Im having these problems and am wanting to update my FIRMWARE but Im not sure how to. I went to a link someone had posted called "the firmware page" but I couldnt find the type of drive I had in the list. I have a toshiba laptop qosimo e15-av101 and I looked in my computer to find the name of the drive which I hope is the right name. it is a: MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-830S
I was receiving power calibration errors with my drive and figured it had died as well. I picked up a new LG 4166B, which in a whole other story, stopped working giving me write errors after about 5 burns. Since my old drive is out of warranty I figured I would open it up and see what I could figure out. Gave the rails and the lens a good rub down and it appears to be working again, at least it is finally burning one dvd as we speak, I will still ahve to let it play to see if it is a successful burn. So definitely if you plan on just trashing the drive and it is out of warranty open it up and give the lens either a shot of air or a gentle wiping with something lint free.
Yep, it was definitely the "blowing it with air". I was having all kinds of problems with "Power Calibration Errors" in Nero, and I made about 20-30 coasters... before I found this post. I read through it, and decided to give the "blowing it with air" a shot. Sure enough, that fixed it. The first DVD I tried after that, burned perfectly. I've already burned 12 DVD's since, and haven't had a single problem. It wasn't the media (I had been using the same media all along without a problem). It wasn't the firmware (why would the firmware even be a factor if I've been using the same media without a problem and I'm only half-way done with my spool of 100 DVD's, so the media hasn't changed, the firmware hasn't changed, it was just a bunch of dust build-up). I opened the DVD drive door, and just used some canned air to blow out all the dust. Then I closed the door, and tried to burn another DVD and it worked like a charm. Thanks for the "blowing air" tip. Who would have thought a little dust would be causing so many problems. Thanks man! Don't sweat the haters, and thanks for the easy and simple fix!
I've tried the air blowing and I still can't produce a DVD burn. Heck my drive doesn't even recognize my DVD burner. I'm using Sony DVD+R and have never had a problem with them. I'm also using Nero 7.5.02 but this was happening even with Nero 6.6 when I had it.
@Dynamo5 - have you started a thread in the Nero forum, with your logfile. If not you should do that ..
Hi guys. Long time reader, first time poster. Bit of a long post here but I don't want to leave anything out that may be relevent. I have had my Sony DW-G120A for about a month and had no problems, now I am getting a power calibration error almost* every time I try to burn a Verbatim +R DL disc. After the error the drive has a hard time reading the disc, clicking like crazy, requiring reinserting and then taking several minutes to recognise the blank. *out of 4 discs used I have two coasters(totaly unreadable), after retrying discs that had power calibration errors, where the burn has started but failed soon after. I have peviously burnt 5 of these discs with no problems soon after getting the drive. I have blown out the drive with compressed air, used different power connectors and IDE channels, updated Nero, turned of IMAPI CD-Burning service and reflashed the firmware to no avail. I think the drive may be defective. I have two logs, one for a burn that resulted in a power calibration error, and the other if for a failed burn on disc that previously had a power calibration error. ********************FIRST LOG******************** Windows XP 5.1 IA32 WinAspi: - ahead WinASPI: File 'C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=2.0.1.74, size=164112 bytes, created 11/2/2004 1:54:32 PM NT-SPTI used Nero Version: 7.5.1.1 Internal Version: 7, 5, 1, 1 Recorder: <SONY DVD RW DW-G120A> Version: MYS4 - HA 1 TA 0 - 7.5.1.1 Adapter driver: <IDE> HA 1 Drive buffer : 2048kB Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ? I'm having a similar problem. Yet it's quite different. I have a "_NEC DVD+RW ND-2100AD" i don't know much about it except it came with my computer. I'm trying to burn a data disc. I'm using Maxell discs. I tried using an older one which supports speeds of 1X 2.4X and 4X. I've also tried to use newer discs which also support 8x. I've burned DVDs with the older discs before with Nero, Drag and drop, and iTunes. Now, however, Nero gives me a power calibration error 3-4% into the burning process. When I insert the blank disc Windows doesn't recognize it. It changes the drive name from "DVD/CD-RW Drive" to just "CD-Drive". I bought a Maxell DVD Lens Cleaner but that didn't help. HERES the twist: I burned a data DVD using iTunes. It doens't have the files I want, as it burned music to it, but it burned it nonetheless. Any Ideas?
Hi All, Having calibration problems too, but other weird problems. I havne't changed anything but my new CPU and additional RAM to my pc, and have 2 dvd drives: Plextor PX -760A and a LiteOn SOHW-1633S. Both worked fine until a few days ago when i went to burn and got these power calibration errors. My LiteOn works fine for cds (burning and reading) but won't burn or READ a DVD. My Plextor will read a DVD or cd but wont' burn either. I"ve changed power cords in teh back to both, sprayed air all inside both units, and updated firmware for both. I'm running out of options, and can't really them both being defective at the same time. Anyone have any suggestions? Here is a copy of the last burn i tried to do with my Plextor. Will cheap quality media destroy your burner? I have used my burner to burn 50 times only with Nero 7 and now my burner always freezes when you insert an empty DVD disc. Having had it installed, the first time experience is that when you insert the disc into the burner, it will load for quite a while, more than 30 secs before you can burn your disc Right now my burner is not working at all. Please help and tell me what happens. It happens to my second burner as well. The brand of DVD I use is Office Depot.
office depot brand? well there is one of the problems use Tayo Yuden , Verbatim, maxell, ritek or phillips stay away from crap like generic stores staples and office depot and stay away from memorex they are really crapy media!
My question is whether my burner is still usable? Or it is already dead and has to be replaced with a new one?
try to play a movie that you did not burn then try to play a burned movie if they play the drive is ok maybe needs updating firware or need to use better media
Is there any relation between burning DVD+Rs and the power calibration error??? I too have a DW G120A. I'm using Nero 7.5 and Firmware is MYS6.
dont know but cheap +r's seems to have shut one of my drives down as far as dvd's only cds now on that drive!
Thanks Madmurdoc. I was having the same problem, followed your steps and now my burning is all Kool and the Gang. Many thanks
Still having these problems on a Liteon Drive, only for DL discs, my dell laptop burned on them ok, with same software NERO 7 and i did try the disable IMAPI from madmurdoc said.. still no go.. Dunno if anyone is reading this forum but I still need some help!! oh and the liteon drive is in a brand new machine, fx-60/2gb RAM/gts8800/winxp/nero 7. thanks Waffleman!

Read here if you have tried everything else! I tried everything on this forum, and I came across this, I have a OCZ 700 watt power supply, and what I was gettign power calibration erorrs in nero was because it wasn't on it's own rail, meaning nothing on that power string was being shared, it was only going to the dvd burner and that corrected it for me, it wasn't a media issue or a windows service you had to shut down, and I tried all those, it was a simple power rail the dual layer drive needs to be on it's own power string/rail and not sharing with anything else, even with a brand new 700w PS. thanks Waffleman.
