Philips dvp 642 and subtitles... once again

Ok... i know there are a number of posts dealing with
using external subtitles on the philips 642, but I'm at a
    loss.

No matter what I do, no matter whos instructions I
follow, I simply cannot get my player to work with
    respect to subtitles.

It shows .sub files as an mpeg2 ... and doesn't show
    anything else at all.

-I have done the firmware update
    -I know the proper procedure
-according to philips, the player supports .sub, .srt,
and .smi... but several posts say it has to be text-
based format... so .sub is out
-I've attemped to convert .sub to .srt using the
    application Sub2Srt 0.9
-I've attempted to simply convert a file from .txt to .srt
    by changing the suffix, nope.

Currently, I have a video file, .sub, .txt and .idx

please help me figure this out

If they say sub, .srt and .smi they would mean sub as in the text format (Micro DVD or whatever) not half of a VOBSub.

Try converting to srt with SubRip.
