i replaced a faulty dvd-rom with a dvd burner(giving me 2 dvd burners) and now my pc shuts off when i put a blank dvd in the new drive. my temp never goes above 40c and i have a 450 watt ps.

my pc is an amd 64 3500 cpu with the x2 copper hs/fan, a biostar nforce 4 ultra mb, 1 gig 3200 ddr ram, twin 250 gig samsung hd's, twin samsung dvd burners, nvidia pci-e 256 meg 7300 gs vid-card running xp-pro.

any insight would be greatly appreciated, my husband is going crazy...

If both drives are on the same ide cable, make sure than one is set to master and the another one to slave,by placing the jumper correctly at the back of the drives.

try the new burner by itself to see if still does it or not. are both hd's on 1 cable & the 2 burners on another cable?

Check master/slave on back of dvd burners and also new cable if same one on both drives and like what was said try each individually to see if both are alright. Then when you get all that right delete the ide drivers concerned and reboot letting it find them itself. Trying to help. Good luck

Did you try your new burner on a cable by itself burning and trying to read it to see if the new drive is indeed at fault?

i hooked the burner up via a usb adapter kit and it worked flawlessly, it only shuts off when installed in the computer as m,s, or cable select via ide cable. im at a loss...this is dvdchick's hubby by the way......lol

swap the ide ribbons around where they go into the motherboard
that ought to eliminate that question
    very interesting prob lol
is it a heavy 450 psu or a light one ?
does it do the same if it is the only dvd drive connected
have you looked for a firmware update ?
