My trusty Pioneer 420 suddenly seems unable to recognize dvds. When loading a blank dvd for recording, I get a message "can't use this dvd". Sometimes it loads and then the message is "no disc".

It seems to have failed during recording. Got about halfway through a dvd and stopped, message displayed: "cannot complete recording".

This workhorse has probably made at least 1000 dvds. I use only Ritek Ridata GO4 & G05 -R and -RW 8X and 4X dvds.

I've tried both the -R and -RW dvds with no success. The hard drive still shows the recorded content and plays it just fine. Everything else works fine - it just won't read dvds.

I tried running a CD/DVD cleaning disc in it, without results.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

Wow, the suggestions and help from people here is almost underwhelming. I can see that this is a very useful site. I'm sure I'll stick around here for at least another 10 or 15 seconds.

    See ya.
