fergie the settings utility combines a few things and one of those is smartburn which controls the speed of the drive to produce a quality burn and over speed the media as well. Of course the f/w will control some of this but the utility does aide the burner more for the burn.

Here is the Discspeed that allows Jitter testing as well. It's a C0deKing goodie. :D

d/l for DiscSpeed that reads Jitter with iHAS drives.

    @ ferguj1,

As I understand it, the speed fluctuations in the create disc is the Online Hyper Tuning kicking in and doing a quick disc test before continuing the burn.

    @ O-man,

How many devices do you have connected to the USB header that you are running your burner off of? Remember the 60 MB/s speed is total on the header.

However, I picked up the iHAP322, the same drive as yours without the lightscribe, and agree that it doesn't treat media well, at least initially. It appears to be a 'slow learner' of media. I am also running it off the usb. Remember to clear the OPC when you upgrade and downgrade the firmware!

    ok, BOT!

    Here's some scans for y'all.

    The set-up:

    Lite-On iHAP322, UL15 f/w in a Lite-on external USB enclosure. Plugged into a USB 2.0 PCI card, USB 2.0 extender with 4ports. Only active device plugged in & active. Memorex branded 16x MBI DVD-R. Burned via CD/DVD Speed 4.7.7.16 (C0deking modded) @ 8x setting.

Iso image on 7200x Seagate 250gig sata hdd, used only for dvd files. Connected via a Promise SATA card to ECS motherboard.

I know Memorex is 2nd or 3rd tier(probably 3rd tier as MBI has a prof. grade), but someone gave them to me and I'm playing! :D

    OK, here we go:

    Create disc:

    Here's the disc info:

Here's what the Disc Quality screen showed after I burned the disc but hadn't started the scan:

    Here's the scan:

Not all that bad for a first burn with this media.

Here are the stats, the jitter really surprised me!

Decided I'd better do a TRT:

Looks like I shouldn't burn this media in this enclosure faster than 6x(since 7x isn't a rated speed)!

    And last, the scan disc:

Also decided to do a TRT comparison of my iHAP322 in the enclosure and my Optiarc 7200S (connnected to same motherboard but via a Silicon Image SiI 3114 SoftRaid 5 Controller for ODD compatability).

Media used: TY03 Premium Watershield disc (same disc used):

    Lite-on iHAP322 TRT:

    Optiarc 7200S TRT:

Doesn't look like I want to burn this media @ 8x in the enclosure either. Must be inherent in either the USB transfer of the USB to IDE interface in this enclosure.

I have the iHAP422. 4 usb devices, and an external hub. All usb devices are fine but this one. I even ran it master of the ide port last night. NO AVAIL. Its a possibility however that its simply a F/W issue. It wont see another blank for A LONG TIME though. Looks like its picky about which one of my 3 adapters will work also. Only 1 out of 3 of my usb-->ide adapters work on this drive. But they work fine on my Sony DRU830,840s (samsung). Something people might find interesting is that the 422(mine anyway) is Philips/Lite-on. Ive never had a working philips product. MY 2 cents. Im just thankfull that after all my horsing around that my opti and LH liteon are still kickin.

Good advice as usual hobbit. ;)

Just so you guys/gals know I've burned some MBIPG101 R05 discs (Imation) for give-a-ways and such. Well I just got word from the parents about a few of them having issues playing. I didn't scan all of them as that would be silly. I only scan every once in a while or when it's time too. lol. Anyway these discs aren't as good as I first thought. They were getting 90-95 scores on the scans and well within tolerances with the PIE and PIF spikes so something is funky here. I don't have access to the DVD player so it could be that but they play CMC MAG stuff like a champ. ;) Anyway just some info for you people. ;)

imation... lol. When I first began... they were my 2nd batch. BIG mistake. lotta stutters. Will not buy them again. Though there were worse. E.g philips. you definetely get what you pay for. The philips I bought were like 8$ for a 50pack 3yrs ago. 3yrs ago, that was a phenomenal deal! As i said though, you get what you pay for.
Howcome we dont get smileys on AD? Cdfreaks, ive been posting the past few days... they're all about them.
I wonder if CK is working on the iHAP. Havnt gotten a reply from him. I know alot of us dont JACK in to the net though, :D Yes, thinking about having my SKULL modded. LOL

ROFL... I got a good deal on them as well... hehehee. :p BUT sometimes you do get what you pay for and sometimes you get a little more.. well I didn't get any more there. lol. :p I think they were the first Imation DVD's that I've purchased and it's NOT gonna happen again... Right now the most impressive "cheap" media that I've found is Office Depot ativa CMC MAG AM3 (DVD-r 16x) stuff. :D

As far as smileys, it's something that drD doesn't want to mess with and there is some sort of post on it but I'm to lazy to try and find it. :D

Yeh getting "jacked" to the net might be fun but I don't need my thoughts getting out for open discussion... heehehe. :p

    omegaman7,
About the same time period I was buying all the Sony 50 Cake Box 8x +r's I could get my hands on from CompUSA for $7.99. They were Taiyo Yuden T02s. Shows that unless you identify the Media, you don't know what you are buying. LOL!! When I discovered they were Yudens, I went back and bought every 50 pack they had left in stock. It was about $65 for the 400 DVDs I bought! Very good quality Discs! Sometimes you can buy better than the purchase price would indicate.

    Best Regards,
    Russ

Yes indeedy. Lol, I probably would have done the same thing. I really wish the iHAP would produce burns like this. I feel like taking a sledge to it. This awesome litey has burned well over 200,+ several litescribes(dont do that anymore).
GM, i'll post an imation SOON.

here is an 8X imation I burned quite a while ago. I imagine most the discs out of this BOOK will look similar. When they get slid into the book they get scuffed near the outer edge. I tried a 16X imation/optodisc but photoshop rendered the file inaccessible! and it was near HOF too! Oh well...

I think that O-man7 just proved what I've thought for some time. lol. CMC MAG is better than most of the "other" media out there. :D That particular Imation product was a CMC MAG E01, not bad stuff if you can find an ODD that will burn it. ;) Well MBI stuff is out for me unless someone can prove it differently. ;)

the burner was an, "NEC ND-3550A" was pretty good til I gave it cancer! Would burn most discs qicker than recommended speeds while maintaining good quality. Rest in peace NEC. :( I wonder how it would have faired with these, Datawrites that I have. Also cmc. CMC MAG AE1 if im not mistaken. though the opti and litey do a good job with um.
