I think you might get more opinions if you have posted in the DVD±R Drive section.
Pioneer is a decent and solid drive. It does autobooktype DVD+R DL media to DVD-ROM by itself but however you will need to use a hacked firmware to be able to booktype DVD+R media to DVD-ROM.

If your casing has enough room to accommodate the internal pioneer drive, then you can go for it instead of going with an external one.In my own opinion, internal is always better than external ones. Also you must check if you have one available ide connector on the ide cable,if in your system there's only one ide cable and both connectors are already in use on that cable, then you can use another ide cable which you'll need to get, connecting it with your secondary ide connector on your board and connect it with your drive.

About software, you can use the Nero oem burning software cd they will give you together with the drive and if you want, you can get some others depending on you, some are free and some aren't.
