    Pretty good cincyrob!
    Was that a MIS or a MII Verb DL? I'd guess a MII.

    @newtechie
    That makes 3 of us with those lovely POS's in our laptops!

    HI Binkie7! Glad you could join us here! :D

    Well God forbids if something were to happen to our laptop dvd drives. Are there any options besides going back to HP to purchase another one?

    Well I bought an external for the 'just in case' - though it stays hooked up to a pc most of the time.
    The external isn't handy for the 'on the go' stuff - little to cumbersome to carry around w/ the laptop :)
    I mainly just use the laptop drive to watch a dvd or burn a cd.

    I burned dvd's with this drive - Taiyo's even - that after the burn it wouldn't even read them again. Played in everything else though.
    And the scans I got from this drive (using a LiteOn to scan) are pretty horrible.

    I also got an external due to a certain person's recommendation (Thanks Binkie7!)rather than replacing the Matshita with another internal (would have voided my warranty).

    It's the best thing I've done with the laptop! Now I can do disc to disc transfers, mutiple disc copies, burn DLs consistantly, scan (I got a lite-on external,again, thanks Binkie7!) and burn faster!

    I mainly use the internal now for playing cds, dvds & games.

    I don't have the problem of cumbersome "on the go" situation as I got a targus backpack for it all, quite handy.

    Enough on this for now. I'll be back shortly with some scans, I've got some in the oven!

    Several scans, all of them 8x MBI +R DLs, RICOHJPN D01 067's. All are first burns on ck's Samsung 203B SB01 ver 2 FB FR f/w.

    First is a 4x Burn with a 4x Lite-On 20a1h Scan. Burned on Samsung 203B #1 (I have 2).

    Here is another 4x Burn with a 4x Lite-On 20a1s Scan. This is burned on Samsung 203B #2.

    Here is the same disc scanned at 8x with the Lite-On 2a1s Scan. As you can see, I can't get a decent scan @ 8x, I get that high spike at the beginning no matter what disc I scan.

    nt,
    These guys have pretty much answered your questions. If the drive will still read DVD's and CD's then I would really consider the "external" option as binkie7 and hobbit have suggested. There's nothing better than starting the program of your choice and letting it cook until it spits out your product. :) Think about it ask some more questions. :D

    @cincyrob,
    Do those Ricohjpn Glossys play?

    Been fighting a build so haven't been around much lately. Got a few burns here that I've done, including a couple of 4x & 6x scan comparisons for cincyrob.

    The first are all glossy Ricohjpn 8x DLs.

    4x Samsung Burn, 4x Liteon 20a1h Scan

    4x Samsung#2 Burn, 4x Liteon 20a1s Scan

    4x Samsung#2 Burn, 6x Liteon 20a1s Scan(same disc as above)

    4x Samsung Burn, 4x Liteon 20a1h Scan

    4x Samsung Burn,6x Liteon 20a1h Scan(same disc as above}

    4x Samsung Burn, 4x 20a1h Scan

    The next 2 are Maxell 8x +Rs.

    6x Samsung#2 Burn, 8x Samsung Scan

    8x Samsung Burn, 4x Samsung Scan

    Some pretty good scans there hobbit. ;)

    What's going on with the build buddy??

    I had to send my Samsung back for replacement. I get the best drive on the market and it only burns to about 5 different media. That'll make you happy, NOT.... anyway Newegg is sending the replacement and it should be here in a day or two.

    @hobbit
    yea 3 of the 4 that i have burnt pla great no problems. but i dont think my litey likes them as far as the scans go i cant do a scan slower than 6x and when i do one at 8x it looks like the one i did above...

    hell yours looks great to me way better than mine.
    gonna do a 2.4x dl verb tonight when i get home. gonna do it on the fly.. im still not conviced on the ripping to HD the burn from there.. i get to good of results with clonedvd2 on the fly... thats just me though.

    @greensman,
    I'll PM you about the build, it's been a beast to say the least.

    @cincyrob & ChrisC586,

    I've been burning these glossy Ricohjpn D01s pretty steadily @ 4x with my Samsung 203B. 6x aren't as good. 8x burns are generally poor & usually don't play or at least freeze.

    I'll try & remember to do some more burns of these on my Lite-On 20a1h &20a1s drives for comparison. I've done some in the past but they haven't been as good as the Samsung. Same thing with my Benq DW1655.

    I've asked this before and haven't gotten an answer: What's the recommended procedure for scanning a freshly burned disc? What I mean is do you wait a certain amount of time for the drive & disc to cool down before the scan?

    I move the disc strait to the "scanning" drive. ;) Try it both ways and see what happens hobbit. I don't think you'll get that much of a difference in QS either way to prefer one over the other (cool or warm). :p

    waiting for the PM. ;)

    yup i agree with greensman. as soon as im done burning i do the QS. i can do it in either of my drives the 16x or the 18x litey dont matter.
    this sounds wrong but i have taken the disc out of the drive after scanning it, watched the disc then scanned it again and got a better scan?? dont ask me why???

    I've done it both ways too and have pretty much settled on ejecting the disc, waving it in the air to cool it somewhat and then putting it in the scanning drive.

    My main concern was with scanning the disc in the same drive used to burn it. I know some drives, especially the Benq & the Lite-Ons recommend allowing a cool-down period between burns.

    I'm to impatient for the "wait" period. lol. I have done them after the "cool" down period but I don't see enough of a difference to wait but that's me and my little self...hehehe.

    You know me hobbit. :p burn and scan baby, burn and scan!!! Speaking of that, bout to do just that....... Man this college degree comes in handy when I speaks or writes anything. lol.

    another good reason to use sata drives (less heat). when I'm running multiple burners after the third run i let them cool a bit.after they eject i feel the DVDs and if there warm i wait about 5 to 10 mins. when i had IDE drives they would actually come out hot. heat is the worse enemy of any drive/burner or even your machine
