OK. Let's try this. I have included a picture of the power supply board and labeled eight capacitors near the front of the PCB with their reference designators. They are listed below: REF WVDC VALUE PANASONIC PART NUMBER C1570 10V 1000U EEUFM1A102 C1413 6.3V 1500U F2A0J1520007 C1513 10V 470U F2A1A4710038 C1501 16V 470U EEUFM1C471L C1273 25V 220U F2A1E2210050 C1407 25V 220U EEUFM1E221 C1400 25V 220U EEUFM1E221 C1406 10V 680U EEUFM1A681 Let me know if any of these are the ones you are looking for. I'm guessing it's C1501 you are looking for, but it's hard to tell height from my pictures. (BTW, note that the pictures listed by scott16 in 'http://www.rbjtech.net/electrical/e85/e85.htm' appear to be the British version--which uses a different power supply board than used in the US)
Looks like it's C1413, so I need to go after a 1500uf cap. A quick look at RadioShack shows 1000uf and 2200uf, so I'll keep looking. Funny thing is the DVR reset 4 times that one day and hasn't reset all week. It just got a channel lineup this morning, so once it has all the guide data again I'll be curious to see how it behaves. btw those schematics you have, are they publicly available somewhere? Thanks for all the help!!!
I got the schematics from http://www.servicemanuals.net (reference my post of Aug 2007 on page 62 of this site--post #1546). They cost me $24--but were worth it. It's a very detailed shop manual. C1413 is a filter capacitor on the 1.8vdc line--found on P1102 pin 21 (the connector between the power PCB and the Main PCB). I would expect that a 2200 uF cap would be OK as a replacement. The voltage rating of 6.3v is more than adequate--but greater won't hurt either. (reference post #1883 on page 76 of this site for a short discussion of ratings.)
Well the darn thing reset today while recording. So over a week it only resets when it had guide data, which it hasn't done before over the 5 years or so I've owned the DVR. I don't see how a hardware problem could cause this behavior, but then it would also help to know what the 1.8v supply is used for and if that bad cap is causing my resets. After I get that cap changed I'll see if it starts behaving again.
It could be your Hard Drive is starting to go, I had that with my DMR-HS2,once I replaced my HDD with a new one it worked again. Maybe sure you backup all your important saved video to DVD-RAM discs (or DVD-R) before replacing a HDD on one of these.
Are you saying your system was randomly reseting, even during recordings, and replacing the hard drive fixed it? I would assume if I had hard drive errors I would get error messages like "There has been an error", rather then the unit going into "self check".
Well since my DVR started behaving I didn't pursue the reset issues from several weeks ago. Then Wednesday night it reset 3 times during the evening and today it's back to working just fine. Following Yankees link I got the schematics, so I'll dig into it and see if I can find anything hardware-wise that's failing. It's such an infrequent failure I wonder if there's a software / guide related problem, since the local PBS station just replaced their TVGOS equipment.
wbarnes, Panny said h and above was the new firmware. If you have a J and your tv guide screen has locked up they're incorrect. I can't find any of these above e. I think I'm going to hold off for a few weeks and see if a new model come out. How long have you had your? How often has it locked up? I could go about 4-5 days. I could tell it was getting ready to crap out, It would become unresponsive to scrolling the guide. Can you actually edit the hard drive on this one too? I thought Panasonic was not making these anymore? Also is this made for the US?
It's made for the overseas market (hence the PAL tuner) I use a cable box with A/V outputs so I don't need to use the tuner, I use the HDMI output to connect it to my 46" Samsung TV it works fine. It's pretty much the same as the DMR85H except it doesn't have "TV Guide". To shorten videos (like remove commercials) they call it "partial delete" now instead of Shorten. And the clock is 24 hour time instead of 12 hour AM/PM. Its got a lot more inputs and outputs, and also 250GB instead of 120GB (they also make one that's 320GB too). And it's thinner, the eject button and power button are on the top instead of on the front (so it's a bit hard to find them in the dark), everything else is pretty much the same (it can even read/write to DVD-RAMs which is one thing other Brands can't).
Thanks for all the details again......so are you using both a transformer and converter for the electrical source? I saw a suggestion to just buy these thru Amazon. Is this sufficient....I mean so you have to get an expensive transformer?
You mean the power supply?, it works on standard 110V AC (they also give power cords for foreign AC like 220V). For video I just hook it to the composite AV output (RCA connectors)from my cable box. there's also some sort of HD (not HDMI) inputs, and a HDMI output.
Wow, so they send a US 110V Ac power cord AND the ones for 220V? Oh maybe it is one of those 100-240v power cords like most of the equipment today uses. This makes it easier to consider now..... Then the foreign power supply cords must use plugs for the different foreign countries...??
It is a single cord compatible with 110-220 volts. It comes with multiples adaptors to adapt the plug to us ac power. I bought the Panasonic DMR-EH69. It is identical to the EH59, but with 320 gig. It is very similar to the DMR-EH85 with a few bonus... SD card, USB port... Also, it allow you to pre-enter the title of the show. It remembers from week to week what is the title of the show. It also allow you to classify your titles in different buckets. There is a variable commercial skip. Sometimes it skips right away to the beginning of the commercial, then to the end. But sometimes it does not work well. So I am not 100% sold on that specific feature. You can play music and show pictures. It has only 2 RCA/S-Video input (there is 3 on the DMR-EH85). But there is an SCART input. I am trying to find an adaptor to plug a third component in it. Overall, this is a very very good replacement (the only good one) for the DMR-EH85 and I recommand it.
I want one with ATSC (Clear QAM) tuner, so I bought the new Magnavox MDR513H/F7 recorder with 320 GB HDD. Very happy so far after about 6 months. New price is under $200.
I was also told about this one. A friend has been using it since her last Panny died. She has the model right before this one. Thanks for the info.
Reason I have been looking at possible alternative DVD recorders (hard babies to find) is that for the past two weeks I have had a crazy problem. With timer recorder set, my DMRE95H started to record another channel (about 2 wks. ago). It was erratic at first and was still mostly recording the set channel but then the frequency of the WRONG channel being recorded increased. I also noticed that when I turned the TV set on, it was usually "locked" into another channel. I had to turn the cable box off and on in order to tune into another channel. I watched as the "g-link" would not function at all during this time. I first called Panasonic for help and they made me reset the DVD recorder. This made it worse as after that I could not use the Panasonic remote to access a TV channel with 3 digits - something I have done since I bought the machine (6 yrs. ago). I can input 2 digits with the Panny remote and the "G-link" will signal the cable box to change. Now, if I enter 3 digits, it will only pick up the last digit. The other problem was that the recording of the WRONG channel escalated after the reset. On timer programmings, it will record the wrong channel MOST of the time now. I swapped out the "G-link"from my Panny EH75V and the same problem was happening so I assume it is not the "g-link." If the TV is on, the recorder will change and record every program correctly. But the problem seems to be that the signal to the cable box does not work properly when the TV is off. I know that the TV is not supposed to have a role in the recording process but that is when the signal goes haywire. The local repair guy (Panasonic under warranty) does not seem to want to look at it now. My options have been to stay home all day and night to record (ha, ha) or leave the TV on whenever I go out and want a program recorded. Any insights would help or what I should tell this repair guy so he says to bring it in for repair......HELP!
Hi, I have a DMR E85 with the typical "please wait" issue and it had 2 bad caps(the 10v 680uf ones). To start out this began 1-2 yrs ago. The unit all the sudden was dead as in would not turn on. I found numerous threads about the caps. I initially change the 2 bad ones with the higher value radio shack ones. Then the unit would turn on to the please wait message but never get past it. I tried replacing the other 2(16v 680uf) as well since some people have them go bad even tho they looked fine. I also looked the whole units circuitry over visually for obvious defects. Still the unit is stuck on please wait. I put it aside until now and now ordered the exact same value caps and installed them in the correct polarity and still it is stuck on please wait. I have the correct voltage on the power pins to the HD plug. The unit will respond to the power button and shut off to a blinking clock as in time needs set. The other commands you perform by pushing several buttons on the front of the unit cause it to return to Please Wait. I have never seen an error code and the unit has always been plugged into a UPS. I am not an electronics tech but do minor repairs to phones, game consoles, PC's etc. including micro soldering so the cap change was easy enough. Maybe bad HD? Any ideas?
