Hey guys, I recently picked up a old PC from a friend that he screwed up and he didn't know how to fix. He ended up getting a new one, so he gave me his old one. It's still fairly decent, and I want to fix it.

The other day I tried to reformat it, but I found a few problems along the way. When I tried to put in Windows XP, it would start the set up and formatting and everything would be fine, but once it started to copy in the system files and what not the whole thing would shut down. About half way thought the screen would turn black and the computer would just stop operating.

I tried putting in Windows ME and it worked fine, but I don't like ME. I tested all the hardware and all of them all seem to work. I put in a new HDD and some new RAM.

Any ideas on how to fix it?

    -Thanks

Will it work with XP? That's what I suggest. I don't know why it doesn't work with 98...

Was this happening before or after you put in the new hardware?

The copy of windowx xp could possibly be where your problem is at.
Try installing A different copy of XP.

when it won't load the files here after a couple of tries we use a new cdrom drive
mostly it lets the files load
the other way is to copy the files onto the hard drive and boot into dos (use the me disc) and run setup from there

It's worth a try. Was he a gamer? The optical drive might have been Starforced.

The model of the motherboard is a Asus P4PE. In the beginning it worked fine until my operations system crashed. I reformatted and then I couldn't put windows XP back on. Then I tried changing out some of the parts. Put in some new RAM, a new HDD, a new disk drive, I even borrowed my friends copy of XP and tried to put it on, but pretty much, I got all the same results.

Pretty much once is finishes formating the drive, It will go into the windows XP operations system setup thing. It will load, then about half way though it shuts down...

    Any other ideas?

    -Thanks

Actually your grammar in this thread has been excellent, it just lacked punctuation. Reading it through properly and your posts are fine.

it's a tricky one, and unless you happen to have spare components to try, I'm not sure I know how to solve it, sorry.
