    Hi All,
Im new to afterdawn, I found it after googling the words "xbox" and "power button".

Basically I have searched all your forums and cannot seen to find any people with the same problem EXCEPT: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/321388
Where CAPO01 seems to have the same issue, but didnt ever seem to get an answer..

So here goes, my xbox was chipped in bowlers about 2 years ago, its worked perfect since then, ive played the odd game but mainly used it as my media centre streaming lost/films/mp3's from my server upstairs. Until recently where i found the power button wouldnt turn it on, its as though it is upset with me for buying sky+ as it was only a few months since gettin that that the xbox started to fail.

I can however turn it on with the eject button, but that isnt perfect as it times out after 30 mins to save power, as it wasnt actually turned on (or so it thinks).
Some times if I leave the power cord out the back, then plug it in, it just turns on, but then if I press the eject button it half opens the door, has some sort of fit, and then powers itself off as tho its in a mood with me :-S
All this time the the GREEN RING/LIGHT around the eject button NEVER goes green, BUT goes RED if I pull the AV (cable to TV) out the back when its powered on - So I know the power is to the bulbs.

I am currently debating on replacing the xbox with a media pc running vista unltimate with media centre and binning the sky+ as I will be able to record to PC and not spend £50 a month for the priviledge - But it would still be nice to find out what the hell is up with the xbox so I can ebay it with the 50+ games on hard drive to help pay for the new media PC..

Any help would be much appreciated, and sorry for the long first thread :D

    Pete

Go into MSdashboard and you might have set auto shutdown to like 30min.

I am having the same problem, but my xbox is not modded in any way. I haven't played my xbox in about a month; today I tried to turn it and found the power button doesn't work. The console seems to only turn on when I plug it in, and only turn off when I unplug the machine.

I did some more searching on-line and found this website that may help with this not so uncommon malfunction. Looks like a few different things can cause this problem. Hopefully, some of you find this information useful.

I tried to reply to this thread but apparently there is some forum rule about reviving old topics.

Anyway, I managed to fix my xbox and it's now working as it should with none of the previous problems. Power button works and it no longer shuts itself off or turns itself on. The problem was discussed on another forum and it turned out to be some kind of slight corrosion on the traces located on the underside of the motherboard.

To fix, I first had to disassemble the xbox. For those of you who are new to this, I followed these instructions: http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/crack_open_that_xbox.htm

After opening the case then removing the DVD and HD drives I was able to remove the motherboard. On the underside I found some little dark specks along the traces and some white residue in a couple other spots on the board.

Using a somewhat sharp-flathead screwdriver I gently scraped along the traces to remove the dark specks. The discoloration will remain, but just do the best you can without being too aggressive. Then I got a q-tip with rubbing alcohol and wiped along the traces as well as cleaning the white residue from the board.

Follow this thread to see what I'm talking about; white residue isn't pictured but specks are clearly visible. As you can see, they are quite small.

I reconnected everything and plugged in the xbox, testing the power button and making sure it didn't power itself on when plugged in. Worked fine, so I reassembled the box and played a quick game. Good as new.

Hope this helps anyone who finds this topic via a google search.
