pc is soo slow even after full virus and adware scan !

Kick Norton to the curve and use Avast 4 Pro Edition for starters, hell the free version is an excellent program also. Glad the guys were able to help you out but you need to find some other virus protection program. Norton is a big time resource hog in my opinion..then again what virus protection program isn't. What I dislike about Mcafee and Norton is that every year you have to pay whatever it is $20 to update the damn virus definitions(not with Avast), the free version of Avast was able to detect virus's that Norton Couldn't. These are my experiences with Norton and Mcafee so hopefully I haven't pissed anyone off who use Norton in here.

 

Norton, in all, blows! I recommend PC-cillin. It takes no time in your system start-up and has awsome attributes already in the package. If you decide to switch over to PC-cillin get the 05-06 package.

i have to use norton cause i have internet security 05 which has all of my security, if it were up to me i would get zonealarm, but it isn't so im stuck...

 

ive used zone alarm internet secuirty, its great but it is also a bit of a resourse hog for some people, it was great for me while i used it.

i use AVG pro,but i recommend AVG free its worth a try and it wont slow you down no were near as much as norton does if anyone is thinking of a switch,itll find much more than norton, did for me anyway.

As for this slow down your getting try disabling everything from start up(start>run>msconfig) and search in google for every one of you processes, youve probaly got something in there.

Secondly, I agree with others regarding Norton - it's pants! My recommendations for security software are as follows:

Sygate Personal Firewall Pro - The best firewall I have ever used and I've tried many! Only one running process and depending on the amount of rules you add, it's unlikely to eat more than 15MB's of memory. Has recently been bought out by Symantec but the program has stayed the same and as long as it does, I'm a happy customer. Another good Firewall is Kaspersky. Coincidently, there is a free version of Sygate titled Sygate Personal Firewall - just lacks a few network related features of the Pro version but still does the job.

For anti-virus, NOD32 is the hands down winner. Can be a bit complicated at first but once you get used to it, it's a doddle and doesn't use much resources. BitDefender Professional Plus is a good package too which comes with Firewall, Anti-Spam and Registry Monitor - great value.

With regards to other things you can do, Defragging can help immensly especially if you haven't defragged for a while. I use a program called Perfect Disk which performs a number of different types of defrag - offline (system/page file) defrags can help with boot speeds and performance and online defrags do wonders for Windows.

Also, using MsConfig to edit down your 'Run' list is another valid point of action though I find it easier to edit the Registry directly with the following keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
&
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If you're not too sure with what you see, use Google to research the programs listed before removing and it would be a good idea to back the keys up before editing.

Get yourself a decent Registry cleaning program such as Registry First Aid. Once you have sorted your system out a bit and put any new programs on and removed unwanted ones, give your registry a thorough scan, you'd be surprised at the difference it can make. One word of warning though, check through what the program (whichever one you use) suggests is ok for deletion and always back it up beforehand.

no dont switch from norton to avast, a great combo is AVG free and zone alarm free, but if you want that extra paid for protection go for AVG pro and zone alarm pro(thats what i use and its damm great)that firewall stops everything and great anti virus nothing to worry about.

come on Phantom69 look at all the antivirus review sites, Avast isnt even mentioned on hardly any of them,i havent seen it in many top tens.

well im angry at avast at the moment, my freind was telling me its good and to try the free version(AVG free is alot better also)he was telling me that it got rid of loads of crap and all this and one day while i was luckily for him round his house,he got some alerts and sudenly the computer rebooted,was running damm slow,safe mode was gone(i mean it was not even there!!!)couldnt do anything realy and in the end we had to reinstall xp , damm Avast bet AVG wouldve had it...

well thats just my opinion im sure it works out alot better for other people,im just saying you should stay away from avast(just try AVG free!!).

i had already looked for this in google but i only searched for firewalls and it seems that sygate was the best free firewall but stupid greedy symantec had to buy it and cut of the free version...

i have found out that AntiVir is the best freeware alternative for AV available and like you said ZoneAlarm for firewalls...

I have to disagree. Avast has been one of the best AV programs I have used to date. Simple, effective, and I have not had a virus since day one. The real time protection is in my opinion the most effective tool stopping websites in their tracks before any bugs can wreak their havoc. When it comes to free software you really cant ask to much but avast has done wonders for me. And they are a finalist for best AV this year. Just my two cents all.

im not saying its a bad AV im just saying i think that AVG free is the no 1 freeware AV around, i have to say i recomend it to all, very reliable and will keep you safe.

i'm going to get rid of norton tomorrow or friday, as soon as i have time, and install a new anti-virus.

did you set these pages:

if you didnt select them and select fix in HijackThis...

select these two:

and click the fix button in Hijack This, they are empty classes and are unecessary...

i see you have edited the msconfig, this can create problems aswell unless you know what you are doing:

Hi Guys,

I've done all thats been suggested so far,

dumped norton and installed a 90 day trial of panda 2006

sorted all the process i was told to

and still my pc is very sluggish,

my mouse pointer is slow and doesn't respond very well, just like when the batteries are low,

when i start up the windows music distorts,

if i play a music file and try to carry out ANY other application the music distorts,

and in general normal jobs are taking two or three times as long as normal,

i'm beginning to think the only option i have left is to format and completely start over ?

is it that time yet you think?

im just gonna shoot this, defrage your hard drive, sometimes when files get cluttered it takes longer to find and causes a slow down.

 

also defrag your registry:

its a 21 day trial version, but you only need to run it once for now, till a freeware alternative is found.
