    Sparky,

I don't know that much about it, but I thought that the E85 would allow you to record and copy "flagged" programming once for personal use.

I could be completely wrong and I'm sure someone will correct me.

Howie, you could be right. I was just throwing it up as a possibility. We did have a newer Panasonic combo recorder that came in to the shop (DMRES40) where the customer recorded a movie to the VCR from the local network, and then when he went to burn it onto the recorder, it wouldn't allow it. He was really ticked off.

What might throw a monkey wrench into that copy once scheme is that the broadcasters appear to be updating to stricter copy protection, which may kill the record once allowance.

When I make copies of things I've recorded off the air and go to play them on my computer, I get a warning from WIN DVD that I need to download a patch to play the material. I just hit "cancel" and it plays it anyway.

My play button on the romote is going. Where would be the cheapest to get a replacement remote? I was thinking of goning the universal route, but I really don't want to spend $100 on something that may not work. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

    Rock Star ....
Wally World (Walmart, AKA the evil empire) usually carries a line of programmables for around $20-$30, grab one before the panny remote goes bad, and "learn" it .... use teh panny remote to teach the universal the codes, ... I've tried to find a programmable, ... even though they say "Panasonic DVR" it still has problems with some of the functions, ... requiring the "Learning". Personally I think the one I've taught works better, better range I guess on the IR transmitter.

Update: After 2 1/2 months without TV Guide listings they showed up over night. I hope they finish filling in and stick around for a while this time.

We had a new non "u99"problem tonight. While my wife was using th machine and Iwas out, the unit quit displaying any info about the hard drive.

I did the unplug without success, but the display returned after I hit a bunch of buttons on the remote. I think it cleared when I selected the DVD drive, but I'm not sure.

    Holy Cow!!

Out of the blue I got an email from Cheryl:

    ----------------------------------------
    Hi Kelly,

Sorry for the very delayed response on this. The problem with missing
recordings has finally been reproduced here and our engineers were able to capture debug logs. The problem is now with Panasonic's engineers.
    ----------------------------------------

Of course it's up to the Panasonic guys to create a fix and distribute it, who knows how long that might take.

Thanks vulcanusa! Thats what I ended up doing, buying it off of ebay. Great price and its the exact same as I have now. No use in buying a universal at all most the same price that may not be fully functional.

    RockStar4,

    No problem.

I presume if you've purchased from eBay before you know you might always get something that is not "as advertised". I bought 4 DMR-E85H's from eBay. Three have worked fine. One was advertised as not being able to burn DVD's, but the ad stated it powered-up successfully. Well, it's possible the seller really didn't know what constituted a complete and proper power cycle, but it never power cycled properly. The useless unit was only about 1/2 to 1/3 the price of the working units, so it basically constituted the purchase of parts. The hard drive is fine. I installed it into a PC and ran Samsung's diagnostics.

I've not purchased a lot from eBay. Most of the stuff I've purchased is fairly low priced like your remote control purchase. Sometimes you know you've been ripped off and sometimes the product is damaged in shipping (e.g. a poorly packaged printer). The items are usually not enough money to be worth the hassle of pursuing a claim. I always check the feedback history of the seller and never purchase from someone with a short history or positive feedback below 97 or 98%. Anyway, a little off topic, but hope your purchase works out.

    vulcanusa,

This is my first "big" purchase outside t-shirts & signs. So I am crossing my fingers it works out. I stick to the small stuff, because I am so worried about getting screwed. No way would I bring myself to buying something like a DVD-Recorder on ebay. Even if the person had sold a million things with 100% feedback, I still wouldn't do it. It maybe silly, but somehow I would end up screwed! lol A friend of mine bought a ipod and got sent a PSP. It was just nothing but one huge headache for him to get it all fixed. My luck it would happen to me or worse.. like it being damaged in shipping.

THANKS so much for the update and continued contact with Cheryl, [bold]dksmall[/bold]!!

Does anyone have a snail mail address for Panasonic so that we might all flood them with REAL letters to get their butts in gear on this "disappearing scheduled recording" issue now that we know the ball is in THEIR court?!

Side (off-topic) note about eBay: in over 100 transactions, some well above $200, I've never had a MAJOR problem. ASK QUESTIONS of the seller before bidding and see if they give EDUCATED responses (or ANY), and check their return policy. Granted, any electronics I have bought there have been 25+ years old. There ARE a few gems among the junk sellers (I'm talking PEOPLE) on eBay.

    Dear DMR-E85H Experts -

Are there more then one DMR-E85 model (DMR-E85H, DMR-E86HS, DMR-E86P)?

I live in North Hollywood, CA - Zip Code 91606 - connected to the Adelphia Area C (Van Nuys, North Hollywood, Redondo) "classic" basic and extended service analog cable system - w/DVDR connected directly to the cable - bypassing the cable box.

The Panasonic website firmware download / upgrade fixed my U99 error.

My TVGOS system correctly sets the clock, downloads five channel lineup choices, channel lineup 1 is the correct lineup, downloads channel logos for the selected lineup, downloads the promos, but never downloads the channel listings.

TVGOS identifies Channel 6 KCET as the host channel - but always says that the Last DL channel was Channel 97 KCET - which is a spare that appears to be used by Adelphia for trying out new features. VBI data is clean - with only exceedingly tiny fraction of errorneous packets.

TVGOS says Adelphia is supposed to be relaying YVGOS's VBI feed on Channel 96 - but this is a blue screen channel with no data feed - most likely Adelphia meant to tell TVGOS Channel 97 not Channel 96.

Has anyone had any more luck getting channel listings in my area?

Does anyone have any ideas what might be helpful to do to resolve the issue of Channel 6 being identified as host channel but Channel 97 is always the last download channel? Both Channel 6 and Channel 97 are automatically identified as KCET.

The fact the logos and promos download cleanly suggests I am getting the right VBI feed - but it is annoying not to get channel listings.

Please help if you know what to do - Kind Regards, Alexandra

    Alexandra...

I too have Adelphia, Cleveland Ohio area, zip 44041. I subscribe to the digital system and now added HD. I haven't been able to download the TVGOS but once before the big U99 error situation. I have to run the cable through the cable box to get the digital and HD services. For some reason this disables the TVGOS. It's a real pain but one I have to live with. I have noticed recently that when I turn on my tv and get the dreaded "The search for data has failed" screen, the Ads on the left are updated. It's interesting that these get through fine but the listings don't. Does anyone know why this happens? I know if I try calling Adelphia or TV Guide, I'll get no help.

One thought that comes to mind is to move channel 96 to the top of your listing page, so it starts it's scan with that channel.

Just a quick note-- after several months of no TVGOS at all in the NYC area (TimeWarner digital cable), my E85 is finally showing the TVGOS. It was a real pain not having it, and not knowing why it has disappeared, but I am happy to have it back again. It is one of the main reasons I bought the E85 in the first place.

After months of only a few "disappearing" scheduled recordings, I now have no TVGOS data (the listings ran out at 8AM this morning, Tuesday). I did a soft reset at 8:15AM, and still have no listings as of 4PM, with no shows scheduled to record since Monday night. I'm wondering if I'll have to break down and do a hard reset after writing down all my scheduled programs...

I just had the same thing happen. DVR was working great for months, then I noticed today was the last day of guide data. Sunday I did a soft-reboot (hold power down). 3 hours later I had a U99, so I pulled the plug and started fresh. Had 4 days of guide data Monday morning, didn't check this morning, but it's been recording our shows and all seems ok now. I wonder if it has something to do with daylight savings time? In AZ we don't change the clocks.
