I'm having issues buring a data DVD. It does work on an Imation DVD-RW, but not on a MTV DVD-R (it's rubbish, I know) or an Imation DVD-R.

Is this just a media type issue or something deeper? The log is below.

    Hi ubersims
    Welcome to aD
First let's edit out that serial at the top of the log - begins w/ 5C.
Update your firmware to the latest 1.22 - this can help your drive with write strategies of media.
The manufacturer confirms your stmt about them :)

Better to use would be Verbatim or made in Japan Fuji or Sony.

Not much else wrong. Your illegal disc looks like it's just a media and/or firmware update problem.

    *cough* Done

Does this actually mean something or is it just nasty text put in there by an inferior manufacturer?

This is the manufacturer & media code of who made those discs you're using. CMC Mag - 8x -R.
CMC is not know for it's quality - pretty hit or miss.

You say you are trying to burn a Data DVD. Would you go through the steps of how you set it up, like how you started the utility and what options you set for it? I'm just not used to seeing the "UDF Mode:pure" type entries.

Have you put the media in the drive and then done a disc info option? It should just show an empty disc, but it might do something else.

    1. I open Nero Burning Rom through the start menu
    2. Select DVD-ROM (UDF)
    3. I think I use the standard settings, although "Determine maximum speed", simulation and write are all selected.
    4. Select New
    5. Drop and drag my files
    6. Select Burn

It measures the speed OK and then loses it when it tries to simulate.

And for the record, I did a disc info check and it was an empty disc.

This may have nothing to do with your problem, but you might try it. If I use SmartStart to make a Data DVD, it sets up a DVD-ROM(ISO). You might try it that way to see if it helps. The only thing I changed was the Multi-session, which it seems to make default for this selection.

    Try what saltgrass suggested.
According to your last log 'multisession' is turned off - correct for a -R disc.
The next thing - again your drive may not like and fully recognize this disc. The media specific part in the log shows a generic code.

From what I can find on your drive it looks like a nec 1300a - max burn speed of 4x.
Usually the Sony or Fuji 8x that are made in Japan are manufactured by Taiyo Yuden. Very compatible with drives along w/ verbatim.
Your's are made by Sony which is good too.
Insert empty disc to write to.
(Medium in drive: Unknown. Medium required by compilation: DVD R/RW.)

When you start the data dvd - do you already hae the disc in the drive?

Try unchecking the simulation box, that might help.

Someone on another forum mentioned that the burner you have seemed to have problems with media rated at 8x. I know I have to use media rated at 1-2.4x for my old HP burner, so maybe, if you haven't already, try a media rated at a slower speed, like 4x. Even if you burn at a slower speed, it may not help if you are having this type of problem.

Another note, the DVD-RW that I said successfully burned in my first post is unreadable on my computer, but completely fine on my gf's computer.

I'm off to buy a new burner today anyway (for said gf's machine) but I might commandeer it for my PC. :)

Just say you want to test it out for her in yours 1st!! You know make sure everything is ok and what not.

Now for your curretn drive: It is an older drive and 8x & higher may give it a problem as saltgrass pointed out. Your log points again to the media not being fully recognized.
You could also try and lens cleaner on it - the lens may be dusty.
But I doubt this will help the illegal disc error.

    Keep us posted!

Well, all works well on the new DVD-RW, a Pioneer DVR-111D.

Just out of interest, the DVD-RW I burned originally now is readable on my computer.
