    I have Driver HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4164B
On my Nero Program the following Recorders show up:
    Image Recorder (DVD)
    Image Recorder CD-R/RW
HL-DT-ST DVD RRW GWA 4164B DVD
    HL-DT-ST DVD RRW GWA 4164B CR-R/RW

I can not make a Data DVD, either DVD+R or DVD-R.
    I am able to make a CD-R or CD-R/W.

I was told that DVD's have a greater capacity and have bought many DVD+R and DVD-R to find out that they do not work.

When I burn these DVD's with Nero Express I get a window asking to insert the disc to be written on: Disk Requirements: DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R9, Double Layer.
When I insertet a DVR+R the burn session failed at 16.620KB's.
When I put a DVR-R in the CD-ROM the shute opens to eject the disk.

Go to one of these locations and find your Nero history log, post it so we can take a look

Nero 6 history log location: Program Files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory.txt

Nero 7 history log location: Program Files>Nero>Nero 7>Core>NeroHistory

    VISTA: …. Desktop/Your Comp Name/App Data/Roaming/Ahead/Nero History

Gwendolin, I am sorry I am trying hard here, but not sure how I can reply, hope this is correct.
You instructed me to go to my Programm Files and I only have All Programs.Under All Programs I have Nero Program, Back-Up, CD-DVD Speed, Cover Des., Nero Drive Speed, Nero Express, Nero Information. I do not see anything about History.

I found the history log but I do not know how to post the log here. I looked for the Help on your Forum but can not find it. Can you please advise me how I can get the history to you. Thank you and I apologize for being so uninformed.

Your version of Nero is really old, try to update to this version

    6.6.1.15

    http://www.filehippo.com/download/7717bb2aa35a8a6b405b8322e5dfe50b/download/

DMA needs to be on, heres a guide to turn back on

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038

These arent good quality discs, try Verbatim or Sony (made in Japan)

You will also need to update your firmware from here

    http://support.fujitsu-siemens.com/...wareGUID=CB38A987-26EA-45FB-9791-82B279E0A39F

Slow your burn to 4 speed

Not to intrude, but memory seems low.
Edit out your serial number before someone cuts and pastes it into their own computer, or posts it on one of the serial number sites.
There are numerous times it shows up in your log, (at least 6) Use the find function of your browser to get each instance, search for 1A20 and edit them out.

Thank you so much. I will follow your advice but need some more explanation.
    1. I will update to version 6.6.1.15 with the link you have provided

    2. How do I turn the CdRomPeripheral: HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA 4164B atap Port 4 DMA: Off? Where do I find it?

    3. Where do I find the DMA to turn off?

    4. Quote: Disc. Manufacturer ID:MBIPG101, Media Type ID: RO5, Product revision number:1 Are these the disks I have used and I should use Verbatim or Sony (made in Japan) in future?

Quote: Recorder:<HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4164> Version:1.03 What do you mean by that?

    5. I will update the firmware from the link provided by you.

    6. What do you mean by slow your burn to 4 speed? Is that after I done the update etc. and how do I do that?

Gwendolin, also in what order should I do those suggested things? Should I do them in the order you listed them?

Thank you again for your prompt reply.

The discs to use in future are verbatim or sony

Just click on this link to update your firmware

    http://support.fujitsu-siemens.com/Downl...91-82B279E0A39F (link 1)

This link will show you how to turn your DMA on (at present it is off)

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038 (link 2)

You are burning your DVDs at 16 speed....slow the burn speed to 4

So basically all you have to do is
    1. Update your firmware from the above link 1
    2. Turn on your DMA from the other link 2 provided
    3. Reduce your burn speed to 4

    Thank you again.
I did not realize that I only have to click on the links. I have now downloaded the firmware from fuijitsu-siemens (link 1) and received a window with 2 files/folders in the temporary file, which in the meantime I can not find. Do you think the firmware installed? I did not save it I ran it.
I also have opened the link from "Alkohol" but it seems the first picture does not show. There is a red X for the first picture.
Gwendolin, how do I reduce the burn speed to 4?
I also looked at the update to version 6.6.1.15 and it says: Nero is a flexible, reliable, and easy-to-use application designed to write both data and CD audio to CD-R and CD-RW discs. It supports ISO 9660 image... more info...
Would this update allow me to burn my Data and Pictures on a DVD+ and DVD+RW? Above it only mentions CD's?
You people are extremley helpful and I appreciate your help and consideration. Thank you Gwendolin.

Yes this version will allow you to burn both DVDs and CDs....it's a little hard to describe how to reduce your burn speed as it depends on which particular application of Nero you are using....heres a pic ...but I am using Nero 7 and the application is NeroVision

Thank you. Can I change the speed after I download the updates to Nero 6.6.1.15.
I used Alkohols Guide re: DMA needs to be off and have discovered that I have 3 of each Primary IDE Channel and Secondary DE Channel. Should I uninstall 2 of them each. Actually one of them in the Seconday catergory has PIO Mode and needs to be uninstalled, I think, anyway.

I downloaded the firmware but do not know if it is in effect. How can I verify? I think I am getting paranoid now. All I know is, after the download I got a screen up Tem;. Folder with 2 files, and I am not sure if I should have installed from there. Can you please explain to me what I should do.

I just saw your post in my shoutbox, sorry don't look there much,
As far as physical memory goes, this is the amount of memory in your system, Nero recommends at least 512 Mbytes for burning, if you are multitasking, (I.E. surfing the net, having other programs open etc.) while you are burning this will also eat up a lot of your free memory.

    two options,
    1. buy more memory, I suggest Newegg.com
    or
    2. don't multitask and close down any open programs that aren't necessary to run your computer, disconnect from the net, turn off your anti virus and spyware programs, (only after disconnected from the net) Use Windows Task Manager to shut down unneeded programs. This should help out a bit.
