I noticed this problem when playing Divx Anime files (tvrips).
The subtitles would get cut on the bottom. Only half of the text appears. I read somewhere it had something to do with the resolution that the DVP642 plays Divx at.

Is there a workaround for this?

I have(had)the same problem with the DVP642, take my advice-instead of going through all the hassle of modifying divx and xvid, etc to square pixel and all, just make some mods to your computer. I put in a video card that has an svideo output and an audio card that has a pdif coaxial output, plug the audio into your reciever, video into your tv and let the computer do all the work instead of yourself. I hated not being able to see all of the subs myself (as I don't speak japanese). If you have any questions feel free to email me and I'll be glad to help.
