ok. Maybe that has something to do with external drives. ??? But, when I crossed the 2TB threshold, it hung up. 2tb runs fine, if I cross it, OHHH BABY LOL

well I would take the failing drive out and put the ide Optiarc 7200 NEC in it's place. Your Litey is the ide version of my 20A1S I have both of these in sata drives-optiarc and the litey. Write withe opti mostly but don't hesitate to use the Litey.

I also just made a test on-the-fly copy of Hellboy II from a NeroRecode disc with Nero Express @x16 on a ricohjpn 03 +R. Scanned out at a 94. Not bad on the Optiarc 7200S, read from the Litey 20A1S.

I'll bet you've never noticed that PIErrors spike at beginning, watching the movie??

hmmmm... I gather you like your opti? Ive read some bad reviews. I work at UPS. Most packages are handled with care, but we do get alot of 18 -22 Yr olds that are fresh into the work force and dont quite get it yet. I guess I dont like buying delicate technologies online. ESPECIALLY lcd tvs. I bought my lite-on at officemax. LOVE IT. I suppose I could give the opti a shot. Thanks for your imput. :D And I suppose NEWEGG does package well.

since buying dvd burners from newegg.com I have not had a problem with the shipping. They are packed well and they will take them back in a second if there is a problem. Never had one. The NEC optiarcs are good. it's the Litey Optiarcs that are getting the bad reviews. I have both varieties and like the Optiarc 7200S. I've bought two BenQ dw 1655s from them and all was great. a total of 5 drives in 3 years for 2 pcs. It was depressing leaving my Bqs in the old pc. LOL

In a way i'm sure glad i have no pc's/enclosures/anywhere free as all this talk of AD-7200S's is making me contemplate buying a few, they're £14.50 here, maybe cheaper if i shop around, that's silly money!

ok, I dont know how I came to that 2TB limitation. It looks like no SINGLE drive can exceed that without 64bit and/or a certain file system, E.G. G.P.T. Correct me if im wrong. I LOVE CRITICISM. I do.. REALLY!

I like all this "technical" talk but you guys should really try that link in my sig to continue this line of conversation. ;) Of course I'm sure that RedRob doesn't care but you silly buggers haven't posted a scan in quite some posts. :p

creaky.. just buy one.. they're great and for the $money$ can't be beat. :) Of course the most I've paid for one is about $25 which would be about the same as you quoted for the £pound£.

omegaman.. I've purchased quite a few ODD's from the EGG and never had an issue that I can remember. I've had to return a couple of items but it wasn't ODD's, one was a KVM switch that I returned 2 of and the 2nd one they kindly gave me credit to get something else. :D NOW SMS on the other hand did't do very well with ODD's in my experience. lol. The drives were just fine but the packing was sub-par to say the least. :p

Again I can recommend these ODD's with NO issues or concerns. ;)

    Sony/NEC/Optiarc AD-7200S/A
    Lite-On iHAS120/220
    Lite-On 20A1S/P
Lite-On 20A3P/S (gotta have the "test" f/w imho tho)
    Pioneer 116/216
LG (w/ Renasis chipsets... I can explain more if need be)

    .....gm

add: lemme look and see what is available for cross-flash on your Sony's. I'm not sure of the models you have and they might take a cross-flash nicely. :D

I dont usually scan at 8x but it looks like a VERY reasonable scan. Infact I would call that good. :D

born2ride I would see that scan as good as well BUT does it copy from the disc. And if so I'm sure it plays fine in the stand alone player. ;)

My other question would be about the media itself. Is there an imperfection in the die or was there some dust on the disc? Actually there could be any number of things that could cause that "block" in the scan. A speed up when burning, imperfection (as already mentioned), dust, burn strat (but if you burned with the 20A1S I'm sure the f/w is good.... I have 2 or 3), flaw in the original data on the HDD. I'm sure there are more but as I see it if it plays fine on the stand alone and lasts for more than a year it's good! :)

Some people may find this interesting. This is a scan of an Industry burned dvd (Dvd-Rom). Ive scanned them before and was impressed, this time... ughhhh!! This recording dye is also the gold tone. Some of you have probably seen them. Ive noted that gold tone dyes dont always read very good. Meaning they rip slowly, especially when scratched. I suppose it is possible that the firmware and/or the drive is not optimized for picking up errors on these type of discs. They sure dont read well.

Robert i fixed it by burning the file from the HDD instead of burning "On The Fly"

well now. I guess one of my 830's is still in the game. Well... as long as I burn at 4X anyway. I suppose through out its life, thats what its been for the most part.

    good segway:
JAM. my LH-18A1P tray door will not open when i push the button it wont kick out. you can hear it trying to open up but it is JAmmed in there. every now and then it will open. any ideas on a fix for it?(replacement may be in order,7200A maybe,, real funny comeing from a jobless man huh.)

hell all those scans in my eyes are great. even the one born2ride has with the little grouping its nothing to worry about could be something as simple as a finger print on the disc. there is no other spikes over 2 so i wouldnt worry about it. as GM said can ya rerip from that disc and how does it play....

dang now i got Zeppelin stuck in my head gotta get out the boxset ad jam
