    With what is coming out, no. I really didn't see that much of a improvement, you figure 33mhz mem, 2,000 mhz speed. The only diffence I have notice is my benchmarks. Gameplay is the about the same. I'd wait, just like I am.

    magna 500w psu
    sb audigy {9400}
    i have been recently considering overclocking my xp2800 to a xp3200 so i have been reading up on overclocking cos i wanna make sure i get this right .now i know i have to drop my multiplier down to 11 and up my cpu fsb to 200 mhz from its present 166mhz my question is about the memory at the moment my bios settings say
    system performance {user defined}
    cpu interface {optimal}
    memory frequency {100%}
    resulting frequency {166mhz}
    memory timings {user defined}
    latency times are 2.3.2.6T
    Does this mean that when i change my cpu fsb to 200 mhz that the memory will automatically sync with the cpu or do i have to physically change the memory fsb to 200mhz,if so what do i set the memory frequency to, and as i shouldnt have to increase the vcore will there be any significant temp increase .
    one other thing my vcore is set at 1.65v the stock for this chip but it never gets below 1.69v and gets to 1.712v in asus probe and in bios is this a problem cos i have read of other people using this board that have the same problem and would this also mean that if i ran my multi at 11.5 to give me 2.3ghz that i wouldnt have to increase my vcore any higher
    thx in advance to anyone who can help
    p.s what is fsb spread spectrum?

    hello swampsneak welcome to the forums:
    ok first let get to know your hardware to see what is capable of.
    1-2800 xp barton: 2083 mhz clockspeed,fsb:333 mhz(internal fsb 166 mhz), multiplier 12.5x(if your cpu is barton not mobile the multplier is lock you wont be able to change it), vcore 1.65volt( amd do not recommend you exceed the 1.85volts).

    2-a7n8x-e: great mobo! very overclocking friendly.

    3-cpu cooler: very important hardware in overclocking yours is not rank as a good fan for overclocking,copper hsf a better coolers!!

    4-ddr mem: you have a really good mem stick which is very important for stability (fsb/ddr ratio that should be 1:1) ex. if you use 200 mhz it will be the same for your memory since you have pc3200(ddr400 200x2) when running dual channel. try to use tight timmings just change the 6t for 5: 2-2-2-5t.

    5- your bios: when you overclock you can do it by increasing the fsb 166mhz-200mhz (try 1 mhz at a time). and higher fsb will need extra power (vcore) to cope with the higher clock cicles (speed). keep in mind that when you increase the vcore cpu produce more heat so you need extra cooling (case fans,silver thermal grease and better heatsink fan than the one you have). try in small increments like 1.65,1.7,1.725,1.77 etc.. amd dont recomend you pass the 1.85 volt (burn chip void warranty) anyway with today board is almost impossible to burn a chip the mobo lock before burning.

    *xp 2800+ barton is lock core no multiplier changing. mobiles athlon you can since they dont use the barton core*

    *and you need to monitor your temps from time to time get the latest ver. of asusprobe from asus.com. and always trust your bios which is more accurate than anything* athlon die temp is 85 celcius.

    about fsb spread spectrum is recommend disable when overc. but read this...

    hope i help

    hi dr xp
    thx for the speedy reply yes the cpu is a barton therefore the multi is locked above 12.5 .i'm not looking for an aggresive o/c just want a little more proceessing power before bf2 comes out, and i would like to get the full potential from my memory which i'm not really gonna get running at 166mhz i know the HAC-V81 hsf isn't the greatest but from all the reviews i have read on it, it is ok for mild overclocking which is all i want, altho the heatsink itself is aliuminim it does have a copper plug which runs all the way thru the core to make contact with the fins ,and the 80mm fan has adjustable speed control ranging from 2500 rpm to 4800 rpm according to specs but when i turn mine up it runs at 5150 rpm {in bios aswell as asus probe}.and as i was hopin to just drop the multi to 11 and up the fsb to 200mhz which would mean i wouldnt have to increase the vcore as the xp3200 and xp2800 run at the same voltage 1.65v therefore there shouldnt be any significant increase in temps
    current temps are 35c-36c idle 39c-40c full load depending on ambient room temp, what do you think ?
    and as to my original querie will the memory automatically sync with my cpu when i increase the cpu fsb to 200mhz

    hello swampsnake.

    about memory theres something call ddr/fsb ratio which you set 1:1 the thing is with the cpu we have (2800+) has a 333 mhz which means that your memory will only run in dual channel at 333 mhz (166x2). this is something i found out some time ago if you want to see memory running at 400 mhz (2x200) can be done with the 3200+ which runs at 400 mhz fsb (internal bus 200 mhz).
    of course if you set your fsb to 200mhz and ddr/fsb ratio 1:1 (equal speed between fsb and ddr) your pc-3200 memory will run at 400 but a high fsb such as 200 mhz is not a mild overclock!! and you`ll need higher vcore values.

    i have try a lot of settings with my 2800+ my personal xperience (every overclocker has to xperiment try and try until you get where you wanna go). is that the barton core is not to easy and estable to overclock thats why old xp as 1800+,2000+ and the 2400+ runs with througbred core, 2500+ (which run with barton) are the best for xtreme overclocking.

    my own xperience is that 2800+ mild overclocking 2.2ghz work better (170,175 or even 180mhz) i have mine running at 2.37ghz but to be honest i dont see the improvement in performance (my experience!)

    final go for mild overclocking your fan can handle it if possible try to get some artic silver 5 thermal grease that can cut 5-7 degrees (i use it and it works!!) with your same fan and you`ll be ok if possible get a few case fans!
    let me know!!

    hi again
    and again thumbs up on the quick reply
    i think we may have got our wires crossed so to speak lol. as i said, yes the chip is a barton but only the multiplier values ABOVE 12.5 are locked all the values below 12.5 are still available so by dropping the multi to 11 and upping the fsb to 200mz i will still have my dual channel memory and i wont have to increase the vcore

    ok let me see..
    if you set your mult below 12.5 your pc boot and get in to wondows.

    i ask you this because in my mobo a7n8x-e deluxe in the bios you can change the multiplier (as function of the mobo and chipset)
    but when i boot my cpu since is lock i get the black screen and bios reset itself!!

    some other thing how old is your 2800+ i belive amd bartons made after 3er quater of 2003 are not lock amd lock bartons after that maybe thats your case (if your cpu boots after changing the mult). lucky you

    if so yes you can lower your mult an with the same or little variation on vcore you can get it to run.

    do it like that try and try until you get the stable settings for your system.
    remember to watch the temps!

    some other thing for the forum screens your system description go to your account on forums page and fill the fields for signature with your system info and settings so everytime you post dont have to write it again. p.s: if you have a reason for not use the signature discard this recommendation)

    just a question... wat program are u guyz using to OC? im just wondering because im trying to overclock alot of my stuff on my other computer which is an AMD 1800+ and im using Sandra 2005 Pro but some error keeps coming up, thus not alowing me to OC anything. Any ideas why this would be happening??
    PS. I asked this question awhile back but it was not clearly answered :(

    Thanks alot in advance!

    HELLO BMX you mean what program we use to overclock??

    well most of us including myself use the motherboard bios to do so! either by increasing the cpu fsb, or increasing the vcore or multiplier depending on the cpu..
    the athlon 1800+ througbred core is really overclockeable theres people how oc to 2400+.

    but let us know more about that system like memory,cpu fan etc.. to help you

    let me know

    Does Sandra 2005 even let you overclock?

    Swamp, i believe there is a new revision for the Asus motherboards (came out last year). It's 1009. that may be because i have an A7N8X-X but yours may almost be the same bios. I may be wrong though

    hi dr xp, kalunjoku and any one else reading this
    well mate looks like you were right i tried dropping the multi to 11 and upping the cpu fsb to 200mhz it will boot as far as the windows desktop welcome screen and then it just reboots itself, dont really understand why cos a friend has the same barton core chip on the exact same mobo and his runs fine,not to worry i did as you suggested and just o/ced on the fsb currently running at 180mhz giving me 2.255ghz i also kept the memory in sync with the cpu running the memory fsb at the same 180mhz thus enabling me to keep my dual channel capability which was the main thing i didn't want to lose. vcore in bios is set at 1.7v but actually shows in asus probe, bios, and cpuz to be running up to 1.76v current temps are 37c idle 41c full load with cpu fan running at 4400rpm so everything looks cool and stable at the moment {only time will tell}gonna run some stress tests tonite just to be sure will keep you posted
    yes kalunjoku there is another bios rev 1009 but to be honest the idea of flashing the bios gives me the shits as iv'e heard so many horror stories so as long as this version runs with no hiccups i'll make do for the time being lmao
    and no sandra doesn't give you the capability to overclock
    p.s does anyone else running this board have the same problem i do in that whatever you set the vcore voltage to in bios it always runs approx .5v higher than the bios setting
    for anyone interested here are results from cpuz on my o/c

    dr xp- the computer I have is about 3 years old so I need help over clocking it seeing as the specs arent to great and upgrading is an issue because im on budget. Here are some specs- tell me if you need to know more about it:

    CPU- AMD Athlon XP 1800+
    RAM- 256MB (only detects 224 for some reason)
    PS- only 300W
    Mobo- im actually not sure...

    PS- im fairly new to computers and OCing I have no clue about so please bare with me

    Also the processor speed is 1.53GHz

    just a quick update was watching my voltage readings and they were spiking quite erratically {all voltages not just vcore }so i turned the vcore down to 1.675v in bios now they all seem to be rock stable with v core reading a constant 1.72v .
    with regards to the p.s in my last post i meant to say that the vcore was running .05v above the bios setting not .5v sorry for any confusion lol

    hey! swampsnake glad you oced and stable thats how you build your own experience by trying.. about volt the same in my mobo even if you dont touch your vcore the voltages spikes a little (due to some brandas of power supplies that doesn´´t have an stable output).

    ------------------------------------------------------
    ok bmx, mobo model and chipset are very important the chipset is what integrates all the hardware in the board in order to work right (sort of).
    chipsets for amd are: via(kt133,kt266,kt400 to name some), sis,and nforce 1 and 2 the importance of this some of them are better to overclock than others!!

    if your system is 3 years old then it can be via kt133 or kt266 or sis.

    ok need some more info:
    1-your mem is ddr or sdram?
    2-cpu cooler is the stock cooler from amd?
    theres aplications like sissoft sandra,cpu-z that can give you info about your mem and motherboard like brand it will be more easy to help you if i know that
    let me know.

    about the 256ram your mobo only detects 224 because your mobo has built in video card that uses or share memory from your ram. your mobo video card is set to use 32mb of your ram you can change that in your bios screen..

    hey, ok first of all I have tried Sandra 2005 Lite and Sandra 2005 Professional but some problem keeps on occuring saying "failed to connect to target computer...ect" and for my memory:
    RAM-pretty sure its DDR
    CPU Cooler- asuming stock, seeing as I have done nothing to that computer

    But as for the motherboard, I am totally clueless becuase Sandra is not working...is there an other program that can tell me these things?

    Arite, everthing is good now. Im using AIDA 32 and have all the information now.

    The mobo name is:
    [bold]Biostar M7VIQ[/bold]

    Memory Bus Type is:
    [bold]DDR SDRAM[/bold]

    So I have all the info now so if you need more just ask.
