that will be the next level of cool.

I am tempted to push it faster but I think for now I should hold off and enjoy the longer life of my cooler CPU...

Hey guys, it's been a long time since I've posted. I forgot, my name is [bold]Aceprowler[/bold] but can't get that many letters in.

Anyhow, still have the same cpu, 2800 Barton. Running fine still oc'd to 3200 Barton, @ 400fsb.

I've found a error for you [bold]TechKnow[/bold] that no one caught. But here you have
Well, in order for any board to run dual, you have to have 2 of the same mem chips. Thus you have 2x256 PC3200. As do I, then you ruin the dual by placing that slow PC2700 in your 3rd memory bank. Fasing out your dual channel. Even putting in another PC3200 would knock out Dual DDR. So waisting your money. Thus [bold]DUAL[/bold]= 2

On my board, the 2nd and 3rd bank run dual channel. As with yours, it should be simular, and color coded.

Another thing, I was on newegg, and everywhere else looking up new chip sets. Looking into getting either 2x512 Dual PC3200, or moving into a faster board. But figured I should sell this board first. So any offers, pm me. New egg has 3200 Barton @ 180, NF7 @ 95, plus mem.

Slot 1 and 3 are the dual Channel config on my motherboard, and as Dr XP pointed out my nForce2 chipset doesn't truly support DDR 400 (although it tells you in the manual how to "enable" support for 400 memory by using a frequency multiplyer). Actually I am only overclocking the 2700 chip and the other 2 are still underclocked as you were saying, plus my overall RAS/CAS timing is slowed down a notch, but that is all I would gain from the 3rd 3200 chip in there.

Also, are you sure about the DUAL meaning only 2, because I don't see why it would? I have a memory test util that runs off of a floppy and reports bus mode, bandwitth, etc, and it reports 'Dual Channel' with all 3 in there, plus it seems like that would defeat the purpose of having 3 slots if you had to take a performace hit just because you want to add memory...

Hey if you are looking for some good memory, I just bought my two 3200's from an Enet.com and they sell resonably priced memory (dual chip) kits and they include free aluminum heat spreaders and free shippping! I had mine in 2 days! Your 2x512's are only $136, and they are guaranteed stable and compatible not el cheapo. Check em out:

Yeah, I see what you are saying. But if you read into your manual, or online. You might see what I am talking about. As far as nforce2 boards not supporting 400fsb. Mine is doing fine with it.

That is the cheapest I've seen 2x512, thanks. Kick ass. I payed that for my 2x512 bout 6 months ago. So anyone looking for 2x512 let me know. Thanks.

    On AIDA32, this is my read speed - Abit NF7-S v2.0 nForce2-U400 2879 MB/s, the write speed is - Abit NF7-S v2.0 nForce2-U400 1147 MB/s. Not shabby..

I play Battlefield 1942 Forgotten Hope a lot. 512 of memory just drags at starts. I just know 1gig would be like having a new computer.

I found these articles nice to the knowledge..

hello guys thread is getting better everyday!!!
technow! look about your memory having a third 2700(slower than the other two) is again basic overclocking rules!! jejeje that is slowing down your system.

about mbm5 and other similar aplications is not 100% accurate always trust your bios hardware monitor screen!.

about the third mem bank to run 3 sticks in dual mode the third one should be the addition of the other two if you have 256x2 then the other one gotta be one 512mb stick to run in dual channel (depending the mobo).
and kolanjocu is right since the xp barton is 333mhz it underclock 400 ddr (that`s why im getting the 3200+ which is 400fsb) my advice is either get the 512 dimn or get rid of the 2700 for now.
    aceprowl welcome back.
you said you can change your vcore in your mobo are you sure because that a feature of the nforce 2 chipset?

Well, xp, if you where talking to me, yes. This board you can adjust vcore, basically whatever you want to adjust, it's in the bios.

Yes, with my board, you have 2 standard setting, 2800, @ 166fsb = 333fsb. Or 3200 @ 200fsb = 400, and a 3rd setting for user settings, where you can adjust the multiplier.

    http://www.logan.eclipse.co.uk/abit_nf7_(s)_v2_0.htm

This site would give you a good understanding of my board. NF7(S)V2.0.

I have a 450 watt power supply as well. And I stand corrected. Looking into what Dr.xp indicated. Using 2x256 in slots 1&2 and a 512 in slot 3. Would still produce dual channel. So Yes, (Dual) does not = 2.. LOL. Wow, Now I will just look into getting a stick of 512. Learning, learning learning.

Yea I have looked for it several times but I can't find it anywhere, unless it were by jumper, I haven't looked on the board yet, but it makes no mention of it in the manual...

I think I'm going to get the Zalman CNPS7000A-CU CPU Cooler, it seems to be the best tradeoff of cooling vs noise vs cost. Thanks for the cooler links Dr. XP
