Hi! My friend is experiensing pretty serous problems when he tries to play avi and mpeg movies. What happens is that he gets a complete system lock up, and has to restart his computer. His OS is XP home. We have tried to downoald all kinds of codecs and video players. We even reinstalled his OS and updated it whitout any result of what so ever. Soon we will try an new os, but for now we are sadly stuck with XP home. Does anyone know what could be wrong?

avi, could be codec conflicts, or he could be decoding it with xvid at 16bit display settings, it happpened to me, like so. try uninstalling every codec and only ffdshow, latest.

as for mpeg, mpeg1 can be play out of the box of WMP or MPC, as the codec is already there, for mpeg2 try dvd player software, powerdvd etc, don't use mpeg2 decoder, free ones are crappy.
