You removed the ToolbarUpdater with Revo that’s why this line shows (file missing) The service is still there dead in the water. We can go ahead and remove it. HJT will not remove a Service; it just stops them from running. So we need to take an extra step:

First check and fix this line with HJT to clear the registry entry:

    O23 - Service: vToolbarUpdater15.5.0 - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\AVG Secure Search\vToolbarUpdater\15.5.0\ToolbarUpdater.exe (file missing)

    Then:

    To Delete the Service

Please open Notepad. Ensure that word wrap is turned off. Click on Format and make sure that there is not a tick next to Word Wrap. If there's one, click on Word Wrap to remove it. Copy and paste the following in the code box into Notepad:
    Code:
    @echo off
    sc stop “vToolbarUpdater15.5.0”
    sc delete “vToolbarUpdater15.5.0”
    exit

Click on File > Save As....

In the File Name box, copy and paste in fix.bat
In the Save as type box, select All Files from the drop-down list.

Click Save and save it to your Desktop.

Double click on fix.bat. A Command Prompt window will open and close quickly. That is normal.

That should remove the last junk that I missed :(

    ddp,

For your and others benefit.. here are some tips for HJT.

    Examples:
    O23 - Service: RoxioNow Service - Roxio - C:\Program Files (x86)\Roxio\RoxioNow Player\RNowSvc.exe
O23 - Service: Remote Packet Capture Protocol v.0 (experimental) (rpcapd) - CACE Technologies, Inc. - C:\Program Files (x86)\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe
    O23 - Service: @%systemroot%\system32\Locator.exe,-2 (RpcLocator) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\locator.exe (file missing)
    O23 - Service: @%SystemRoot%\system32\samsrv.dll,-1 (SamSs) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\lsass.exe (file missing)

At this time, HijackThis doesn't support 64-bit operating systems. However, you can still use it if you know how to interpret the logs. You can tell if it’s a 64bit system (Vista or Win7) by finding the “Program Files (x86)” folder in the running processes of a HJT Log. 32bit systems do not use or have this folder. They only have the “Program Files” folder. A 64bit system has Both!

Tips for analyzing a HJT Log on a 64bit system:

1.) Ignore the O23 entries with "@" signs and showing (file missing). They are Legal Microsoft services not normally showing in a HijackThis log.
2.) If you are checking a 64bit system, any 023 entry other than the ones with “@” signs that show (file missing) are there because 64bit Windows placed them in the folder sysWOW64 instead of system32 and 32bit HJT can’t see them there so it shows (file missing). Do not fix them unless they are really a *bad* file..
3.) HijackThis will only show running processes for one user in 64bit (Windows 7 and Vista).
4.) If Windows is denying access to the Hosts file, run HijackThis as Administrator or disable the UAC first.

For both 32bit and 64bit always remember this:

In this case I knew the file was missing because it had been removed by Revo, therefore the Service played no role and could either be removed or left alone…

2oG, I removed the specific file entry from hjt as you recommended, but I also have a helluva lot of other entries in hjt w/ "file missing" at the end. Do I "Fix" them too?

n/m I read your instructions on the 64 bit hjt you were pointing out to ddp & see that they are Legal MS entries.

Well,I created that batch file, removed the AVG toolbar, and everything else you instructed. Am I good?

I believe you are good to go.. How is it running now?

Just keep working on eliminating anything you don't use or need, watch what you download and keep it defraged...

    Enjoy,

HJT is old but it aint dead yet. I still use it for some things but it does have it's limitations. I always use it to put a stop to programs that think they need to run all the time when the computer is running and chew up memory and resources...

@aldan, here is another little tip on 023 lines:

When you fix a O23 entry Hijackthis will change the startup for this service to disabled, stop the service, and then ask the user to reboot. It will not delete the actual service from the registry or the file it points to. In order to delete the service you will need to know the service name. This name is the text between the parenthesis. If the display name is the same as the service name, then it will not list the service name and you are able to use the display name. If the display name has spaces within it you must “enclose it in quotations”. It’s always best to enclose any display name in quotes, spaces or not.

There are several methods you can use to delete the service:

    1. Delete it using XP's SC command you would type the following from a command prompt:

sc delete servicename or sc delete “service name”

or build a Bat file like I did above.

    2. Use HijackThis to delete the service. You can click on Config, then Misc Tools, and then press the Delete an NT service.. button. When it opens you should then enter the service name and press OK.

Be careful when removing items listed in these keys as for the most part they are legitimate. To research O23 entries you can use the Bleeping Computer Startup Database or SystemLookup.com.

Just another little tip from the 2oG bucket.

2oldGeek, startup a guide on this forum & i'll stickie it so remains at top of the list. you can edit it & add to it but post a warning that any questions\problems are not to be posted in that guide.

ddp, I started one some time ago and it got so confusing because of the 64 bit problem that Trend Micro never fixed after buying HJT from Merjin that I gave up on it. But I can get into it again. One of the problems is that the newer malware is not using most of the reg locations that this HJT was written for. And HJT does not remove malware files they must be removed manually or with a Malware removal tool. I will "Man-up" and spend some time on it to see how it goes. I will have to patronize most of the explanations because it would overwhelm most of the computer users that were not Die-Hard Geeks.LOL

I will see how it goes.
2oG That "2" is getting closer to a "Too" every day.. :)

Hey 2oG, I might be blind but I can't locate the donations tab. I'll keep looking but as of now I'm overlooking it I guess. Thanks
